Child’s Meadow Resort

Very friendly owners that provided us a great dinner and breakfast while we stayed at their RV park. Pretty place near Lassen Volcanic National Park.

Great place to stay on your way to Lassen or Caribou Wilderness. It is rustic and retro but the owners are amazingly friendly and there is a store and restaurant for all your needs. We used the firepit which was great, couldn’t have been happier!

This location is convenient but the place is pretty much run down. In the night we got bitten by some insects in bed (bed bugs ?) and I couldn’t sleep. After couple of days I had to take kids to urgent care as itching couldn’t go away with on the counter medication. if I want too convenient location, I will just sleep in car outside the NP.

We stopped so our driver could get a cup of coffee. He liked it and it was only $ 1.50.
I talked to Dottie, the owner, to get the scoop about the gov’t shutdown at Lassen. She was helpful and it was nice to get an insider view on the park.
We ended up hiking Brokeoff Mountain and it was beautiful!!!
It helped that our driver was happy from his coffee fix. Haha
I was impressed that she had an industrial kitchen so I asked her to give me the hours. Here they are:

One of the worst places you could stay. Well, this is only closest option to lassen. however mind you the following
1. No WIFI
2. No Heater — some furnace which wont heat well
3. No Breakfast
This is an old cabin. But probably your only choice, its expensive too.
But we had no choice due to location closer to lassen in mill creek. mineral may have some options.
But you can just pass a night here for sake of travel from redding, ca.

If you have a choice between staying at Child’s Meadow or Mill Creek Resort (about ten minutes down the road), stay at Mill Creek. Mill Creek is also rustic but the rooms are cabins and the amenities and staff are super friendly, whereas Child’s Meadow only offers a row of dark, dank rooms that are horribly dated with cinder block walls. They are small, stuffy and no cheaper than Mill Creek. What this resort (which is really more of just a roadside hotel eerily similar to the Bates Motel) has going for it is the wonderful view. It sits on the edge of a valley that opens up onto the foot of Lassen National Park, with snow-​peaked vistas in the background.

The most effective summary if you know what I mean: It’s like your Uncle Joe’s cabin that he built back in the 1950s and barely maintains.
One star for the perfect location, about 5 miles from the entrance to Lassen Volcanic National Park. One star for having a 2 bedroom cabin with a kitchen, so convenient for breakfast and making lunches. Half a star for the friendly folks at the front office. I did appreciate them. Half a star for having ample hot water.
No stars for cleanliness. It wasn’t horrible, but I’m pretty sure that bedspreads haven’t been washed since the Nixon administration. The linens were dropped off in a basket, make your own bed. (And don’t come late, because that service goes away at 8 p.m.)
No stars for maintenance. It looks like one of those double wide trailers, tilted slightly which is disconcerting. The furniture is vintage thrift store, and the paint job is even older.
No stars for insulation. It got pretty darn cold at night. And as I said, the blankets were obviously crunchy and hadn’t been washed in a long time. We slept in sleeping bags the second night, and that worked much better. So I recommend you bring your own sleeping bags if you stay here.
No stars for the fire pit, sadly. It was taken over by a large family with a lot of dogs (which were in the road a lot, made driving in rather nerve wracking.) So we didn’t get to experience that.
Minus half a star for the broken smoke detector. We were worried about fire and carbon monoxide too.
Minus half a star for the fact that it was priced like a 3 star hotel, but was actually closer to a 1 ½ star motel in quality.

We just spent two nights at Child’s Meadow Resort and had a great time. The staff was wonderful and could not have been friendlier or more helpful. One of the owners went out of his way to accommodate us and make sure that we had a pleasant stay. He even lent us some cooking gear that we needed.
Overall, a great place to spend a few days!

Filthy dump in a beautiful location. We stayed in 2005, then stopped and checked the same cabin a year later to see if they had changed their ways. It still had the same shower mat with the thick layer of mold covering the bottom. I don’t mean a little mold. The white mat was black on the bottom. Place was very dusty/​dirty. If they had put a new mat in and paid a maid $ 20 to clean the place they could have made $ 700 off of us for the week. Can’t understand the owners’ lack of business sense. The location is beautiful so it’s really too bad they won’t clean the place. We drive by frequently and it looks to be under the same ownership. If it does change we’ll check it out again, but I definately would not plan to stay there without looking at the room or cabin first.

Dirty room (in the motel), lamp with the power chord ripped out, loud neighbors, no dinner served as promised, should have guessed from the shitty website that this place is no good! STAY away!

The owner doesn’t allow tent campers to arrive or set up after dark. Keep this in mind if you’re driving up after work from more than a few hours away. The part that was frustrating for me is that I wasn’t told this when I made my reservation by phone. To the owner’s credit she did cancel my reservation without charging me. However, given the confusing communication and my thwarted attempt to actually spend the night here, I can’t justify giving more than two stars.
