Barry J Marcus Watchmaker

I feel guilty writing this review because Barry is an older gentleman and obviously devoted to his craft but after my experience I feel compelled to. I brought my five year old Movado to Barry in March. It took 6 weeks for it to be repaired at a cost of $ 150. A month after picking up my watch it broke again and I returned to Barry to have it fixed. Barry didnt remember me or the watch. He was confused about what he did to the watch and why he put an incorrectly sized gasget into the watch. When I told him how much I paid for the repair he was shocked and said he doesnt repair Movado watches. I had to remind him that he most certaintly did not tell me that when he repaired my watch and accepted my payment. In the end, it took another 3 weeks for the
watch to be repaired. I did not pay for the second repair because Barry guarentees all his work. I think that Barry is getting a little forgetful in his advanced age and should probably think about hanging it up.

Found this gentleman on Unilocal,and found all the previous reviews to be true — he is an independent watchmaker business which is a rare find these days. He re-​hauled a premium watch for me at a reasonable price, and then also replaced 2 watch batteries for me (did not have the batteries on the spot, and so I left the watches there to pick up at the same time as the other watch). As for location, the building is set at an awkward corner on a busy street, but there is a parking lot behind the building. Barry (his first name) is in a small, unassuming office on the 3^rd floor. Definitely be prepared that this is a «mom and pop» type shop — no e-​mail or computer system, sometimes the telephone will have a busy signal — no voicemail, etc. He uses a paper claim check system for keeping track of items (though he writes down your name on a tag that he ties to the watches and when you arrive for pick up, he may have to rummage around for a few minutes in some drawers to find your items). He doesn’t sell any product (ex. doesn’t have watch bands etc), all he does is fix watches (and not clocks, I did ask). Very nice elder gentleman — I would definitely recommend him for watch repair.

This guy knows his stuff about watches. He’s going to give you one on one service with your watches. You can trust him and he is very fair. He fixed my watch twice and did a great job. He’s also got a great personality.

Brought two watches in for repair. Mr. Marcus is a traditional craftsman watchmaker. 66 years of experience. When I learned that my watch required a battery which is 1) no longer available and 2) $ 140 when it was, he explained a solution using a different battery which provided less life but at a $ 10 cost.
I would drive 20 miles out of my way for him to do my work, actually, I did.

I saw an ad for this business and went to check him out. Mr. Marcus runs a small shop in an office building on Main Street. The building itself is set back from the street so it’s easy to miss.
I was looking for someone to repair my Citizen Ecodrive watch — the stem had jammed and I couldn’t change the time or date. I’ve had this watch for 6+ years so I wanted to speak with the person fixing it rather than go to a jewelry store that would send it out to someone else.
He’s a very sweet gentleman who ended up fixing my watch for free. It was a simple fix and he was really nice about it. I offered to pay him for his time but he refused. I ended up chatting with him about his work and how long he’d been a watchmaker.
He’s a 4^th generation watchmaker who’s been working with watches since he was 10 years old (he’s now in his 70s.) He works on all kinds of watches — expensive, inexpensive, antiques, brand new, etc. I have another watch that needs a major repair and I am definitely bringing it to him.
So if you need a watch repaired, please go see him. He’s super nice and really cares about his customers. In today’s world of impersonal retailers and zero customer service, Mr. Marcus is a refreshing reminder of how businesses should be run.
