LOVELOVELOVEHIRES. It’s my favorite burger in the world. Incredible service and super caring staff. Good variety on menu and everything is cooked to perfection. Really good fries– the cheese fries are my absolute fav. Also known for their rootbeer, rootbeer floats, and rootbeer freezes which are all must-haves. Definitely go to Hires if you want a 5-star burger and fries.

Here’s my secret confession: I’ve never actually had a burger from Hires! Crazy I know but the first time I went there I saw chili cheese fries on the menu and I can’t seem to break away and try anything else. They have yummy fresh cut double fried french fries. I’ve had them as cheese fries and their almost as good as the chili cheese fries. The chili is made in house and has bits of ground beef and beans in a nice rich tomato sauce. My other guilty pleasure when I come here are the shake. They’re so delicious. Thick and creamy and just big enough that you hate yourself when you’re done drinking it. The salted caramel(which doesn’t really taste salted, they should just call it caramel) is my favorite but the chocolate and strawberry are classic for a reason. If I’m not getting the shake then I’m definitely getting the cherry diet coke. They add the syrup themselves and while it does add calories to the diet coke it’s definitely worth it. I like that Hire’s has a car hop(drive up). But they are notoriously slow. I’ve both called in an order and driven up and placed an order and both ways I’ve had to wait. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing though as my food is always piping hot and freshly made. I’ve only gone in once and that was not a good experience: empty restaurant and lousy service. But everyone has a bad day so I’m not changing my review based on that one experience.

This place is strange. The food is good, but it’s mainly fast food quality and you have to tip a waiter, so we’re talking $ 10 for a regular fast food meal. My ticket actually ran $ 10.74 for a burger, fries & $ 2 tip(no drink.) it was pretty packed too so apparently a lot of people dig it. Weird.

I’ve been going to Hires for 30+ years now, and it’s consistently good food. The Big H, the lemon chicken sandwich, the fries and the onion rings are stellar. We love Hires and it’s a Salt Lake institution. Better than the famous C Burger place in town, in my opinion. Each time I go there is at least 1 large table with extended family there of many generations.

Great fries, fry sauce, onion rings. Burgers are good, not great. People are very nice. Price is too high for what you get. Frequently too cold in dining area. Frequently screaming babies & kids running around. Points program is good.

Clean, good food, and friendly service. Not the best burger I’ve ever had, but it was still very good. The fries are made from fresh taters(and were way better than 5 Guys). The server, Linda, was great as well. Hire’s excels at the old fashioned diner vibe.

I can appreciate this type of place. It hits the spot when you need something heavy, meaty and cheesy. The service was great and the burgers hot and fresh. I will be back.

I really like this place, and their burgers are great! Their fries are pretty awesome too. I usually go to the downtown location but both are good locations. If you want a good burger and fries that will hit the spot, you gotta check this place out. I love burgers it’s defiantly my cheat meal after a clean eating all week. So even if you care about eating clean the food in this place won’t make you feel crappy after you eat it. Service is great too!

These guys do a great job of keeping it classic… Food is good and the servers are friendly… The service is a little slow, but it’s worth it… We like to come here because we know what we are getting… They are always consistent…

It’s a two in one restaurant. It’s very unusual and makes it even harder to order. But you will not go wrong. It’s a local gem.

Tasty burger and fries. Only thing keeping me from giving them 5 stars is whether the meat is grass fed. It doesn’t state on their web site or menu.

Instead of going inside we opted for the carhop. They were pretty fast when they came to the car and took our order. Five minutes later our food was ready. The burger I ordered was really good. It had fresh avocado in it, the provolone cheese was melted just right. The onion rings were rather boring and over cooked. My wife ordered the teriyaki burger which had a piece of pineapple in it and a chicken breast. It was pretty good. She enjoyed her banana Oreo shake. I didn’t try it. All in all the place was pretty good. Better than I would have expected.

Average dining w experience, classic spot in the Salt Lake City area, but if small diner spots with great food or something unique is what you seek, look elsewhere. Been here 10+times in 15 yrs since moving to SLC and each time I tell myself never again. Went 2 weeks ago, it seems to be the locals that grew up here and have nostalgia blinding them that keeps this place in business. Its not horrible or bad, its just average and not worth the $$, can pay the same amount at a chain and get better or equal food… and thats against all food rules for me. Cheers.

There’s probably a nostalgic factor for me in rating Hires since I have fond memories of coming here as a kid with my dad. The burgers are great, the fries are tasty and the service is always good. This particular location has a pizza place attached to it(I think a lot or all of the Hires locations do now) and I tried some of the meatballs and the meat sauce was actually very good, which was surprising because my expectations weren’t that high. I wish they had a Hires in my area!

This is a nice, friendly establishment. They make a great burger, and the iced root beer was refreshing.

We obviously had a much different experience than other reviewers experienced here. We came in during the lunch hour and it was pretty busy(maybe just 2 or 3 tables empty) and we were immediately seated and the waitress came by within 1 – 2 minutes with water. We ordered and hardly had time to look around and chat a little before we had giant burgers sitting in front of us. I ordered the root beer float and it was possible the best float I’ve had in years(even better than A&W’s). We ordered cheese fries as an appetizer and I probably wouldn’t recommend them. Basically just greasy fries with cheddar cheese melted on top. But the extra fry sauce was very good and I was tempted to buy a bottle on the way out. But the burgers were pretty good. I tried the Hire’s Big H Double and it was too much food… I should have ordered the Single. We also ordered a hamburger with fresh avocado. They were very generous in their avocado portions unlike many restaurants. Overall I’m not sure it was the best burger I’ve ever had but I wouldn’t be opposed to returning here. The atmosphere is a small-town diner that has been somewhat recently renovated. The 3 employees we interacted with were smiling and courteous and fast.

In theory this place is terrific. Burgers, root beer, fries, and a little touch of nostalgia. That’s in theory. And there are elements — small pieces — that can be gleaned from those characteristics. But in the end, it doesn’t quite all come together. Firstly, it’s not that they’re trying too hard. Perhaps it’s that they’re not trying enough. One of the greatest compliments that I can make to Hires is that it is completely inoffensive. It’s safe. Bring a group of people here and it’s doubtful that anyone will turn their nose up. There’s probably something for everyone, and there is most definitely something to be said for that. But if you’re not moving forward, you’re moving backwards. That’s figuratively speaking – I would actually love if they moved forward or backward, timewise. Either embrace the nostalgia, or start taking some risks and move forward. The décor is so simple, but not fresh. It’s a vanilla ice cream cone with nothing sprinkled on the top. Menu-wise, I have nothing bad to say. Especially about the burger. It doesn’t shine as a beacon of beef patty in the valley, but it’s totally acceptable. Probably just north of average. The rest of the menu highlights a little something for everyone with particular attention to the fast food before it was fast food movement. Stop in for lunch or dinner and there’s a sure bet you’ll find something on the menu for eveyone in your party. But without that added spark, you probably won’t find anything that inspires you to jones for the joint. We love you, Hires Big H. Utah really loves you. Mix things up a little and help us be in love with you. Let’s rekindle the flame!

Great burgers! A little overpriced and you may leave feeling a bit hungry. But the taste and quality are excellent. 5 years ago, this place was top of the heap, king of the hill. Now there are LOTS of better burgers in Salt Lake Valley.
