Excellent food, service and environment. A fun place that is somewhat noisy, but a great place to enjoy great sushi.

Tried various sushi, sashimi, and nigiri. Reasonable price. Our waitress, Jade, was very knowledgeable. The environment was nice. Food tasted great!

Visited Maru 2x in one week during a house hunting trip in Midland — once for lunch during the week and another lunch during the weekend. Both were great experiences. Enjoyed the lunch specials during the week(2 rolls + soup/salad) — they were a great deal — high in quality and low in price. Tried a variety of dishes on the weekend — not as cheap as the weekday lunch specials but still solid. Not the most«high end» sushi you’ve ever had, but pretty darn good for a small town sushi joint. Excellent service and pleasant, modern atmosphere.

Came in for a good anniversary lunch and was quite impressed. They had a good menu of items. I appreciated the variety available and the unique plates. Between the two of us we got got two rolls, a plate to share, and two desserts. We had excellent service and a delicious filling meal. My fiancé and I will be back again next time around dinner to get some sake with our meal.

Probably been here a dozen times already and it’s been fantastic every time. I really enjoy going on Tuesdays because of the drink prices but any other day is good as well.

Great sushi! Really busy on a Friday night, make reservations. We did so through Unilocal and they didn’t have our reservation when we got there but we’re so kind to get us right in. Our server Eden was fabulous and offered to give suggestions and was really knowledgeable. We ordered the maru’velous, papa crema and the sexy bacon. All really good, papa crema being our favorite!

Still good but overpriced. The sushi rolls are huge: they’re all rice and have relatively little fish by comparison. If you have a small mouth, the rolls may be too big for you.
Came here on a Tuesday night with a coworker. There are not many sushi places to choose from in midland so we decided to come here based on other Unilocal reviews. The interior is modern with a regular sushi bar to sit at as well as high tops and regular seating. It has only been in business for 7 month, therefore mostly everything is brand new. Our waitress was Christina who took fantastic care of us the entire night. My coworker rarely eats sushi and Christina was great and explaining all different dishes. She clearly knew the menu as well as all ingredients. Maru tries to put a spin on your traditional sushi rolls as you can see from their menu. The sushi was great as the fish looked and tasted fresh. I had the oceans eleven roll which was great. Overall this older as great. The staff was knowledgeable and everything came out right away without waiting. They do have a 20% discount on Unilocal for the first visit so make sure to take advantage of that.

First of all, take advantage of checking in before you pay because you’ll receive 20% your bill if it’s your first Unilocal check in! After an initially lack-luster first experience that left me feeling a bit lukewarm about Maru, I was contacted by the Manager, Thomas to rectify the situation. This is my edited review to reflect my return: The details of my experience: the décor is very modern, and has a big city feel. It’s loud, but not so much so that your voices are entirely drowned out. I recommend getting a reservation because it seems to be very full on both a Thursday and Friday evening. Our service was very good. Our waitress was new and let us know that, but was very attentive and did a great job for a new comer. All of the staff was friendly, and willing to offer any help or answer our questions. Our waitress asked what order we would like our plates brought out to us, which I really appreciated because we did have a preference to have our sushi before our entrée. The menu has some traditional sushi and other Japanese offerings, but most of the menu is a twist on what you’d normally expect from a sushi bar. It’s a higher price point than other sushi restaurants around, but you can see they use very expensive and top-notch ingredients so don’t get too upset! The specialty rolls are a very eclectic selection that deviates from traditional sushi in a way that is unique, but not mediocre or insulting to longstanding Japanese tradition. I enjoyed the inari nigiri, it’s so soft with a hint of orange teriyaki flavor. We also tried the papa crema roll and Snow White roll. The papa crema reminded me of a gravadlax bagel, so obviously it was yummy. The Snow White was a complex combination of deep sea fish, lobster salad, and other ingredients that gave it a char-like, spicy profile. We both had hibachi dinners: rib-eye and vegetable. My boyfriend enjoyed his, especially the vegetables, but would have liked a little more seasoning on his steak and a slightly hotter temperature.(He’s a chef himself so he’s got pretty high standards!) My tofu and veggies were delicious, and left me very full! The food isn’t served very quickly, but the presentation is lovely, and you know they don’t rush the played to ensure the highest quality results. Side note: they serve Mad Cap coffee! I’m very impressed! I’m very impressed with Maru my second time around. Thomas ensured we had a great meal, and even asked for suggestions and comments following our dinner. Thanks again, we had a lovely time and will be back!

We have now eaten here three times. The sushi is astounding. This us the one place I’ll go for rolls. Normally I want pure salmon sashimi. But here I’ve learned to order the specialty rolls, blind. They are all superb. Prices are great. Our service at the bar has been great. They are gloriously generous, giving delicious free bites while you wait. And the roll platters are huge! My one beef is that too many employees are on their personal cell phones. That is corrosive to the atmosphere. I don’t know why any employer puts up with that. And a bit too much information overheard in loud employee conversations. Otherwise fantastic place.

I apologize for ordering ribeye steak at a Sushi & Grill. As a strong supporter of eating the cuisine advertised by the restaurant’s name, I felt I was betraying my own policy. BUT it was fantastic! What was remarkable was the size; who would guess Texas sized steaks at a Sushi place in Midland? Anyway to be fair, I also ordered the Lollipop roll, a beautiful assortment of sushi wrapped in cucumber. It’s not you, Lollipop Roll; It’s me. I just cannot love your slimy exterior combined with slimy interior. I gotta have some texture variance.

What is wrong with me? Why did I fail to review this place?! I was here a couple weeks ago with my girlfriend and we ordered quite a bit. I ordered the Mt. Veggie Udon soup, and we split the Madagascar and Sexy Bacon rolls. The food was all pretty unsurprisingly delicious. I really enjoyed the spice mix they give you the option of using in your soup. The Madagascar roll delivered on heat, and the Sexy Bacon roll had a lot of bacon on it, but I could still taste the fish. I wouldn’t say the soup blew my mind, but the sushi was very good, even if a bit pricey for what you get. I was pleasantly surprised that someone(I think it was the manager) offered us a free dessert. We chose the green tea crème brûlée, and it was great. I don’t usually care much for dessert(crème brûlée in particular), but this was the best crème brûlée I’ve had, and I’d definitely have it again. The sushi rolls here range from more traditional to more hipster(like the Sexy Bacon roll), so anybody who likes sushi can find something they’d like here. I give Maru more of a 4.5, but I’m not sure there’s any debating it’s some excellent sushi. I wouldn’t say it’s better than Sushi ‘N’ in Saginaw, but it’s a pretty close call.

Some of the best sushi I’ve ever eaten. I’ve been here twice now and enjoyed it thoroughly each time. Staff isn’t super fast even when they aren’t busy but it was always okay with the right expectations. I’ve had the salmon tartar. Amazing. I’ve shared it with others who were skeptical and after trying it they loved it. It’s worth trying! I don’t like mushrooms but I also tried a bite of the mushroom app and loved it! One time I had the soy joy roll– lived it. The darker sauce it comes with reminded me almost of a subtle BBQ flavor. I even more enjoyed the blue mango. Every bite left me wanting more.
