A must place to visit! Around a 10 minute drive from Newport. Free 30 minute parking and a short walk to the cliff. Absolutely breath taking views. Great place to sit and take it all in.

Great hidden secret in Newport. Nice view looking down towards second beach. It a very easy and short hike with a great payoff. It’s a good place to take pictures and there are usually not to many people there. Of all the times I’ve been there only twice was another person around. I like to run there and then climb/hike down to second beach. It’s also fun to watch the waves and surfers from a birds view.

Fantastic view of Middletown! Very limited parking and there is also a parking time limit. If you manage to get to this small spot when there aren’t other people here it’s extremely peaceful and arguably romantic. It’s easy for this spot to feel like there are too many people here. There’s a little bridge that goes over the water that brings adventurers a little further down. This is an ideal quick rest stop. There are no bike racks or restrooms.

Gorgeous view! Good for a 10 minute stop. Small parking lot with a 30 minute limit. This is a fun and free thing to do.

A great quick stop if you are exploring the area. We decided to stop by and check it out before heading over to the Wildlife Refuge across the way. There is a lot right nearby the chasm that holds about 8 cars and is limited to 30 minutes, though I am sure you can get away with longer when its off season. You could also easily walk or bike from Second Beach. If you explore the whole area, you probably won’t spend more than 20 — 30 minutes here anyways. Its a fun little spot, and the Chasm was surprisngly scary to stand nearby and look down! There is a nicely constructed bridge that allows you to stand directly over the chasm and look down. It was fun going to the Refuge from the other side of the beach and being able to see where the Chasm is.

Would be a fantastic place for a picnic lunch! Just make it quick because it’s 30 minute parking — though the lot was completely empty for the duration of our visit. Fun to watch the surfers below. It is not exactly where marked on the Unilocal map. Take Purgatory to Walcott — head toward the ocean. This dead ends into Tuckerman, take a left and keep an eye out for the lot on the left. Beautiful view.

Just wow. We just Unilocaled stuff to do in the area since we’re in Newport for the week. We saw this and figured we’d give it a try, and I’m so happy we did! It’s a super short«hike» to the chasm. There are so many little nooks to just climb around and take in the amazingly fresh air. We sat for a few and watched the bunch of surfers try to catch some waves down below. We were in absolute awe with Purgatory Chasm. Can’t wait to tell everyone about it when we get home! Tip: Make sure you wear sneakers when coming here, there are way too many great places to climb around!

I went to Purgatory Chasm in Sutton, MA and this Purgatory Chasm in Middletown on the same day, just to say that I did. Rockin’ good time. Also, it’s a great spot to see the Perseids if you can walk or bike here. I’m not sure how the law likes people wandering here at night.

Pretty cool spot to stop when in the Second Beach/Sachuest Beach area. Beautiful views of the ocean and beach from atop the cliffs. It’s a great place to have a picnic or sit and take in the ocean views with someone special The chasm itself is a cool little cove, with the waves crashing in and out. It’s not a spot you will most likely spend all day, but it’s definitely worth a half hour or so to snap some pictures.
