To set the stage: You walk down the stairs into a basement-like setting. The first thing you see is an eagle statue, while you wait for a host or hostess to seat you. Once you enter the restaurant, you’re in a forest — tree décor at it’s finest. It’s all unusual, but that’s what keeps life fun, right? Mikado is pretty decent for sushi. They have a good variety of delicious specialty rolls. I believe that the one that I ordered was the Sweetheart role — some sort of roll that ends up looking like a heart… perfect for date night! Overall, if you are in the area, not a bad place to try out!

As an Asian, I think this restaurant offers good American style sushi rolls. Service was good. We ordered Sweet heart roll, Incredible roll & monkey roll.

If I could rate 4.5 Stars then I would. Based on my experience, the interior is rather cute, it’s different but yet still expected as a Japanese restaurant. The food and the Sushi is really good! Fresh, cooked well, and didn’t take too long to come out. Also the Sushi looked amazing as well as it tasted amazing. But what brings this down to a 4.5 for me was how we had reservations and we weren’t promptly seated immediately and still waited 15 minutes. Lucky that we weren’t in a hurry or anything but just saying, I like this restaurant. I hope they use my 5 star review as a motivation to make sure things like that don’t happen, I understand they were super busy but come on, we had reservations, 5 minutes okay but 15 to 20 minutes, no

Beautiful place, amazing, quick service, DELISH food. I’ve never been disappointed and I’ve been going there for years. My #1 sushi destination.

I was impressed by Mikado. The atmosphere is awesome and has a cool vibe. When you walk in you immediately go downstairs into the basement but it’s not sketchy like it sounds, it’s actually the opposite. I loved the fact that you get served hot towels for your hands before your meal. Our food was all great, the menu has unique dishes not found at other Japanese restaurants and the plating is elaborate and adds to the experience. They have a huge variety of specialty rolls also. The only negative thing is that it is definitely on the more expensive side compared to other Japanese restaurants I’ve been to in surrounding areas. For that reason it won’t be my regular spot but it will be for special occasions.

Went here 1÷8÷16(Friday night. When we walked downstairs it was as though we were walking into a scene from The Hobbit… Someone redecorated and it was awful. We sat at the sushi bar as we usually do and ordered shrimp shumai and crab rangoon. The shrimp shumai was pretty good, but the crab Rangoon was overlooked to the point of being almost burned. As we hadn’t eaten all day, and hunger is the best sauce, I made the best of it(my husband really shouldn’t have ordered a Chinese appetizer at a sushi place anyway). Then our sushi came out(ugh). The sushi rice was ice cold. The fish was ice cold, the shrimp tempura in the monkey roll was cold and the eel was cold. When we spoke to the owner all he said was that the tempura was cooked in his kitchen NOT why it was cold. NOT why the rice was cold — he just took two of the awful items off of our bill. I have been going here for years and have maybe gotten one other awful meal, and just a couple of mediocre ones. I wish I just sent back the whole thing, and left the restaurant, and went to MOMO in Milford. I have been eating sushi for years. I have even had it in Japan. The sushi we had here tonight broke all the rules. The rice was in huge chunks NOTBITESIZEFINGERFOOD. The rice was ice cold, NOT at room temperature. The eel/unagi was cold, NOT freshly broiled. The fish was just oversized rectangles not in that perfect, slightly concave shape that hugs the rice perfectly. I am sad to say(because I go here quite a bit —(I’m the Dutchess for pete’s sake), that we will not be coming back, and I can no longer recommend Mikado as a good place to go for sushi. Enough said.

This place is kind of hidden, there’s a sign on one side of the building but the entrance is in the back and you go downstairs. Atmosphere really cool, a little dark but it suits it. The menu is huge and the scorpion bowls are on fire(literally) and so good. My group had the hot app combo with an array of fried seafood items, mostly shrimp. All were good, service was on point, never had to ask for waters to be filled or for anything else actually, she almost came around too much but better that than never. We ordered 4 special rolls and split them all so we could each try some. I totally loved every one of them. We all said the same thing leaving this place, why do we not come here more often, it is one of the better sushi places in the area

I bought Groupon for Mikado and was very pleased with all of the food that my friend and I shared. While the location is very small in Middletown the food was delicious. We had the yummy roll, crispy rock shrimp, chicken fried rice and noodles and it was all very good. We were both happy with our selections and both plan on visiting soon.

I always enjoy the sushi here. My favorite special roll is the Kamikaze Roll, which has spicy salmon, lobster and avocado. Always fresh and delicious. Tonight we also had small plates of edamame, gyoza(pork dumpling), and harumaki(Japanese spring roll) — all very good

So this has got to be one of the best Sushi places around. The variety of rolls is amazing. Great spot to go with a date, friendly staff, and fun to go in groups too. I like it.

The variety of rolls here is fantastic. I’ve probably tried about a third of the special rolls menu at this point and I’ve never been disappointed. They always seem to be spot on in terms of balancing the various flavors within a roll; I find that soy sauce is usually not necessary. When a roll comes with a sauce on it they never over do it, it plays into the other flavors well. I find this particularly impressive compared to other sushi restaurants because drowning out the flavor of a roll with a strong sauce seems to be a common mistake. Some roll recommendations: Sexy Roll is sweet and fresh, a great summertime roll in my opinion. Fire House Roll with its sweet and savoriness is a nice one for all seasons. Once the weather starts to get chilly my favorite pick so far would be the Incredible Roll, kind of a mix of the other two mentioned plus a nice leben of spice to warm you right up. I can’t speak too much regarding other menu items, but for dessert I enjoyed eating the chocolate cake in combination with the fried banana. Alone each of them would be good, but together they become great. I would like to come again and try the ginger ice cream, that’s one flavor I don’t typically see on the menu at other Japanese restaurants. For drinks the hot sake is always a safe bet. I also like their unfiltered sake, almost a little creamy. I tried the plum saketini at my last visit and that was a little disappointing, didn’t really taste like plum or sake, just tasted like pineapple juice. I figure I’m not coming here for the drinks tho, so still giving them 5 stars on what counts.

This restaurant is great! Huge portions. Big glass of wine… not skimpy. Waiters friendly and very knowledgeable. I had the Sexy Roll and a glass of Merlot. Had a custard desert for my birthday.

The restaurant is situated down below street level. I like the stone walls and waterfall decoration. Food is great, but I have a lot of observations about the way they serve. Its a little disjointed and disengenuine. When we came in we and asked for a table for 2. They sat us at a small bar in the center of the floor while we waited for out table to be ready. While we sat at this mini bar there were several wait-staff came and went behind the bar but they never greeted or offered us a drink. Which is odd since we were hoping to be served. They didn’t even make eye contact with us, probably because they didn’t want to have to make anything for us. They were making cocktails for their seated tables. We were sat about 5 mins after that. I got a fancy cooked roll and my fiancé got Chicken Katsu Don which is a rice and breaded chicken dish with an egg. I was happy with the food and would like come back and try more. The service being weird isn’t enough to keep me away from decent sushi.

Sometimes you wake up feeling like a teenager on the first day of summer vacation. Bright eyed, blissfully naïve, and ready to face the day. Other times you wake up feeling like someone snuck into your house and beat you with a floppy sack of doorknobs and then stole your lunch money while you slept. Even other times you wake up feeling like that teenager but then quickly realize you’re actually that guy who was beaten in his sleep, and that you won’t be eating lunch today. On days like the latter, I enjoy eating a shameful amount of sushi. There is a ritual to eating sushi. It is food that has been crafted by hand. Whether it’s a roll, or a carefully sliced sashimi, or a ball of sticky rice that’s been molded in the chef’s palm and adorned with wasabi and a slice of raw fish, when the dish arrives at your table, there is a moment of fascination. Before you eat it, you just sort of take it all in. It is food prepared in a way that Americans, or the rest of the world for that matter, do not often see. You can appreciate the skill and craftsmanship that went into making each piece. Only after a moment of silent reverence do you eat it. With chopsitcks. Don’t even get me started on chopsticks. I’m pretty sure sushi is eaten by hand in Japan. But, being American, if it originated in Asia, it gets eaten with chopsticks. Hell, I eat miso soup with chopsticks. I’ve heard people say that good sushi shouldn’t require the addition of wasabi or soy sauce. Those people are welcome to eat sushi however they please. I on the other hand, pile that shit on. I like to put so much wasabi on my rolls that my eyes tear up and my sinuses feel like they’re going to escape through the top of my skull. It’s a thrilling sensation. Is this offensive to the chef? Will the waitresses stare and make jokes behind my back? Do I care? Mikado is a bit more upscale than your typical sushi house. Some may venture so far as to call it fine dining. Located in Melilli plaza in downtown Middletown there is ample parking in the lot adjacent to the restaurant’s building. Parking here used to be free until recently, but the rate for peak time is modest at $ 1/hour. The restaurant is located in a basement, and when you walk downstairs into the dining area, you feel like you’re in a basement. The lighting is on the dim side which sets an intimate, somewhat romantic atmosphere. There is bamboo. There is stone tile. There is a quilt made of patches dedicated to each of the 50 united states. I’m serious. The wait staff is friendly and almost overtly attentive. Their selection of hand rolls and signature sushi dishes is overwhelmingly large, but of a very high quality. For those who do not dig on raw fish, their selection of teriyaki and tempura dishes is also extensive. Some photos I’ve included with this review show what I consider to be a shameful amount of sushi. It was delicious and I regret nothing.

Mikado has excellent sushi, friendly servers, and a hauntingly fun underground dining environment. With a Groupon in hand, the total was very reasonable, especially considering we went for the«Love Boat» special. What a combination. A ton of sushi, a ton of sashimi, a rainbow roll, and a spicy tuna roll, with miso soup to start. Don’t really need to order anything else! My wife and I were pleasantly full by the end of the evening. But man, did it take forever to get that sushi. This is the only reason for that –1 star. I know, it’s a lot of work putting together 40 pieces of sushi/sashimi and two rolls. But we found ourselves looking around, starving, wondering when the heck it was going to come out. Even after the courtesy«It’ll be out in just a few minutes,» it probably took a good 10 – 15 minutes from there. It’s an excellent choice, and we love dining out in downtown Middletown. So one flub like that isn’t going to keep us away, especially if they keep the Groupons and other deals a’comin. They’re a Middletown dining staple, and certainly deserve their place of honor.

A promo code for 20% off a local deal convinced me to purchase a Groupon and try this place! Judging by the packed restaurant on a Saturday night, I guessed other people had the same idea great idea and bought the Groupon as well. Nonetheless, my hubby and I immediately got seated at 8 p.m. We ordered a love boat. Though it was delicious and fresh, it took FOREVER! It even took forever for the miso soup it came with. As a sorry, we were served a little petri dish of some ginger chicken salad. The ambience was cool as it was basement level, but I will stick to my East Tokyo place in Berlin.

Everyone raves about this place for sushi and I’m not sure why. Large variety, yes, but any other standard sushi place has similar variety. The sushi presentation? Beautiful, I’ll give them that. But I go for sushi because I’m hungry and craving sushi, not to stare at my food. The novelty of the plate presentation fades away, and it’s not worth the extra bucks you’re paying for it. I prefer Moonlight down the street.

Went last night for first time(had a groupon that I needed to use). My boyfriend and I were both pleased with our food but feel its slightly on the pricey side. The atmosphere we really liked– the art and lighting was nice and who cares that you are in a basement. Our servers were very nice and one lady was so cute in particular. My bf ordered a margarita(he always wants odd drinks) and she had no clue what we were asking for but had us write it down for her. She came back with a fabulous margarita! Now the food: we got the gyoza appetizer(delicious!). I got a small house salad and really loved the ginger dressing! It was different than the typical orange one– i really enjoyed it. Wish they would throw a few more vegetables into the salad though– it was lettuce with one tomato. For entrees I got the Spicy Girl Roll which was so pretty and really good. Price was 13.50. My Boyfriend got hibachi steak(now they don’t have a hibachi table so this was just off the kitchen menu). He enjoyed it but said it was too expensive at $ 20. You can go to a hibachi restaurant get same dish for 22 with the show and get more food. I tried it and wouldnt exactly say it or the veggies tasted like hibachi(it was still good but just had a more terryaki flavor i think) but my bf thought it was spot on. Overall we really enjoyed it. They have tons of sushi options and will probably come back with a girlfriend who also likes sushi so we can get a few different rolls.
