We went there on January 2nd at around 1pm. There were maybe 6 tables that were occupied, and no one acknowledged us when we arrived, so after a few minutes, we sat down at a table on our own. Right at that moment, we could see the waitress did her best to ignore us. We asked for the menus, which never came, so I got up and took them. Then we waited more, until I asked the waitress(who still hadn’t acknowledged us) for two coffees and two cremes brulees. After a while more, the coffees arrived without a smile, the desserts never made it. The waitress served all the other tables with more coffee from her pot, but ignored us again. The desserts still never arrived. So after 10 more minutes, we left without asking for the bill, we left $ 6 for the two coffees. Wow. Just wow. This was the very worst service I have ever seen in my 70 years on this planet(and I’m French!). The owner should seriously reconsider his choice of employees, they will shoot him down before he can say«crème brûlée».

My boyfriend and I decided to give this place a try since Red Fox was closed. The place’s décor was quaint but a little outdated for my taste. The waitress greeted is upon arrival & sat us in a corner table that was very wobbly. I ordered a Cappucino & the Bavette Steak with Bernaise Sauce & my boyfriend ordered the Chicken Alfredo Pasta. Our food came out within 5 minutes, which to me is a little sketch that it came out that quick. To me it says the food has been pre-made which I am not a fan of in a restaurant. The alfredo seemed more like a soup from the excessive oil & tasted not good per my boyfriend. I took one bite of my steak & did not like it. I asked our waitress if I can get a Caesar Salad instead because the steak was not to liking. Within seconds, she brings out the Caesar Salad which barely had any dressing. We were disappointed at this point & were ready to head back to the Salamander. At the time of our bill, we just handed her the card without looking at the amount which was out mistake. We then saw that the amount was $ 50 and asked for an itemized receipt. This receipt only gave prices & not exact description of what each amount was. I guess their décor wasn’t the only thing that needed a major upgrade. I was even more disappointed at the fact that I was still charged for a steak that I did not fully enjoy & usually expect the place to not charge for the dish. At least, that is what all great restaurants do. Nonetheless, we will not be coming back here.

Unfortunately we were excited to check this place out for a Saturday afternoon lunch. The service was terribly slow, we had a group of 6 and they didn’t try to sit us together we had to sit at 2 separate tables and our food was cold when it came out. Sad to say the place wasn’t even busy, so not sure why the slow service or inability to seat us together. It’s hard to find a good place to eat in Middleburg which is a real shame.

10÷4÷15− We take a trip out to VA every fall for some chill orchard time. This year, we decided to relive a trip to Middleburg we hadn’t experienced in several years but sorely missed. We had been out to Stribling orchard, a winery and a cidery earlier in the day but hadn’t had a proper meal. We landed at Julien’s based mostly on limited affordable food options at 5:30 pm in the city. Julien’s was on the main stretch and open. We entered was immediately welcomed and seated in the entirely empty restaurant. We started with an AMAZINGLY well balanced french onion soup. Heavy melted and browned cheese set atop and slightly salty brown oniony broth. Sooo sooo amazing good, satisfying, comforting especially since the day was drizzly. This soup was a fantastic introduction to the rest of our food experience. On to the entrée’s, my companion had a sous vide’d salmon with hollandaise… absolutely perfectly cooked to just the right amount of flakiness without an ounce of dryness. But my dish was the show stopper. Chicken stuffed with dates and goat cheese. The flavors just melted together, savory chicken, sweet dates and creamy satisfying goat cheese. OMG! It didn’t stop there though! Dessert… a huge crème brûlée would not be ignored. I ate every bite. Now the dinner was more than we intended to spend on a simple orchard day outing but the value was unmistakable. This entirely unassuming«café» rocked our culinary palettes and apparently a lot of other people’s as well b/c it was packed to the gills by the time we were halfway through our meals. See you next year, Julian’s.

Enjoyed an early lunch on a quiet weekday. The carrot and leek quiche was exactly what I was looking for on a ‘not quite a brunch’ day. Nice simple small salad to start. My husband enjoyed the corn chowder that wasn’t too creamy — he was happy about that. Loved the café feel and the people watching from the window. Wonderful service in a relaxed atmosphere. Nice to sit back and enjoy.

Wonderful meal. Good service. Very reasonable price for a fine dining experience! The pork tenderloin picatta was excellent. As was the tallapia.

This is a nice little french style restaurant. I have never been here for dinner, but often go for lunch. The menu is exactly what I expect from a french country, casual restaurant. Food is fantastic and the people are friendly. I’ve never been disappointed.

Wow! My first time to this restaurant and I read negative reviews that made me question my choice. I was meeting a new co worker for a business meeting and wanted a good experience. I had one! Not everything was«perfect» because we are all human. The best thing was a bistro atmosphere, polite employees and reasonably priced delicious food! I had their goat cheese pizza from the special list and my co worker had the fettuccine. Both were amazing, and about ten dollars, which is amazing in Middleburg! Great desserts! Chocolate mousse and Crème caramel! My cappuccino didn’t come out quit right so they fixed it quickly.(So what.) I give it 5 stars based on price, food quality, ambiance and hospitality!

I usually try to find something nice to say, but I have nothing nice to say. My Caesar salad was worse than your average bagged salad. Even the parmesan was terrible. My dining companion’s pasta with sauce smelled, and apparently tasted, like Chef Boyardee. The service was okay, but nothing to write home about. If your choice is between eating here and buying something at the Safeway down the street and eating it in your car… do the latter.

Food tastes good, but they don’t care at all about your allergies. I can’t do Soy and the waiters response was«there’s soy in everything.» I should have just left but I didn’t and had a reaction after being told I’d be fine.

Odd atmosphere, seems like it wants to really be Middleburg, but it’s not as preppy as you might expect. Quick to get a table. But that’s where it ends. I should’ve taken a pic of my food, you would have to see it to believe how small our portions were. I had a $ 15 Caesar salad + cup of bean soup for lunch. There were about 6 pieces of lettuce, that was the salad. The portions were tiny for a place that lets people come in wearing flip-flops wearing athletic clothes to get pizza. Weird, really. Small portions are ok for high end restaurants, but not this place. It’s a corner café with rickety chairs, not a white tablecloth fine dining place. You might be misled by the servers wearing bowties but this really is over-charging and pretending to be something it is not. My bf’s salad nicoise was supposed to come with a red wine vinaigrette but instead it looked like some watered down mayonnaise all over it. His portion was awfully small, also. Another $ 15. We actually went to safeway afterwards to get more food because we left still hungry. Truly disappointing. Never going back. The server was nice.

I wouldn’t know if this place is any good or not because we walked out. We went there for lunch today and the lady who sat us took us to the table right by the kitchen door and slapped down two menus. There were four other tables wide open that she could have sat us at. I don’t know about you, but if I were a server and I had to sit someone right by the kitchen door, I’d ask, «Do you mind sitting by the kitchen?» or I’d say something like, «I apologize but this is our only open table.» However, this woman didn’t say a damn thing to us. She didn’t have to because being seated by the kitchen is like being given a big, giant middle finger!

Tough. That says it. The steak bavette was the chewiest and toughest steak I’ve ever had. Ever. The restaurant was cold, as in, maybe 60 degrees. It was busy but only because everything else in Middleburg was closed. Service was good not great but attentive enough. Don’t bother unless you get the chicken.

Food Up and Down We like Julien’s Café for the unbelievable French Onion soup and ambiance but unfortunately the rest of the food can vary in quality and taste. Had the baked ½ chicken and it was very dry. Ordered french fires and they were cold. Who serves cold fries? I did have a great leek and potato soup. I would like to give this little place 5 stars but can’t do it in all good conscience until they up their game.

This is a small little café in Middleburg. Your customer service will be second to none, and their food is to die for. So rich and tasty. The management actually helped me surprise my girlfriend with flowers and a teddy bear. This restaurant is a must stop.

This is a cute little café in downtown Middleburg right on the main drag. Probably the best place to eat down here, in my opinion. They have a pretty nice wine list and interesting sandwich and salad options. I ordered the smoked salmon BLT(twist on a classic) and it was excellent. They also have delicious and buttery croissants, which I cannot resist so I had a little of my friends’. Service was professional and friendly and the inside felt very quaint and cozy. Great place to stop for lunch on your Middleburg winery tour.

Not a bad spot but far from good. Diner like atmosphere. Low key and unpretentious feel which is great. Feels like your grandparents house. However, feels middleburg overpriced, a pretty unexciting menu(eg pasta and tomato sauce), and low quality food. Drinks don’t leave much to be desired. I would avoid in the future. Other places are much better in middleburg.

Julien’s hits the mark in every way. The unpretentious atmosphere and service make you feel genuinely welcome. The food is always rich in flavor and appealing in presentation. Julien’s is a perfect place for date night or dinner with a few friends.

The Mister and I stopped here for lunch over the weekend. It was a little bit less than okay. The place felt — and smelled — sort of… damp. The Mister had French onion soup and a caesar salad. The soup was a solid effort. It wasn’t the best we’ve ever had, but it was tasty. The salad had what was clearly a homemade dressing. That’s why it was weird that the lettuce was very obviously from a bag and the croutons were those tiny little cubes you get at a, like, Pizza Hut salad bar. It was a strange mix of high/low touches. I made an error in ordering the hamburger. I got excited by the idea of local beef, but I was disappointed. There were two major issues. The first is that the burger(served with some unenthusiastic, undercooked shoe string fries) was just ground beef. There was no seasoning to it at all. The cheese looked like a Kraft singles slice, but I can’t be sure. There was a ton of mayo on the bun, which I found disgusting, but I acknowledge that’s a personal preference. The bacon, I’ll give you, was good and crispy. However, the second issue was how the burger was cooked and what happened next. I ordered the burger medium. When I cut it in half, it was … very, very red. When the Mister sent it back for me(I suck at that), they took the entire plate without any apology. The waiter just said he’d take it back. When it was brought back, it was clear they’d thrown it back on the grill, which was weird, because I’d put ketchup and veggies on it. The burger was cooked, but the bun was soggy and the fries were cold. I sort of gave up and ate what I could. Service was just okay. I was annoyed that he didn’t seem to think there was a problem serving such a raw hamburger. There are better places to eat in Middleburg. I wish we’d suck with our usual and gone to Market Salamander.

Visited Middleburg for the scenery and a nice walk around town with my hubby, and decided to try Julien’s for lunch. We were seated right away at a little table for two by the window. The atmosphere is cozy cute, very small dining room and a full antique-type bar in the back. I guess you could say it looks very«French.» Ordered a ham and swiss sandwich. Service was very slow, but the sandwich was tasty once it arrived. Our server seemed new at serving, a bit awkward but pleasant. When in Middleburg, it’s a nice place to stop for lunch, but I wouldn’t make a special trip out here. I’ll probably come back sometime and try something else from the menu.
