After a long flight from PDX to MIA I’ve got to get something to eat and the in house food at the Best Western doesn’t look that different from a menu back home in Oregon. It’s after 10 pm EST but my appetite is big — my last meal was 430 am PST. I follow the 5 stars on Unilocal and in a short walk I’m hanging out with the gregarious host Claudio who recommends his best street cart styled ‘cracklin’ chicken, green plantains, rice and beans — it’s his family’s recipes from 1972. I was the only one there and he made me feel like I was at the home of long lost amigo. The flavors were full and savory and reminded me of the Yucatan made all the more fulfilling with a couple of Modelo’s and the video streaming music of El Torito. I’d love to come back on a weekend for the live music as the place is clearly loved by locals and travelers alike.

From the atmosphere to the people to the food, this place is a perfect spot for a relaxed night of Dominican hospitality. Extremely welcoming, even to a gringo like myself, the staff and clientelle were warm and made me feel like I was invited into a family home. I was walking down the street and heard Mirengue pouring out of a place full of people dancing and families eating. They beconned me through the window to come around back(rear entrance, btw) and I figured why not have a beer. Next thing you know, I’ve been recruited into the band and sent to get my bass! They alternated djs and a small live band. I had cod & potatoes in a red sauce(not sure what to call it) over rice, absolutely delish! Overall an extremely memorable experience I would recommend to anyone!

Got stuck at the airport and decided to stay the night in Miami. Starving, we walked around the corner from our hotel. This place let us in at 8pm on a Sunday night even though they were having what looked like a family gathering for Mother’s Day. They made us feel very welcome and the food was amazing! I highly recommend the fried whole fish and the plantains.
