Double M Feed Garden & Pet Supply

This place is hit and miss. As soon as I walked in the door, I was asked how I could be helped, I almost felt bombarded. However, I had an issue returning an item and I even had the receipt. The gentlemen at the counter said he wasn’t sure how I paid so the issue was how he would refund the money (cash or charge). I am not sure how this was my issue since I had my receipt in hand. It would be helpful for them to upgrade their register so they will know how the customer paid preventing this issue. I also dislike how they «sell» cats and dogs, too many animals needing to be adopted at shelters and other places. They have a good selection of certain items and some staff members are helpful. For example, I called recently and asked if they had an item over the telephone and she was very helpful looking for the item I needed. Overall, I will be back if I need something I can’t find elsewhere.

Very nice people. Went in for our dog couple of weeks ago and we will never use petco again. Nice and friendly staff. Had everything we needed and were very kind.

I am new to the area and was looking for a good plant store. My intention was to find a healthy tree that grew fruit, and hopefully to obtain sage advice on how to care for this new addition. I was greeted immediately by a very nice woman who showed me to the satsuma plants out front. She spent at least 15 mins providing me with detailed instruction. Additionally, she never pushed product on me. I just planted our new little tree out back and couldn’t be more satisfied.

Just stopped in to check out a pet store I hadn’t been to yet. Found a dead chick in their chick cage and a zebra finch with no feathers left on his head it was so plucked by its cage mates. Some stores should stick to supplies. :(

Let me just say this. Don’t call these people for ANY information whatsoever. I called them once and asked what time they closed. They told me 7:00 pm. My sister called a second time and they told her they were closed. It was 5:00 pm. For a third time we called for clarification because they extremely confused us with wrong information. We called about ten times and no one answered the phone. When they did answer, the lady was extremely rude and huffed that they were closed. The people who work there really don’t know what they’re doing and get they’re facts straight.

This place has good prices on chicken feed and supplies, and I have bought baby chicks from them that come shipped from Ideal hatchery in Texas. However, I have one complaint. First of all, very young chicks REQUIRE a heat lamp, and I have gone to Double M many times and seen chicks without any heat lamp over them at all. The chicks are obviously cold because they will be huddled together trying to stay warm like penguins during an Antarctic blizzard. I am sure that I am not the only person buying chicken supplies from Double M that sees this and finds it upsetting. This place really needs to show a little more care and put heat lamps above ALL of their in-​stock baby birds that are huddled up and cold. I would gladly pay more for chicks if it meant that they would provided them with a heat lamp or some source of vital warmth.

I just have to say what a pleasant experience I just had at the Double M Feed and Seed in Metairie. I went there to return an item I purchased over 30 days ago, completely unaware of the 30 day return policy. Cheryl went out of her way to make it possible for me to get a full refund for my purchase as this item was not used, and I live on the Northshore. Without breaking any rules, she made it happen and I am ever so grateful!

Let’s just start by saying I’ve been on Unilocal for over 4 years now, really just to read the reviews every now & then, but mostly to get an address or phone number. This is the very FIRST time I have ever felt the need to post a review, since I really do think all this « Unilocaling» is kind of foolish. I work in sales myself, & the lady that was «helping» me (Cheryl/​Sheryl) really needs to look into another line of work. Not only was she not helpful AT ALL, rude, literally huffed, & got aggravated when was asked the price on a product because she didn’t know & would have had to go look it up. Well, so sorry Mrs Cheryl/​Sheryl, that I bothered you & you would have had to stop leaning on the bird cage & actually help a customer out. Take your business elsewhere. Flat out rude & lazy.

About two weeks ago, I came in on a whim looking for a Venus Fly Trap plant. The guy was very nice, took down my name and number and said that they would call when they got some in.
I got a call yesterday afternoon from a gentleman as I had just gotten home and stated that they had received several Venus Fly Traps. I stated that I would be in today at the latest. I made it in today, and there was a woman behind the counter. She pointed out the one unhealthy looking Pitcher Plant they had. She just shrugged her shoulders at my story and said «oh well» She did not make any suggestions as to where to go or offer to call when they got more in.
I will not be going back to this place. They do have puppies, one of which was whining very loudly and no one was paying attention to come give it attention, which added to the depressing mood in the store.

This is where I get my chicken feed. 8 bucks for a 25 lb bag of Layena.
They also stock my dog’s food (Natural Balance Limited Ingredient Diet Sweet Potato and Fish Formula). If I can’t get out here, I usually just buy it on Amazon. But that takes a couple days, so if I know I’m running low, I come here.
They have chicks now. It took all the self control I could muster today not to take a few home with me. The only reason I didn’t is because I’m afraid my hens will peck the babies to death, so I’d have to hand raise them, and that’s really a pain in the ass because they shit like every 30 seconds and they need to be fed about 25 times a day.
Anyway, yeah. Everybody who works here is super sweet. They even carry the heavy dog food and chicken feed bags out to your car for you.
The one problem I have with this place is that they sell puppies. Not cool, Double M, not cool. It’s irresponsible to encourage the sale of companion animals when there are so many irresponsible breeders (puppy mills and backyard breeders) out there, and so many unwanted pets on the streets, in shelters, and being euthanized every day. Even if these pups are procured from a responsible breeder, having them in a store like that encourages people to view living animals as products to be bought on a whim, not living, sentient lifetime commitments.
