Very informative and entertaining. If you’re near Mentor, it’s well worth your time to check it out. I took off 1 star because of the bias the exhibits exuded(but just to be fair, I have that criticism about most U.S. Nat Historic Sites). Apparently if Garfield survived, he was such a genius all of our problems would have been solved. Anyway, I don’t mean to sound so down on the place. It really is incredibly enjoyable site about a chapter of our history that largely ignored.

Very cool tour! I love old buildings and historic sites. We did a full tour of Garfields house and for only 5 bux its a good deal! Tour lasted about an hour. Take an umbrella if its raining cuz they do the whole schpeal weather its raining or not and your butt might be in the rain for 5 – 10 minutes. They loose a star because the tour guides have ZERO personality and could lighten up a bit. Very cool to see and old house where rich people used to live. If ya wana see way older houses and actually sleep in them too. go to Europe.

This was a fantastic place to visit during one of our Ohio vacations! There was ample parking and it was easy to find. We walked into the visitors center and were able to enjoy the exhibits about Garfield’s life, which were well-done and informative. Before going on our house tour, we watched a film about the president’s life, and I have to admit(spoiler alert) that I got a little teary when he was killed. We then went on a house tour, and one room was more beautiful than the next. The tile in the dining room around the fireplace was lovely, and I loved seeing Molly’s bedroom upstairs. The best part was the library on the top floor. You don’t have to be a history or museum geek to appreciate this home. If you are in any way interested in Victorian life, this is a nice little gem. The gift shop had some great merchandise. When I asked if there was a book on Garfield’s life, the clerk advised me that the best one she’d ever read was actually a graphic novel on Rick Geary. It sounds crazy, but it was a great little book. Also, if you’ve got a National Park passport, be sure to get it stamped!

The James A. Garfield National Historic Site in Mentor, Ohio is the preservation of President Garfield’s house and land maintained by the National Park Service. President Garfield is one of seven presidents from Ohio and the second President to be assasinated. The Garfield home has been preserved with a windmill, campaign headquarters, hen house and barn. One should begin at the Visitors Center which has Rangers, pamphlets and informational material on President Garfield. There is also a small museum that describes the President’s life. The house is available by tour only for a fee of $ 7. A Ranger guides the tour and gives a lot of interesting information about the President and his family. The tour continues onto the front porch of the house. The guide explained that Garfield had the first front porch campaign where he invited thousands to come to his home to hear him speak. The rest of the house is very interesting and it’s nice to see the style of the late-Victorian home. Just a short distance from Cleveland, one should visit if nearby. It’s easy to find and only a mile off the highway. It’s worth it to hear about a very interesting, intelligent president whose Presidency was cut short yet still had a significant impact on our nation’s history.
