Taqueria Express

This place is a CLASSIC! Worth waiting in line– all of the tacos are delicious, but pastor are my favorite. They have horchata and aguas frescas too! Get it! Also the SALSA! Get extra– green and red. They are so different but I can’t decide which is better.

It was good. I would eat here again. Relatively inexpensive too. I need to try more things.

Great tacos, although small they are priced right at $.99 The sauces they give you are on the hot side so be careful. Great pork every time we stop! The veggies and peppers are a nice bonus, and tasty as well.

I tried this place a few weeks ago. I always see people standing in line. I bought several tacos (beef). They had very little meat, and no real flavor. I was very disappointed.

Not the best tacos but not the worst. I liked that they were fast with serving the food but I didn’t like the lack of seating area. The truck is pretty cool looking. Love me some tacos but these tacos didn’t fill me up. I got 6 and they still didn’t fill me up. I don’t recommend the barbecue taco because there was too much fat in it. I do recommend the al pastor taco though.

Hubby and I checked this place out on the recommendation of one of his customers. I would eat here again but it’s not my favorite place for tacos. The tacos were good and cheap ($.99!!) though small. They also offer a nice variety of things to eat. They weren’t the friendliest bunch but they weren’t rude to me either. I love that the truck listed meat in both English and Spanish though I list mine in Spanish because that’s what I’m used to calling them. They also have a sign saying you can purchase beer inside the Superman store, though I’m not sure if they get any of the profits or if they have just been asked that so many times they put up a sign.
Hubby got a crap ton of tacos and I got to try some but not all. He said not to both with the barbecue one (since he ate it before I got a chance to snag a bite) and since I typically don’t like that either I think I’ll stick with his recommendation.
They have something called mulitas which my husband says are like papusas. I didn’t get the chance to ask what the differences were and just got one al pastor to try it. Ohhh myyy nomalicious goodness. I loved it.

You can’t beat 99 cents tacos! Thanks to Daniel, I learned about this place during Memphis Taco Tour. I order a steak and chicken taco and they were good, not the best of the tour but good. The place was pretty busy but they were quick getting out the orders. Also be sure to bring cash as it is a cash only food truck.

My husband and I had been wanting to try food from a taco truck for a long time … so we decided to do it 3 weeks ago,
First, the attendant was very rude and cold to us. We asked what the «torta» had and he kept pointing, annoyed, to the menu written on the truck saying the menu was there … (instead of recommending something). So I finally decided to get the «pastor torta».
My husband got 2 Carnitas tacos and 2 chicken tacos… total was almost $ 10.00
we were surprised how light the take out bag was but anyways…
we got to the car and started eating … everything had a good flavor but is too little for too much I guess, the torta was fine but too much grease or butter on the bun.
The attendant was very rude.

tl;dr — Tasty .99 cent tacos, delicious green sauce, fast service, cash only.
I wanted to try something new for lunch today, so when I saw the Taqueria Express #5 food truck as I was cruising down Summer Ave. I knew it was meant to be. I eyeballed the menu for a few minutes before deciding my maiden voyage would be with some of their tacos. I order three carne asada tacos and a pineapple drink. Five minutes and $ 6 later I was munching on some delicious tacos.
After ordering my food I discovered they don’t take credit cards, but they went ahead and started preparing my food while I walked in to the gas station and withdrew a few bucks from the ATM.
While the meat was pretty standard stuff, the fresh ingredients and their salsa verde green sauce were very tasty. I wish I had know to order their hot sauce as well, but I’ll be sure to fix that next time I stop by. Did I mention their green sauce? It is absolutely fantastic, I covered all three of my tacos with it and it paired very nicely with all of the other ingredients.
Next time I stop by I’m going to be a bit more adventurous and try some of their other meat options for their tacos and grab a couple mulitas, which I hear are great.
My only gripe is that I asked for my tacos without tomatoes and they still had some. I’m not sure if they were part of a salsa or they just forgot to not add them, either way they were still very good.

Now that I’m working in a new job, I’m getting acquainted with my new dining options. While I will eventually get around to reviewing popular eating spots like Elwood’s Shack and Bryant’s Breakfast, I first want to talk about a taco truck on the corner of Summer and Perkins. Its location is very convenient for me because it’s only a half a block from my job so walking to it is easy. In addition to that, one of my Flying Saucer drinking buddies highly recommended the food truck because of its tacos, so it was hard for me to resist. So, I found time to check out some of the offerings from «#5» that proved to be very tasty, for the most part.
One of the first things that I got from Taqueria Express #5 was a burrito with pork («con pastor» in Spanish). Although the menu labeled it as spicy, I didn’t get any sense of that but it was good nonetheless. Given the lack of spiciness, I added some of the food truck’s salsa verde that made the burrito much better. With onions, lettuce, refried beans, rice and cheese, this turned out to be an excellent burrito that is much better than anything offered by Taco Bell. At $ 5.45, it’s a great value that I hope more people learn about.
The torta (a Mexican sandwich) I got with beef tongue didn’t quite measure up. My biggest beef (no pun intended) with it was the amount of mayo in the sandwich. There was so much of it in the torta that I wasn’t sure if it had meat in it. Speaking of that, the tongue wasn’t as seasoned as I’m accustomed to. I could be wrong about that, for it was difficult to ascertain due to the excessive mayonnaise. Still, it wasn’t terrible, especially after putting some of the food truck’s delicious salsa verde on it. If I get a torta again, I’ll make sure to get it without the mayo.
For those looking for a more formal Mexican meal as opposed to street food, Taqueria Express #5 has that covered. One of my favorites is the carne asada that comes with traditional refried beans, rice and corn tortillas. Despite the skirt steak not being tender, it didn’t matter once it was in huge tortilla wraps with the entrée’s other components that made aggressive chewing a must. In the end, it was worth it, for it was a very good meal at an affordable price ($ 7.65). Compared to a Double Whopper that I can get at a nearby Burger King, the carne asada is a superior meal that I look forward to getting often.
SIDE NOTE: I got the carne asada in spite of my original intention of getting the «#5» from the menu (given the food truck’s name, I thought about having some fun with it.) The «5» consists of mulitas (a variation of quesadillas) that are cheesy and easy to eat for those on the go. In choosing the meat for the filler, you can’t go wrong with chorizo sausage. By the way, whether you’re getting mulitas, carne asada or anything else from Taqueria Express #5 (including aguas frescas such as my favorite Mexican beverage, the horchata), you will be wise to phone in your order as opposed to initiating it at the food truck. The carne asada takes twenty minutes to prepare, time I can’t afford to waste on a thirty-​minute lunch break.
The best product offered by Taqueria Express #5 is its salsa verde. I like it because it is made with fresh jalapenos, cilantro and a wonderful mix of other ingredients. Unlike those from other Mexican restaurants, I can really taste all the elements of a jalapeño in the spicy sauce, including the seeds. The sauce goes well with just about anything, including soups, chili, cheeseburgers and salads. Its only drawback is its short «shelf life» of about a week. I didn’t find this out until recently, when a plastic cup of it exploded inside the refrigerator that I use at work. One thing’s for sure: it doesn’t have preservatives in it. Without that, the natural chemicals (whatever that is) in the sauce produces gases as it spoils. So my advice is use the salsa verde as soon as you get it for an experience that is worth the trouble.
Overall, just about anything (other than tortas) from Taqueria Express #5 is a good bet for delicious eats. It is obvious that the owners of the food truck know how to put together great Mexican food for people on the go. In my limited experience, I will go out on a limb in saying Taqueria Express #5 is one of the better places in Memphis to go for good Mexican food. Of course, given the number of Mexican restaurants in Memphis’ Berclair neighborhood (including four within walking distance of my job), any restaurant serving Mexican food has to be on the top of its game if it wants to succeed. That said, I see a lot of success in the food truck’s future.

I tried two tacos and a torta. I didn’t get sick as someone else mentioned but I didn’t love this food. Memphis has some fabulous taquerias and I just wasn’t sold here. It didn’t seem overly clean. It didn’t seem overly fresh. I’m giving it three stars because it was average Memphis tacos. Extra points for being convenient to my home, in a truck, and cheap. If I try it again I would ask about putting some hot sauce on the tacos as the beef tacos were a bit bland.

Ok, now these are the kind of tacos I’m talking about. .99 cent just like in Cali. Why pay $ 2.19 down the road for a tablespoon of meat when you can pay .99 cent for two tablespoons and be able to order morethan just a few since prices are so reasonable. You leave this truck a happy eater. The prices on everything is reasonable. There’s always a line buy that should say it all, they’re worth it. The horchata is very good too. Looking forward to trying more than just the tacos and will return.

Underwhelmed

After a year and a half of relocating to Memphis from New Mexico I have finally found a REAL TACO! Thank god! This place is awesome and is just as good as any taqueria in Mexico or along the border. I had 4 carne asada tacos which was just enough for me. Ask for the HOT salsa, its delish! They are small, served on 3″ tortillas with fresh lime, grilled serranos, and pickled carrot and radish. You can’t get any better than this. Until now it was La Guadalupana that came as close as I could get to the real deal… I do like La Guadalupana but this place is in fact THE REAL DEAL. I no longer have to settle for white washed mexican food.

Stopped by on a Sunday around 12:30pm. The owner was very nice in explaining some of the items, while we waited for our food.
We ordered the chicken tacos and a chicken Mulita. Both items were made fresh and tasted very good. We will come back, several times, I’m sure. I do think I will order with little to no onions next time, though. It will lose some of the great flavor, but save my breath.

While driving on Summer my boyfriend noticed this food truck and wanted to try it out, which I’m glad we did. We both ordered tacos which are just .99 each. I had one barbacoa, pastor, lengua, and tripa taco. All four where good, but the tripa taco was my favorite. My least favorite was the barbacoa, it was lacking in flavor. Overall, I will be coming back to try more things from the menu. Plus the canned drinks are free, I think it’s a promotional thing since they’re just starting out.
