The store is small, always busy, and has a limited selection of items. Also about half of the checkout staff is super slow. There is one lady I avoid at all cost. There will be 2 guys in line at her register, each with 3 – 4 items and you are looking at a 15 minute wait. The store, and in particular, the meat department never seem clean. Someone really could make a killing opening up a nice grocery store here in midtown.

I’ve heard the complaints this store is small, cramped, crowded and parking lot maneuvering is horrific — all true. I guess I’m one of the ones who appreciates it’s quaintness. I think society has become too accustomed to ‘mega’ everything. I like the concept of dashing in and out without having to walk a mile to get to the milk. Anyway, I can find everything I need here and be in and out in a flash most times. You experience the eclecticism of midtown in full effect here. It’s cool to run into Mayor Wharton shopping occasionally. Some of the best fried chicken in the city.

Let me start by stating I adore Schnucks. It is my staple for grocery food buying necessities. This location, however, bites the big one. The parking situation is a nightmare. No one seems to know where they are going when they enter or leave this tiny lot on Union. Given the immense amount of traffic on this road you will wait a good 5 – 10 minutes to get out of the lot. Making a left turn is impossible, no matter what time of day you are there, which is highly annoying as it makes it damn near impossible for me to get back to my pad downtown when I am leaving. Every time I’ve been here I’ve ended up driving a good 10 minutes out of my way just to exit this location and get back in the direction of downtown. As for the store itself? Well, I feel like someone with an extreme lack of organization set this place up. It is like a maze, and though I have been there more times than I can count, I never know where anything is. There also seems to be a very limited selection of grocery choices. I know it is smaller than the other Schnucks locations, but often when I go here I have 5 – 10 items I cannot find when I leave, forcing me to go to a 2nd store to pick them up. The staff here is horribly rude as well. I always walk in with a big smile on my face, make sure to say«hello» to them and it never fails, I get nothing in return. Sure, sometimes they will nod back at me, but never a smile– no chitchat. Just this morning, I was nice as pie– told the bagger«Thank you so much dear! Have a great day! Try and stay cool today» and he looked at me as though I had lobsters crawling out of my ears. I much prefer the Schnucks on Poplar and have started going here– at least those folks are organized, friendly, have a decent sized lot and a better selection of grocery items.

I really like Schnuck’s. They’re a step above the selection you’ll find at Kroger. You can find many specialty items and a very good selection of fresh artisan breads and baked goods. There’s also a good produce section, lots of fresh meat and fish, and an extensive frozen foods section. You can find quite a few Kosher items. My only complaint is that the store doesn’t carry free-range meat or very much organic produce. They do carry Method cleaning supplies, which is nice.

Schnucks is by far the best grocery store in town. That said, this might be the worst Schnucks location in Memphis because it seems that everytime I go in there, they are out of something that I need. Still, you can’t beat Schnucks for the quality of their products and the service they offer.

So, this place is kind of like how Albertsons, Furr’s Supermarkets, or Reasor’s are, depending on where you live. Schnuck’s are the kind of nice grocery stores that crop up all around Memphis in response to the fact that the nearest good Walmart is in Germantown. I really like this store. The products are all pretty good quality, and the staff is nice for the most part. The meats especially are kept in good condition. I rarely come across a completely grizzly cut of meat. I can easily find a nice cut of beef here for two people for around $ 4-$ 6. If you think that’s expensive, you haven’t seen Oklahoma inflation yet. They have cows by the thousands there, and they charge twice as much for cuts that are half the quality. Anyway, I like this store. I get most everything here, including normal household goods. My only complaint is the price of the cooking ware. If I take the time to go down to Walmart, I can get the same thing or better for several dollars less. But all in all, a good grocery store.
