I am a skater. A passionate skater. And I’m just gonna say, Tobey Skate park, while it is skatable, it is not a great skatepark. I would even say, it is not a good skatepark. It is however, all that is closeby to midtown and university area residents. If you’re looking for somewhere to skate, Tobey would not be my first choice. It’s crowded and the arangment is sloppy. There isn’t enough room to manuever, the park being too tightly put together. If you’re looking for somewhere to skate, I suggest you explore other options before you decide to try this park out. Tobey skate park is indeed a skaters paradise and the above reviews pretty much say all that you need to know about the park. There are features for all ability levels and the park has been carefully designed to allow a beginner skater transition smoothly from beginner to advance features. I have ridden many parks that often have beginner features and advanced features but lack intermediate features. The park is indeed quite small and often crowded. There is a tiny micro-halfpipe(about 18 inches high) that will be a quick favorite for your kids and it’s safely tucked away from the main skate traffic in the park. If you are looking to take your kids to the park to learn how to skate, take them in the morning. You’ll only have a few other users there between 7 – 10 am and you’ll have the park to yourself anytime earlier than 7 am. As Richard mentioned, the park is collision prone when it gets crowded in the afternoon. Stick with the morning sessions and your family will have a blast. Tobey is my favorite park. Go skate!

The park — which is the only free, public skate park in Memphis — has been in the works since 2006. It’s not huge, but there are two big bowls, plenty of ramps and rails, stairs and a snake run. There’s plenty for skaters of all levels in the $ 500,000 park. Some bowls are deep, some ramps are steep, but there are lots of easier sections for beginners. If you’re not into skating, there are plenty of benches perfect for watching. The park is open to all ages, but skaters play at their own risk. Protective gear is recommended for adults, and kids under the age of 12 are required to wear protective gear(knee pads, elbow pads and a helmet) and be accompanied by an adult. The park isn’t just for skateboarders. Roller skates, inline skates and bicycles are welcome at the park(Monday is the park’s designated bike day). The skate park is located at Tobey Park, behind the Board of Education(at Central and Hollywood). It’s free and open from 6 a.m. — 6 p.m. in the fall and winter and from 6 a.m. — 8 p.m. during the spring and summer.
