A very wise man once told me that it wasn’t about the quality of the suit, but the quality of the eye and of the tailor. Keeping that in mind, I buy all of my suits at K&G — but only because I know what I like and I have a very good tailor. That’s not to say that K&G’s suits aren’t high-quality — they have a lot of top brand names, and even some of the off-brand stuff is still pretty well-made — but for every well-cut, fine wool suit there’s five wide-leg polyester-blend monstrosities. It’s definitely worth sifting through the bad for the deals you get on the good, though. Two things to keep in mind when shopping here: I haven’t had very good experiences with their in-house tailors. I had them do the alterations on the very first suit I bought here, and ended up taking it elsewhere afterwards. In-house tailors in general are pretty limited as far as what they can do, and I get the impression that they often rush through things while charging rates similar to craft tailors. There’s no exception here. I buy my suits here and take them straight from the rack to a tailor I know and trust — you should, too, especially if you’re disproportionally built like me(52R/40W) and need everything altered. Speaking of sizes, this is the place to go for big guys. They have just as extensive a selection in big and tall sizes as they do for normal sizes, and you husky dudes know as well as I do how awesome that is. They have several shelves of size 20 and 22 shirts, extended-length ties, the whole nine yards. I usually try to buy suit separates if possible so that I don’t need to have the pants taken in, and K&G doesn’t stock much in that department, but with the money you save on the suit you can have the pants altered and still spend less money than you would if you bought separates at Macy’s. I was just out of college when I bought my first suit at a department store in PA, and I had all of 3 suits to choose from once they took my measurements. I always have plenty of options at K&G. K&G is great if you can dodge all of the really, really ugly stuff. If you go in there knowing what you’re looking for, you’ll never buy a department-store suit again.

I’d never graced K & G with my presence until I moved to Memphis. Hell fire this place is the bees knees! It’s a lot like T.J. Maxx or Marshall’s, but I find it to be a hell of a lot more organized and a lot bigger selection. K & G doesn’t offer up home décor either, just clothes, jewelry, bags, socks and unmentionables(I love that word, using it in that sentence just made me giddy). I have found quite a few fabulous items upon the racks at K & G since moving here. Just today I walked out of there with 6 Nine West women’s shirts, a necklace, a ring, 2 packages(each with 6 pairs) of men’s dress socks, a Sean Jean tie and 2 pairs of men’s Sean Jean dress pants for 200 bucks. That’s a lot of clothes folks! 4 bags full to be exact. In fact, I find such great deals here, I can very rarely bring myself to go anywhere else before first trying K & G. You should try them too. No one needs to know your brand name clothing was half price at K & G. No one. Hell, I ain’t telling!

This is a lot like a TJ Maxx. Basically, there are a lot of well-known and not-so-well-known brands that line the aisles of the store for well under retail prices. I spotted a few cute tops and some nice summer dresses for less than half of what I’d pay at the mall. It’s a good place to go for anything from casual to fancier dress. Men can find Jones New York suits for a quarter of the price. If you look hard, you can find some pretty sweet deals, especially on shoes.
