I’ve been to Do probably a million times and it is always a hit or miss, never consistently amazing or consistently horrible. This is definitely a solid 3 rating. What I do like are their martinis and variety of sushi. What I don’t like is the sushi doesn’t always seem as fresh as it could be. There have been times when I felt they had that weird not so good fishy smell that sushi just doesn’t need to have. The idea of eating sushi in Memphis erks me in the first place because no telling how long the fish has been on ice before it is actually delivered. That’s just my opinion. What I can say though is when I have had it really good — it is really good. Do is a great date place or place to hang out with your friends. Not very kid friendly which is totally fine with me. The atmosphere is awesome. Though it is a semi small restaurant, I think that adds to the intimacy of the place. I love the booths. They’re just so cozy to sit in. It is very Cooper Young and fits right in with the whole area oh so perfectly. I really should mention Do is the very first place I ever tried sushi and have been hooked. Now thinking about it, I need to pay Do a visit very very soon.

Veggie udon curry soup is amazing! I seriously crave it weekly. The sushi is… eh. We had the strawberry roll, which was my favorite. We also had two other rolls(one with crawfish, the other with salmon). Both were ok. The rolls are really small and the rice was a little dry. I think you can get better sushi for your money. However, I WILL go back for that soup! They also had some other non-sushi items that looked good. It’s also fun to sit inside with all the hanging sheets.

I had a mighty interesting experience at Do. We walked in on a friday night without reservations thinking we might be able to get a seat at the bar. Keep in mind… Do is very small. only a few tables inside and some outside. The only thing available was low table with some floor cushions in the corner of the restaurant. I don’t have a problem with being adventurous and sitting on the floor while i eat – but it felt really awkard to be the only two people sitting on the floor as we looked up at everyone walking by. I’m sure it was awkard for the servers as well. Aside from the weird seating experience, the service was fabulous… the waitresses were really attentive. Here were my favorites: the Rajun Cajun Special Roll(nothing really«cajun» about it except for crawfish… but man alive, it was a delicious balance of flavors and seafood), the Coconut Shrimp Roll with mango ketchup… the sauces they have with the rolls are just as delicious as the seafood they use. I could have done without the Andre Roll and the Una Don(which was BBQ eel with pickled veg and rice) – they were underwhelming. Their cosmo made with sake(although on the small) was so delicious, I had two.

The atmosphere is great. Inside: cozy and warm and inviting. Happy, pretty people, lovely servers, nice artwork. Comes with all of the Cooper Young charm we have all come to love. Outside: lovely as well, especially in the Spring. But, please, get some tables that allow one to place his or her legs under the table. Currently, you can’t pull up to the table. They are designed to seat two people on the shortest end but are oriented such that the long side faces you — they’re off 90 degrees — the supports run down that side of the table. I understand the retro furniture vibe, but being 6′ 1″, I was sitting about two feet from the table because my knees were hitting the table supports. Anyway: the sushi is good, it’s become my main sushi place. The place was filled to the brim, and it took about 45 minutes to get our food. Not terrible on a Friday night, especially when the atmosphere’s so good. I have a soft spot for BBQ eel nigiri, and they do it well(not that it’s all that hard to mess up.) Their other rolls are also good. Probably not the BEST in Memphis, but casual enough and comfy enough to become my favorite.

Pretty cool place. The atmosphere was definitely quirky as you would expect in Cooper Young. Service was good. Not great, but good. The bathrooms were clean as was the restaurant. I ordered the crunchy shrimp roll, veggie roll, and the California. All were good but the Crunchy was very very good. Price was pretty good too. A few beers, a couple of white whites, 3 rolls, and the ahi tuna box came to about $ 70. I will definitely be back.

I just had dinner at Do. Yum. Is Do the fanciest sushi/noodle joint in town. Probably not. Is it maybe the coolest? Um, yes. It’s been around for a while. A quiet little Midtown jewel that is happy to live with the regulars. I went with two friends, and relaxed on the couch by the front window. We had a couple appetizers, then invested in several rolls. The«Mindy roll», not on the menu should not be missed. The crunchy shrimp is a big and welcome departure from the rolls we are used to having at other local sushi joints, and the BBQ eel roll is pure eel awesomeness. The service was just as happy as you’d want, however, the tiny martinis could be a bit less tiny for the price. Walk outside on the patio and see a bunch of old friends and make some new ones. It’s a really fun, intimate good time. Give it a try, or maybe not. They seem to be doing ok without recommendations. Although, if you have more than three or four, it wouldn’t hurt to call ahead for a reservation. Yum again.

Shockingly, Memphis has many sushi options. While Do may not be the fanciest sushi joint in town, it certainly has the most personality. Try the strawberry kona roll… I’m not a seafood fan, but I make an exception for Do. I also recommend the tempura, miso soup, and avocado roll, which is my standard order. The drink menu features a good selection of cocktails, wine, sake, and beer. The«Champagne Dream» is the-best-cocktail-ever(champagne, plum sake, vodka, and a cherry). The outdoor seating is great for people watching most of the year. The indoor seating is intimate, with smaller tables separated by curtains and one long table in the middle. Make reservations on weekends or if you have more than four in your party. Tip: Do is connected to Beauty Shop so you can order off of both menus. So you also can get fantastic desserts after you finish your sushi.

Most creative rolls I’ve had anywhere, including Asia. Delicious food and nice environment.

The sushi was ok — not great, not puke inducing. I actually thought the quality of their yellowtail and salmon was really good. Overall, they serve way too much rice for the amount of fish. This was particularly obvious in my tuna roll. My least favorite item of the evening. The service was unreasonably SLOW. Our drinks and order were taken promptly, but it took 15 minutes to get edamame, and another 30 minutes to get sushi. I joked that maybe they had to defrost the fish. I probably won’t go back. I liked the service and the sushi at Bluefin better.

The high points of Do is the atmosphere and location. The location is very small, but cozy. The decoration is interesting and fun. The low points are the lack of simpler menu items. I prefer to have just plain items like tuna or salmon rolls. Don’t always like the fancy rolls with many ingredients added. Service was fun and quick although we did have to catch their attention a time or two.

I like sushi. I like it a lot. Memphis is not a good place for sushi… at all… in fact, it’s quite bad. I do however, like Do… I like it a lot. For sushi in Memphis, it’s the best I’ve found. For sushi in general(meaning compared to other markets), it can hold it’s own. Nothing to sit down and write a review on… oh wait… but a quality offering nonetheless. They have good specials, are busy on the weekend, and the staff is ridiculously friendly(which I find a nice yin to the yang of the Beauty Shop next door… get it? Yin-Yang… you know? Like… the Beauty Shop… are the yang… you know what I mean? Like… even though they are the same owners… it’s a Yin and a Yang… like… they’re jerks.) Moving on! Mindy is the sushi chef on the weekend… and she’s great. Ask for the«Mindy Roll»… it’s tasty goodness. The noodles, edamame, gyoza, etc. are also all quite good. For a more fun experience, sit up at the sushi bar… and order a bit at a time rather than the entire meal… good times shall be had. I leave it at four stars, because I enjoy it quite a bit and it’s always on the list of places to go. Give it a try.(Mid-tier price… you can get out of there cheap, or go big. Be prepared to wait a bit on the weekend, but they have a nice area to wait just to the right when you walk in. Eat your vegetables).

i love me some doctored up american sushi! can i tell you how little i miss that obnoxious aspect of the bay area, the one where white people think they are cultured because they eat SUSHI? please child! read a fucking book, learn a new language, go to a museum. don’t talk to me about your fucking sushi. at Do they don’t mess around– they actually put other ingredients on raw fish! novel idea! i think they may even put BBQ sauce and pulled pork on a roll or two– thank fucking god because I can only eat so much nigiri before i am totally over it. unless your fish was plucked from the sea that day and tastes like i am eating a pat of butter it better be dolled up with something.(see bar crudo in SF for this) but this is just one woman’s opinion, and yes, DO does have great tasting fish and simple rolls for those of you that require that sort of thing. what i love most about Do however is that damn kobe beef thai curry udon something or other soup that i manage to order order almost every sunday.(and YES they are in cooper-young and open on a sunday) my neighbor’s daughter is a chef there and takes serious pride in that dish– from the raw red onion and fresh basil, to the perfectly cooked noodles… i could eat that every day. also Do has just about the most friendly customer service in town, the gentlemen who works the night shift is totally charming and calls me «darlin» and the gals that waitress always make sure i have a drink and a place to sit while i’m waiting for my order. plus they play great music– i swear i heard yo la tengo and some old tina turner! have i mentioned yet that they will go into the beauty bar restaurant next door and grab red velvet cake for me too? yes, it’s tight quarters– but when the weather is right the patio is just about perfect. i think Do wins for all around awesome memphis dining out experience, 5 stars!

Another Karen Carrier success story, Do is a cute little sushi place in the Cooper Young area. I’m a big fan of sushi rolls, and Do has an eclectic menu of combinations. I prefer the BLT and avocado or the simple Spicy Tuna roll. A seaweed salad and miso soup to accompany my rolls, and I’m good to go. I’ve never tried the entrees, but I do like the crawfish wontons, and of course, the edamame. The place is kind of small, but there is a patio for the nice weather fans. Staff can be a bit slow, and reservations are probably a great idea as the restaurant gets pretty busy in the evenings.

I had a really great time at Do the other night. I went with a big group and we were all taken care of! The sushi was great. The wife is a vegitarian and they made her some specialty rolls that were fantastic. The food was a little on the pricey side and the interior seemed pretty lame to me. It’s nice that it’s right down the road from me but I still think I like Edo best for sushi.

This is a very sharp little sushi place — I believe that it’s owned by the same people who own The Beauty Shop and Mollie Fontaine Lounge — which, are also, not surprisingly, great, too. If you can, sit outside on a nice, warm night and gorge while you watch the passersby. It’s reasonably-priced sushi — all of the ‘wants’, including veggie rolls, for the raw fish-averse. Everything is fresh and not messed with too much, which will please sushi purists. Great location, too, right in the heart of Midtown.

I like Do’s tag line: «Eat. Dream. Sushi». And that pretty much sums it up. They are all about Sushi at this cute and cozy little Midtown hot spot. And I really do love my sushi(good sushi that is) and I’ve tried most all of the places around town where you can get it. Do is right up there at the top of the list. The quality of the fish is superb and the selections are creative. I especially like the Strawberry Roll. Others have already mentioned this, but it bears repeating. Weekend nights can be busy and you might have to wait. I would suggest going on a week night or getting there early.

Not the best sushi I’ve had, but they certainly do try. They don’t use skanky fish(always important), but I think they try too hard to make new combinations sometimes. I do like the classics. They get the job done with style. Here’s to you, Do. Just wish you weren’t so expensive.

After living in Los Angeles for two years, I developed quite the palette for quality snob seafood, and it goes without saying that I no longer eat sub-par sushi. A true sushi connoisseur may be skeptical about trying sushi in a town where bar-b-que is the true forte, but I believe that Do is one of the best-kept secrets in Memphis. I am partial to the crunchy/spicy stuff, and I was happily satisfied with the fresh and crispy crunchy/spicy shrimp and crab rolls. Do has a way of paring their fish with the right«stuffins,» if you will, where all of the flavors blend in a way that tastes fresh and ethnic, like you’re not in Kansas anymore. In addition to providing high-quality sushi that is paired with the perfect ensemble of rice and vegetables, Do’s atmosphere is warm and intriguing. Do presents a sense of ambiance that feels more like Greenwich Village than midtown Memphis. One meal at Do provides an economical, Memphis-style«staycation.» The word on the street is that Do is becoming more and more popular, and it may be difficult to be seated quickly during dinner time. Lunch may be a better meal choice to really relax and take the time to enjoy your sushi. And afterwards, you’re only a short walk away from Celtic Crossing for an afternoon cocktail on the patio.

Do = Yummy. This is a cute little spot that is next to The Beauty Shop. They really utilized the small space to create a cozy environment with small sofas and chairs. The staff is great and they offer suggestions that they feel better suits your dining needs. The sushi is fresh and good. The staff is awesome. They have young female sushi chefs that have as much personality as their rolls. They offer you a taste of their many creations. I suggest you try the Mindy roll. shhh its not on the menu :-) This is a great place to have conversation with friends, and staff. When I am back in town Do will be one of my «must go» spots. Again, Yummy!

Very enjoyable experience. A well varied menu of sushi to rival that found in SoCal, and a friendly coven of staff ready help the uninitiated. Depending on the size of your appetite, sushi can be pricey, but Do is as reasonably priced as you’ll find, and very well priced for the quality of both food and service. The atmosphere is a bit bohemian, but in Cooper Young, it fits well.
