I am a novice knitter and I went to the store for help. The woman fixed my issue. I asked about taking classes their since I live in the area. She told me that there are classes, but not many openings for new knitters. Sounds like the same people take the class over and over again. I went back a second time for help and she told me that if she was going to help me, I have to buy something from her shop. I explained that I was willing to pay her to fix my mistake. I also said that I was interested in a class, but could not get into one. These people are rude and I will never buy yarn here! I’d rather drive 5 miles to a different yarn shop where you can take a class and they are helpful! This shop had me in stitches… and not in a good way!

Sit ‘n’ Knit is small, but I always find something I want or need when I go in. Janet, the owner, is an excellent coach. I bought some lovely linen yarn there in 2008 to knit a lacy shell, and then got into trouble with the pattern; she not only showed my how to fix the error but how to recognize the difference in positioning between different methods of increasing and decreasing, so the same thing wouldn’t happen again. She’s also usually got some sort of charity running — if it’s not hats for troops, it’s baby blankets for hospitals, or some other good thing. I have marked the store as «pricey» because some of her yarn is VERY nice, and priced accordingly, but she’s also a good source for lower-cost basics, buttons, and knitting notions of all sorts.

I made my first visit to Sit and Knit in 2006 shortly after moving to Melrose. I never knit a stitch in my life. During a drop-in knitting session, Janet graciously showed me the basics of knitting and purling and I made my first scarf. Since then, I’ve been able to drop in from time to time to get help as long as she wasn’t busy. Janet helped me learn to turn a heel and recommended a first sock pattern, one that I use as my go-to pattern today! Whenever I need a particular shade or larger quantities of yarn, I can get it ordered and in-store within a week. When I’ve called ahead to look for an item, Janet has graciously offered to bring it to my car out front so I wouldn’t have to drag my two young children inside. She and the staff always go ABOVE what they need to do and I appreciate the kindness they have shown me. I am lucky to have such a great local shop just a short drive away.

I LOVE this place! I always get a knitted hat out of the deal and my wife gets to start a new project to work on! The owner is very helpful and is willing to help you with any questions you may have.

I stumbled into Sit N Knit during the time they were knitting hats for troops and have been a fan ever since. It is a small shop but they have a great selection of turbo needles so I always go there to buy them. If they don’t have it in stock, they will order them for you immediately.

Since my last post I attended the class and finished the mittens(happy birthday mom! here’s some mittens). Janet, the owner, is very sweet and quite helpful. But what brings this store up another star for me? They responded to a request for the knitted hats for U.S. soldiers drive for Christmas. Knitters gave it their best and they collected 420+ hand-knit hats for soldiers in a matter of weeks. I’m super impressed by this and delighted to know there are some very charitable knitters out there.
