I’m not big on buying shoes, however, I wanted a «nice» pair for nephew’s wedding and I wanted to be thrifty so I went to Payless, first. To my surprise the salesclerk found a pair for me after I said I don’t wear heels, but wanted a pair for the wedding. The clerk suggested a two inch heel with padding. It was perfect. He also gave me a coupon for 30% off hosiery and I was good to go. The down side is simply — curb appeal. The store does seem crowded, with floor to ceiling shoes. There isn’t really any place to sit as you try on shoes and the carpet needs to be replaced with tile. These are cosmetic issues, but nothing major. Still, I was very pleased with the service and suggestions. The shoes were very comfortable as well.

You’re searching for something. You hope and pray the store you are in has it so you can stop traipsing around the city looking for it. You can’t find it and so you ask an associate for help. What do you get, 99% of the time? Someone telling you the following sentence«If it’s not on the shelves we don’t have it.» And you roll your eyes, and leave; annoyed. This did not happen. My boyfriend is very picky and was looking for a black shoe that would be appropriate for work, wouldn’t allow water in, was comfortable and kind of like a gym shoe without being obvious. He found it! But it was a size 15. I’ll admit, I had no idea shoes came in that size. He wears a 12 wide or a 13 regular. This was not going to work. The price was perfect and it was exactly like what he wanted the last three weeks we were shopping around. So we asked Joe to help us fully expecting the bare minimum. But he said enthusiastically that he would go check in the back to see if there were any. Instead of taking our word for it, he came back out, looking disappointed, and began re-searching the shelves for us. He kept apologizing that he didn’t have it and that was nice because it’s not his fault; it’s a popular shoe, apparently. He offered to call around and we told him that was okay. Later on, we asked him if he wouldn’t mind calling another store. Turns out he called a whole list of stores and found one nearby that had several pairs of the shoes we wanted in various possible sizes. We were thrilled. He even gave us a coupon for $ 4 off for when we picked up the shoes at the other location. What outstanding service!!! This is what separates people who are jaded and bored in their mundane jobs, and who actually appreciates that they have a job in this world, and care enough to go the extra mile. I work in the service and hospitality industry and I gotta say, it’s refreshing when you’ve worked in the business and you see a shining star in your midst. Joe loves what he does and he makes that apparent. I hope wonderful things happen for him.
