I have been using Costco Optical for several years. I have always been happy with the products and service that I have received. The Doctor is independent from Costco. Negative reviews should be directed at his office and not Costco Optical itself. The staff that helps with the glasses and contacts are all very nice and knowledgeable.

Ummm… no. Please don’t go here. So, I found myself without vision insurance and wanted to get a checkup. I’ve been having issues with my eyes lately and wanted to make sure everything was OK. While I was there, I figured I’d update my glasses prescription. I heard that Costco was inexpensive for out-of-pocket, so I decided to give it a try. What a mistake. The exam was $ 79. The receptionist was rude. She wasn’t friendly or welcoming. How annoying. I cannot stand people who are rude for no reason– especially in customer service jobs. Ugh. The doctor wasn’t chatty. He barely spoke. I tried to explain the issues I was having with my eyes, and he completely ignored me. He didn’t even respond. He just started asking me, «1 or 2?» until he figured out my prescription. He kept saying things like, «weird» and«this doesn’t make sense.» Huh? I’ve never heard that before. He kept trying to put a «prism» in my glasses, but it made me see double. He then said I’d probably need one soon. Why? So I can see double? That doesn’t make any sense to me. Thankfully, he then looked at my eye with the bright lights. I went because I wanted confirmation that my eyes were healthy and OK. He said nothing. Comforting. He then walked me out and the receptionist attacked me for my payment. I turned to him to say, «so, is everything OK?» and he had already walked back into the room. No word, nothing. I stood there in astonishment debating whether or not I should march back in there and get some answers. The receptionist shoved my prescription at me and shooed me out. Awesome. Who doesn’t like spending $ 79 to find out nothing? Ugh. Such a mistake. Thankfully, I have vision insurance now and can go back to my regular doctor. I seriously would not recommend Costco Optical to anyone. It was such a waste of time and money.

If I could put negative stars I would. Wrong prescription, changed my brand of contacts without saying it was final when you walk out the door so now I have months worth of the wrong prescription that I can’t even swear because I have a stigmatism this doctors failed to notice! Waste of money … You get what you pay for and this doctor is trash!

I saw Dr. Barnes to get my eyes checked for the first time in years! I called around to optometrists throughout Southern Oregon to check on the cost for an eye exam and he is the least expensive. An eye exam for glasses is $ 69.00. A basic contact lens exam is $ 99 — which, I can tell you, is about half what other places charge. Dr. Barnes is a nice guy but not that chatty. I think my eye exam took about 20 minutes. His assistant(Margaret), is absolutely lovely. She gave me contact lens training as I’d never put contacts in before. The training costs $ 15.00 and she’s calm and patient as she teaches you how to poke yourself in the eye… which is NOT easy the first few times you do it! She’s very thorough with the training that she offers and her demeanor puts you at ease without making you feel rushed in the least. She’s really the reason I’m giving this place five stars instead of four. When I realized I’d been prescribed single vision lenses for distance only, she brought the doctor back out to discuss whether I should go with a single vision lens + reading glasses as needed or go for a progressive lens.(I should have been clear to Dr. Barnes about what I needed so that’s my error). Margaret made sure I was well taken care of and I left with a prescription for single vision lenses + a recommendation for what strength reading glasses to buy. I bought my lenses from Costco(you need a membership for that). I paid $ 76 for a six month supply of Acuvue Advance Single Vision lenses. Cootz OUT!
