Was really looking forward to eating here. Waiting on my friend to arrive and I was told that they had just decided to close early. Small town Texas for ya

Great food, great service. Staff is very helpful and friendly. Classic burger on Texas toast was the best, great Cole slaw. And for a nice adult drink try a spoon punch!

We’d been to Spoons before and had some good lunch. Dinner notsomuch. We ordered and appetizer and our orders. You’d think our server would have thought to ask if we wanted to hold off on our meal after the appetizer, at least put 10 – 15 minutes between. We got the app, then our dinner 3 minutes later. The food was lukewarm at best. Cold grilled cheese and warmish soup. A warm sandwich with sweaty cheese fries. Not what I’d expect for a meal. It seems as though our meal was finished before our appetizer, but they let it sit for a few minutes before bringing it to us. The place was no where near busy, now I understand why. Probably should avoid it if you have other options.

Pretty dang good, lots of options, cool place. They serve breakfast all day, which is a good thing to me… I love getting breakfast but usually I’m too busy/lazy/etc. to go out or make myself a good breakfast during breakfast hours… Anyways, I got the breakfast taco, holy cow it was huge! They aren’t kidding when they say it’s plate-sized. Contained big jalapeño slices, cheese, scrambled egg, sausage. I don’t care for whole jalapeño pieces but it was still good. The«cottage potatoes», while good, were cold coming out of the kitchen though. Not realizing I had a huge taco to contend with, I got some biscuts and gravy as well. They don’t have sausage gravy, so I ordered a side of sausage and made my own. Cream gravy was flavorful and biscuits were good. This is one of my parent’s favorite places, they also have lunch stuff like burgers. Overall a good place to visit, I’ll come back again, maybe order something smaller…

Mixed review here… This was our 2nd visit to Spoons. The first time was an hour wait but we were happy with our breakfast orders so all in all we were pleased. This time we came for lunch and there was a short wait. I ordered a reuben sandwich. The sandwich was completely cold. The cheese was not even close to being warm(no melted cheese goodness! Whaaaat?!) And the pentacle of all sandwich horrors. .. the grilled rye was soggy.(Sad trombone) Epic sandwich fail. At least the corned beef was lean… what little there was of it. I don’t think its that hard to make a hot grilled sandwich. Especially not a traditional sandwich at a supposedly«foodie» choice award winning restaurant. If you decide to eat here stick with the breakfast menu.

I had an excellent brunch with my wife. We both had the chicken and waffles and I added a single egg on top. I recommend this place to anyone passing through Mc Kinney.

I love this place! Love the migas and the king ranch casserole. Great place for breakfast, lunch and dinner! The staff and the atmosphere are great and keep us coming back! If you’re looking for a great brunch… hit up Spoons!

Great atmosphere. So many options to choose from. I highly recommend the fried pickles. The batter is akin to funnel cake batter from the fair. Amazing! The staff was really nice and friendly. The rest of our food was just ok. The frito pie was alright, nothing special. The BBQ brisket sandwich tasted like something from a high school cafeteria. We plan to go back again and try other things but will not order either of these two entrees again.

This place is super cute — we really appreciated the atmosphere for a casual lunch while in the area! We ordered the chicken and waffle, and the hail caesar wrap with sweet potato fries(+$ 1). The staff was very welcoming and our waitress was super sweet — it wasn’t very busy, either. Service was quick, and the food wasn’t bad(chicken and waffle was pretty good, while the wrap left a bit to be desired — the ends were left open, making it hard to eat). However, it was our drink order that set the tone for the lunch and turned the experience less than satisfactory. We ordered a strawberry margarita and I honestly am not sure if there was alcohol in it. I wasn’t sure how to address it with the waitress and being a younger couple(21 and 22) many bartenders won’t take us seriously. I didn’t want to drink it and with the $ 7 price tag, it was a bummer. Granted, I know the place isn’t necessarily known for margaritas, but it was disappointing.

Best home style breakfast on the square. The weekend Buffett is a great deal. $ 5.95 for kids and $ 10.95 for adults: our daughter can eat her weight in fruit; the boys the same for their applewood bacon. The staff is always friendly and courteous. Parking it Lot 4 is a pretty safe bet for quick access to the café. A nice walk around the square after breakfast is perfection to a Sunday brunch.

Not gonna lie — i enjoy this place a bit more than I probably should. This has become my go-to place on the square and I plan on going back for many more dining experiences. Spoons is on the corner of the square in downtown McKinney(see other reviews for commentary on how cute the square itself is) — parking is generally a pain, but there is a public lot just down the street from their location. There’s almost always a wait, but it does seem to move pretty quickly. This is not fine dining by any stretch, but the food is great — it’s basically what your mom or grandma would make if they were a pretty fabulous(and sometimes creative) chef. The menu is extensive with breakfast being served all day. The hubby and I personally enjoy their breakfast/brunch — the food is fresh, tastes great, and is not a budget killer. On the weekend, they also offer a breakfast buffet which has all the basics and is perfect if you want some of everything. The lunch/dinner menu offers everything from salads, to paninis, to comfort-food classics like chicken and waffles. So far we haven’t had anything that did not meet our expectations. Service is friendly and good, to be honest it’s pretty much exactly what I would expect at this type of place — drinks are refilled regularly, servers are friendly, but nothing I would describe as «exceptional». Overall I would definitely recommend Spoons for a low key meal with the family(or friends). We have happily added it to our regular rotation!

This is my second two-star review on Unilocal, and, sadly, I think breakfast at Spoons has earned it. I started my experience with high hopes, based in part on reviews and in other part on my belief that a quaint and foodie-conscious place like downtown McKinney could not possibly produce a poor showing. I was wrong, much to my own disappointment. Let’s start with the fact that I fully acknowledge the day after New Years in lovely downtown McKinney is a no doubt busy and busting with locals and visitors trying their utmost to get everything they can out of the precious couple of days of the holiday season. With that qualification, I will say that I still don’t expect to have to strain and make eye contact with a server in order to get attention. Nonetheless, the inattentiveness wasn’t that big of a deal. The lackluster breakfast I had was, however. I ordered Jose’s omelet, substitute grits for potatoes, with a biscuit instead of toast… and coffee, of course. The timing of getting my coffee was perfect, very quick. But the diminutive plastic mug(barely enough to hold an actual cup of coffee) was cheap looking and disappointing in light of the fact that the too-few servers were understandably running around frenetically just trying to maintain, with little time to spare for fill ups. The coffee tasted a bit tart and plain, nothing special at all. Now, on to the grits. As a native southerner, born and raised in South Carolina, there’s truly nothing worse than bad grits. I know, I know – this is Texas, not SC, so you should have ordered potatoes. And perhaps you’re right. But I do believe, perhaps conservatively, that if you DO choose to serve grits in a quaint little Texas town, you should offer something at least a mark above what ultimately tasted to me like instant grits. They had no salt at all… really, about as bland as bland can get. Blandness can’t be fixed all the time, and even my liberal addition of salt, butter, and pepper was unable to redeem these poor, neglected grits. If the absent flavor was a let down, then the overly watery texture was an insult. The grits needed less water and more love and attention. Perhaps yellow, stone-ground grits properly seasoned should be considered. On to the omelet. For starters, the eggs tasted like – and had the texture of – what I term«fake» eggs, i.e., the types of eggs one would expect from IHOP or another lower-end breakfast joint. Moreover, the tomatoes were tart; the bacon was soggy; and the whole thing lacked the slightest bit of salt or flavor of any kind. The pepper jack cheese on top was just… OK. Overall, very disappointing. Last of all, the biscuit tasted and looked far from homemade, and it was served not very warm. In all honesty, it tasted a bit like a Grands«butter added» biscuit that I haven’t had since I was a kid. Again, nothing at all special. At $ 13.26, the price is still too much for the quality of what I experienced. Overall, the whole experience was unfortunate. If you are looking for«meh» and mediocre breakfast foods(or if you are on a low or no-salt diet), then this place is for you. However, if you’re looking for a homemade-style, quality-driven, quaint breakfast place that adds its own mark and twists on an ordinary breakfast, I would urge you to skip Spoons and explore some other place.

Great experience. We weren’t planning on eating here, but we’re at a loss after the chef at Square Sushi was out. My kids loved the idea of breakfast for dinner, so we explored the square and found this gem. It was packed and crowded and a little loud, but had a great local vibe to it. The kids enjoyed their pancakes, eggs and bacon and I had the Big Tex, which is a pimento cheese, bacon and jalapeños in a panini. It was heaven! Highly recommend!

My party and I popped over after seeing a play on the square. I am so glad I noticed this place on the map! So many delicious coffee options, I ended up ordering two by the time I left. The chicken and waffles were delicious, as was the King Ranch chicken. There is an adequate amount of seating, without the tables being too close together(Cracker Barrel, take note…). Fun place to eat. I cannot wait to go back and give the breakfast menu a go!

When you walk to the Mckinney Square, it is like taking a trip through time. Back to a time when towns had a city center and the square was the heart of the city. I love the Mckinney Square, it takes you back to when there was a slower pace of life and reminds you to enjoy every moment. So, of course Spoons is a part of this pace. I saw some complaints about slow ticket times. This is not fast food it is a home cooking establishment. It’s a good thing your food is made with care and quality. This should also give you time to unplug from your phone and converse with your friends and loved ones. When you walk in it has a very rustic feel. it has has wood floors and it decorated with many antique items. It has an open concept, so you can see you food being prepared in the extremely clean kitchen. Now, it should be noted that Spoons has two sections the main restaurant and the Garage. The Garage is sometimes where they put the overflow from Spoons or its where people go just for coffee, dessert, and ice cream. You can also watch them making their amazing desserts if you sit in the Garage. If you get a chance to sit in Marshall’s section you will treated to top notch service. He is a very attentive server and knows the menu very well. Now, down to the food. My favorite item on the menu is the King Ranch Chicken Casserole. It comes with shredded chicken breast, tortilla chips, diced tomatoes, red and green peppers, onions, and Cheddar cheese served with Caesar salad, tortilla chips and salsa. It is made just like my momma made it and I promise you I always leave my plate sparkly clean. My hubby likes the Chicken and Waffles. It is hand battered chicken breast served with fluffy waffles. The hubby doesn’t put syrup on top he smothers it with their homemade chili. The desserts are why most flock to this place. The Chocolate cream pie is to die for! My mouth is watering just writing about it. Run, don’t walk to try a little piece of heaven.

A wonderful place to have a great lunch in the neat little town of McKinney Tx. On the square. Had a half of a ham, cheese and avocado, sandwich plus a cup of the best potato soup. Also we ordered a chicken salad sandwich and a pastrami sandwich, all fresh and excellent. Our waiter Randall was helpful and friendly. The inside is awesome. Will make a return trip, next time we are in Texas.

As an out-of-towner visiting McKinney, I had no preconceptions about Spoons Café. The downtown neighborhood of McKinney has a lot of charm and seems to have a lot of things to do — we’ll have to come back to try the rest. We visited on a Sunday morning and were told we’d have to wait 15 minutes to get a table, which would have been completely reasonable. Only a couple minutes later we were seated with menus in our hands. They have a breakfast menu, sandwiches and lunch fare, as well as a fairly extensive drink menu. Most of the drinks seemed to be of the typical brunch variety, such as mimosas. I had a bowl of grits, but my tablemates had more substantive meals including French toast, a cheesy potato dish, and omelets. Grits is an easy meal to make, but theirs is quite tasty; it didn’t taste like it was instant, as their were hearty clumps of grits in each bite and they tasted fresh. I do wish they’d included some butter to go with my grits. I also tasted the French toast which was sweet and had the right amount of crunch. The bacon was a little overdone but bacon is always good. I had a cup of coffee with my meal. Spoons makes the coffee in large carafes and them brings them around to refill your mug. Overall, the service was great. We had to wait a few minutes to get our food, but for brunch that is no big deal because you want to take your time and enjoy a leisurely meal. The prices were about right: my meal was cheap, but my tablemates spent about $ 12 per head. I recommend Spoons in beautiful if downtown McKinney.

We lucked out and came here during a not so busy time. So I gotta say, if you want to win my heart, treat me well and be nice to my kids. This place gets it. I don’t mind waiting, I don’t mind when it’s busy and service is a little slow; just make me feel like you want me there. My kids and I were seated in about 15 minutes, prior to, the girl at the front desk kept reassuring we’d be seated soon. Grade = A We are seated right by where they keep the cupcakes, this means my kids immediately want to finish breakfast and get their cupcake on… this isn’t a flaw, just a challenge since my kids love sweets. The seats were comfy and my waitress greeted me with water and a great attitude fast. Grade = A I ordered a breakfast taco, the kids ordered pancakes and sausage. The food came and wow! That was a BIGTACO. I mean like dude… I couldn’t finish the taco… I eat a lot… Grade = A My kids ate just enough food to convince me they were done, what they really wanted was a cupcake. This bothers me because I know they will be hungry later… that’s how they roll. This is not the fault of Spoons, just sharing my life… LOL They loved their food. The waitress kept checking back, filling the coffee and making cute comments to the kids; Winning. Grade = A+ I ordered one cupcake to split between all of us, the cupcake was rich and delicious. Loved it. I’ll say again, when a place gets it right, it’s a pleasure writing the reiview and I can’t wait to go back to Spoons and have some more breakfast. Next time I’ll walk around the downtown area a little bit.

Waitress«Shelby» I think took the time to actually give us directions to a golf course we wanted to see and was from the area. So nice to have somebody with a great personality wait on your table instead of a corporate robot order-taker with fake enthusiasm. She recommended the chicken Panini and a couple other dishes of which I ignored her advice and had the Mushroom burger instead which was Excellent. My mother had the Ruben which was ok and my girl friend had the Ceviche which was really good. Really Great Service. Excellent Bar. Cool and quaint. It’s like a 50s diner in a cool location. Loved it and will recommend to everyone I know!

There is nothing inherently wrong with Spoons. The food is fine, the atmosphere is very diner-like and casual, all fine, but my experiences have not been the most kid friendly. On my most recent trip a mom’s group I attend had planned to meet here, kids in tow, to have lunch. A couple of us arrived on time and were informed they would not seat us until all six of us had arrived. Fine, but with empty tables all around and babies crying, toddlers needing to be fed, and mom’s with new little ones not always running on time, it was torture. After about 15min of strollers blocking the entry while we waited and my little guy freaking out due to hunger, they told us they would seat us in the«garage». We exited the main restaurant and went around the corner to a separate entrance. We were seated at a large table with plenty of space. Great, right? Wrong. The«garage» was technically closed, so some poor waitress had to cover her tables in the main portion and then us in the back. I was ready to order for my son the minute we sat down, but our waitress didn’t seat us. I finally flagged her down and ordered for him. It was several minutes later before she returned with our drinks and we could order again. The food was fine and portions good, but the fact that our poor waitress had to keep making trips back to see us definitely made things take longer than normal. She was incredibly kind to split our check for us and I don’t believe any of this is technically her fault. I just wouldn’t choose to come back to Spoons any time soon. There are a handful of other restaurants that do a great job catering to parents with kids, have a different environment, the food is good and doesn’t cost as much either.
