I could tell that this used to be a nice course. Bent grass greens. Decorative trees and shrubs. Thoughtful layout. Lots of water hazards! But golf courses require maintenance. And when you build a golf course on top of a field of Georgia clay, they require lots of maintenance. The greens were acceptable, and weeds in the fairway and rough are only aesthetic. But the sand traps were horrible. Another positive was the lack of crowds on a beautiful Saturday afternoon. And it was $ 25 to walk. All in all, I would rather play here than a better-maintained but crowded course. But next time, I might just take a penalty drop from any sand trap.

Played here 2 weeks ago and I am really impressed with this course and the price! Staff is very friendly, the course is well taken care of and easy to play. Only thing I didn’t like was it is hard to navigate from hole to hole, the way it’s laid out is very confusing. Also they could stand to repair the cart paths. Overall though the course itself is fun to play.

I am an avid golfer who has played the game now for over 20 years, from my younger days playing at local public courses to the highest end country clubs in numerous amateur and college tournaments. I like to rate the courses I play on the following criteria: 1. Design 2. Condition 3. Pace of Play 4. Challenge/Degree of difficulty 5. Service 6. Value 1. Nothing too crazy here, your typical tree lined contemporary course. No holes really stand out as terribly memorable but none are poorly designed either. 2. Teeboxes and Fairways are bermuda and well grown in. I never had a bad lie or barren patch in the fairway which typically is not always the case until later the growing season. Greens are what you would think of for bent grass in August, burned spots where the mower shaved off a little too much and the grass never recovered. The spots that are green do roll well though. 3. Pace of Play– This may be a little biased as we showed up at 7:50 am and it just stopped raning, we literally may have be the first group out that day and played in 3:30 hours. Not bad by any means. 4. Challenge– Not terribly difficult, the course is short with all of the par 5’s reachable in 2. Tee shots are tree lined but never cramped. Par 3’s are the largest defense here, some are long and others are well guarded, all a good test of skill. 5. Service– Ehh, no cart girl due to the rainy day which is understandable, other than that maybe there were 4 people working the entire course from top to bottom. 6. Value– For $ 33 and change on a weekend you really cant beat it, it is a driver from downtown but not that bad.

I wish we could give half stars as The Cotton Fields Golf Club is really a 3.5 stars but I rounded up because it is better than just OK. An easy 30 minute drive south on I-75 to exit 218 and you will find the course tucked away just minutes from the freeway. Once you are there you would never know it. Visually the course is absolutely beautiful. The fairways are green and in great shape. Playing from the whites, the course is rated on the easier side of average and I would agree. The back tees add 500 yards and that definitely makes on a difference on a few holes that require you to carry over water. There are 6 or 7 holes that have water very much in play. There are a few holes where you must weigh the risk/reward of going for it or playing to a specific spot. My favorite for that scenario is # 14. A par five with water in front of the green. If you hit a good tee shot down the right side you can shorten this hole and have a realistic chance of reaching in two. The risk is if you are short you may either land in the water or hit the bank and roll back in. I chose to hit a nine iron to 100 yards and then hit a wedge on the green. Yes, I played it safe but was putting for birdie(missed it though — d’oh!) I really only have two complaints about The Cotton Fields — the greens were not cut short enough or not cut recently and it made putting difficult; and there was not a beverage cart. It is 90 degrees people, I need my beverages. Luckily I had a bottle of water and a Gatorade when I started and was able to hit the snack bar at the turn. I played here on US Open Sunday morning(also Fathers day) and the pace of play was good. I also found it to be a great value as once again, came through with a bargain rate of $ 39! At that rate I will be playing here more.
