We have been coming here for years. There needs to be a place like this on north 10th street in Mcallen to show the other«wanna be» bar owners how to have a good time without being over priced and how not to be stuck up or snobby.

This place is super chill. Been coming here for years, and I love it. The outside area is revamped. Best part it’s not super crazy like a club.

Great place to have a cold beer. I liked the picnic tables. Fun place to go with a group of friends. The barbecue sandwich was one of the best I have ever eaten.

I’ll second Kelly’s review and say that this place is really great. And just mention a few more things that explain my 4 stars(and not 5): 1) no hard liquor/cocktails and 2) its pretty far from town. Otherwise, the place is great!

How appropriate that my 700th review is of the place my bro is having his rehearsal dinner. Sophie’s has been around since the dark ages, which in Mcallen, was about 30 years ago when they finally paved the roads The SS Saloon is many things to many people and welcoming to all. In fact, there’s a wooden cowboy on the front that says«Come on in!» If that doesn’t convince you, the dirt cheap prices should. It’s got bikers, it’s got college kids, it’s got old folks bellied up like they’re glued to the bar stool. It’s got stage for music and a damn good bluesy jukebox. There are bbq pits and spreading trees, hanging lights, dart boards and a shuffleboard table. I wager this is the only bar where you’ll find a motorcycle hanging from the tree. And it’s BYO liquor. BOOM! Basically, it can be anything you want it to be. We’re using it as a raw event space for a fiesta — hanging lights, bringing in tables, fat candles and authentic mexican catering. But on a warm south Texas night, take a handle of vodka, buy some set ups, pop a couple dollars in the box and enjoy what feels like a bigger version of your own backyard.
