What a disappointment! I remember this place used to be a good old fashion service and good food. Now its just bad service and bad food. Waitresses don’t care about the customer and the lady at the register looks like she’s bored with her job and BITTER. My father used to take me to this place since i was a kid and this use to be good, now they don’t care. Probably the new generation that owns this restaurant are not strick with there staff anymore, the cleaning less of this restaurant is bad i mean bad… It’s sad to see a old tradition restaurant be the worst in every extent of the word.

Love this place. I’ve only ordered from their Bakery, but it’s always great. I even send empanadas to my dad in Florida because he loves them. It costs more to ship them than they cost, but it’s worth it.

Interesting, classic café with great history. But my food was not good. At $ 4.50 a plate, I can’t complain too much, but the chicken tacos had no taste and the beans were like from a can. I went because it was the only place on 17th with a crowd at 6pm on a rainy Friday night. I enjoyed seeing the crowd, watching the old-timers and families. The service was very friendly, and I stayed quite a while to get out of the rain. I wish the food had been better. I would go back, at least for the coffee and the crowd, but would not go there looking for great food.

Best kept secret of the valley. This is the place to go for authentic this is what my abuelita would cook me Mexican food. The price to food quality is ridiculous. They should be charging 5 times for what they are charging now. Yes it’s a hole in the wall and it’s old, but wow this is the real deal. This is authentic Mexican food, with no pretentious vibe or new age Mexican fusion mambo jumbo. If you want Mexican food done right, this is it, this is the best hands down.

I love this place sooo much! I always get the pollo guisado, its delicious! It gets really packed on the weekends, I always have to wait because i don’t like sitting in the back. They play the same music all the time but it doesn’t get annoying. The bakery is delicious also.

Every time I go into the Rex Café and Bakery so many memories flood into my head. In its time this was the center of Mexican American political and social life in McAllen. I remember going with my grandfather Manuel to the Rex and being greated at the door by «hola Maestro» by all these men in their 40s, 50s and 60s, and being told by my grandpa about how they were the men that had such and such a shop or ran such and such a place. It may no longer be that center of the world, but they still make great pan dulce and you can still find a good basic Mexican plate with all the bells and whistles. It isn’t trendy and it isn’t full of the chic atmosphere many want now days, but it is good Mexican food served by good people and with good hot coffee.
