Since Haley’s changed to Deli/restaurant it has become the place to go. The décor is light and simple. The food is great! There is more succulent meat on one chicken breast than in a whole meal at the big chain restaurant. The smoked meats are barbecue sauce optional. They are good enough without it. The pickle fries are awesome. We went for lunch and the place was packed. If your in Marshalltown you have to try it.

If you’re ever passing through Marshalltown, its worth getting off Hwy 30 and heading the five or so miles north to stop at this little gem. It’s what Hy-Vee’s delis used to be 20 years ago before they went corporate and eliminated much of the«home style» cooking of it. The portions here are generous and crafted with care. The noodles tasted homemade and the salads that you can choose from on the side definitely are. If you want a good meal that will fill you up for a fair price(Chicken & Noodles+2 sides and a roll was $ 6), its worth stopping in.

After reading comments on FourSquare, I decided to stop in one night and try their deli chicken. I was not expecting much, since this is foremost a local grocery store. They did have a small seating area in the back corner.(Similar to the deli areas at Hy-Vee or Dahl’s.) The chicken was very good, and the price with two sides was appropriate(more than you would pay at a drive thru KFC, but similar to a dinner at a place like Village Inn). On another visit, I tried a $ 4.99 chicken friend steak meal. Nothing special here — seemed like typical food service breaded meat. My understanding is that the chicken and BBQ is what they are known for. They do have a vast assortment of deli sides, and fountain sodas with free refills. Overall, the thing that impressed me most were how friendly everyone working there was. I have never been asked if I needed anything more than the times I have stepped in to this location. Haley’s apparently never got the memo that customer service was dead(pity most other places did).
