BBQ. .. Barbecue. .. Bar-B-Q… However you choose to spell it — I’m typically a fan. And I’m pleased to report that I’ve finally found some consistently good ribs. At a neighborhood barbershop no less! Located in the same plaza with Fitness 19 and Dev’s Donuts, every other Saturday this Grill Sergeant gets behind his trusty smoker and produces some of the tastiest ribs to ever pass these lips. Its typically first come /first serve — but if you call or text him during the week — you can ‘pre-order’ your food, thereby guaranteeing your fantastic gastric smörgåsbord of smoked goodies on Saturday! He has ribs, full boston butts and chicken(I think). I’ve never tried the sauce — because I’m a cavewoman — MEAT!!! — and I’m not sure who his butcher is — but the ribs are huge and meaty. Well worth the $ 25 I paid for a slab. I had enough meat for 3 meals, easily — 4 meals if I the taste of the ribs didn’t turn me into such a glutton. He actually pulls the ribs off the smoker, chops & slices the entire slab and packages everything for you — including your ‘rib tips’ — while you stand there. It really is an awesome value. Now that I’ve raved about the portions — let’s get on to the taste: One word: perfection. Want me to elaborate? Okay. They were oh-so-tender, pulling away from the bone with very minimal effort — with a lovely, light charred outside and that sought after lovely pink under the skin.(Last visit I got to watch him do his patented ‘thumb test’ — with gloves, of course!) He also caters events — the catering flyer lists typical soul food(ie mac n cheese, collard greens, baked beans, etc) — but those aren’t available on the Saturday pop-up menu. My understanding is the gentleman is also the owner of The Gentleman’s Cut barber shop — I actually ventured inside today to pick up my ribs and I found the layout inviting and open with a definite ‘family friendly’ vibe. The owner is warm, friendly and just seems like one of those folks you’d love to have at party — always smiling and joking. He gave mea a two-handed handshake and thanked me for my business which I always love — it just reminds me so much of charming, old-fashioned gentleman in my hometown — but I digress. The only reason I can’t give him the elusive 5th star is because he’s not open every day. Lol. Or even every weekend — so I feel stalkerish every time I call or text him to check«is THIS a barbecue Saturday or not?» I understand that he has the barbershop clients — but whatevs — its his fault for getting me addicted to the ribs. Keep up the great work Big A!
