This was the 1st time playing North Forty. The course was cheap however that is what you get. Traps were not raked and the greens were not cut prior to teeing off at 8AM. We were the 1st group off so we had to deal with dew on the first 5 holes as the sun came up and dried the greens. We had five in our group, my three brothers and my 25 year old son and we went off as a 3 and a 2 some. Since no one teed off for over an hour after us we paired up as a 5 some and figured we would keep an eye on any slow play on our part, which never developed the 2 some behind us was always 2+ holes behind us. At the turn the owner/general manager, informed the group that a 5 some is not allowed under any circumstances. I understand the notion of slow play and the problems that creates, however I also understand that North Forty is NOT Coghill and can certainly use the revenue that 5 golfers bring to the course. The next 2 some was some three holes behind and not gaining on our group. At ten we spit again, a 2 and 3 some however at the eleventh hole a Father with two young boys coming off hole 2 asked if they could jump ahead and would not slow us down. We said«go ahead, no problem». Well our other 3 some caught us at 12 and we joined up again. Heck, what was management going to do — lock us up. Well, at the 12th green here comes Barney telling us we have violated the course rules again. We could have thrown the Father and his two kids under the bus as for the reason why, but why get them in trouble. So our 5 some was kicked off the course and we were given a 9 hole refund. Actually, we were kind of tired of golfing so the owner did us a favor. As my brother the retired police officer of 30 years said, «I have been thrown off BETTER courses than this one». True true, there are better courses but the course was very cheap and very close for the weekend. I probably will continue to look for a «More Enjoyable» golf experience in the area. I don’t need Barney giving me grief when the parking lot was basically empty.

I’m hesitant to review this course, as it is never hard to get on the course. I do realize though that if it is stays empty, it probably won’t stay open. This is the closest course to my parents’ lake house. It was originally Peacock Ridge, which was then sold and has now become North Forty. It is unbelievably cheap. When it was Peacock Ridge it definitely had maintenance issues, but they are now clearly working harder to maintain it properly. The greens are in much better shape now, and most of the fairways are good as well. The biggest downside is they currently don’t have a liquor license to serve on the course. They do have one for the clubhouse though. I really hope this one survives.
