I have a cut and blonde highlights every few months. I have been to James before for cutting but never before for color. But in my quest to find a new go-​to stylist for everything hair, after a bout of disappointments and inconsistencies with previous salons, I asked James if he would do my color and cut.
I had no idea that a process of highlighting that I had actually been looking for, James actually does, and did a beautiful job of Balayage highlighting, bringing out gold and caramel tones in my hair that still (almost 2 months later) look natural and attractive. He has a salon set up in his studio as a private stylist and I would pay to have my hair done with him just to talk to him because he is a delight to chat with as well. With some over 20 years experience, there is no need for me to go anywhere else and would highly recommend anyone to go to him for updating your hair with rich and beautiful colors and exactly the cut you are looking for (NEVER cuts too much.)
I am seriously considering going from a blonde to a caramel brunette for the Spring, to replenish some health and vitality to my hair after too many years of bleaching and highlighting… but will be consulting with James first on exact color for my skin tone.
If you are into natural– looking color and soft layered cuts like I am, don’t hesitate and go to James. Just go.

I love my hair and I love James! He listened to what I wanted and made it look better than I ever expected. Very reasonably priced — and a fun time too. I’m definitely going back.

Yet again, James does not disappoint! I came to James during my travels to NY again. I wanted to cut my hair and fix the at home dye job I had done. I have been under a great deal of stress and James listened with an open ear and heart. He turned what I can only describe as a «hot mess,» into a beautiful new sophisticated look for me. I’ve known James for a long time, at once he used to work at the Deva Salon, one of the top rated places in NY and I am glad that I’ve finally reconnected with James after a while. He is very talented and has an eye on how to style hair and make them work with people’s personalities.

If you are one of those «I don’t read long reviews people» (like I tend to be), all you need to know is this: James is absolutely amazing — affordably priced, great conversationalist, and most importantly… GREAT CUT.
If you have curly hair (or not), definitely go to James for your next cut… and every cut after. He will not disappoint! I had my first cut with James about a month ago and it is just as fresh and easy to style as Day 1. I am extremely particular when it comes to my hair and I can say, with 100% confidence, that I have officially found my NYC stylist. See you in a few months, James!

I have been going to James for almost a year now. I could not be more pleased, both with my coloring and my cut. He persuaded me to go longer (was reluctant at first but agreed to wait and see) and I couldn’t be happier with the result. My son now goes to him for cuts, a good friend goes for color and cuts and even my husband now goes for cuts. No nonsense, always funny and alway real! I highly recommend James both for coloring and cuts!

I’m not one to post a lot of reviews but I felt this warranted a response because it was a bit out of control. I called the number from yep and whoever answered just said «HELLO? Hello Zach is that you??» I respond is this James McNally salon I’m looking to make an appointment? The man proceeds to say yes and asks multiple times why I’m calling from a blocked number. I apologize that my work number is a blocked number while he proceeds to scream at me for calling from a blocked number. I think this man is paranoid and just rude. Whoever is answering the phone which I’m assuming is James, works out of his apartment and was abrupt and rude. I don’t care how good he cuts or styles hair… if that’s how he’s treating his current or new customers I would want nothing to do him. I highly recommend never using this salon!

James has done fantastic colouring for me. I’ve never felt better about how my hair looks. I live in Europe but definitely see James when I’m back in New York.

I have super-​thick, super-​curly «bi-​racial» hair. It’s been a long, tumultuous, 32-​year love/​hate journey. I’ve been to many salons, purchased many products, and been through a number of bad experiences, so I’m verrry picky when it comes to my hair. Trust me when I say that James is awesome. I go to him for pintura highlights, knowing that one false move could leave me looking like a tacky low-​budget hoochie. But I get tons of compliments on my hair. It looks natural, but it now has more dimension and looks a little more edgy than it did before. He was even nice enough to touch up my hair for me for free when I went on my honeymoon and the sun made the top of my hair look a little bit uneven. His place is comfortable and homey, and he’s always entertaining.

I followed James from Devachan to Mario Diab to his new Studio. Why? He’s absolutely the best colorist I’ve ever encountered. He has a gift for knowing what will look good (and not ever «too much») and I’ve never walked out feeling anything but great. Also, he’s super nice and very sensitive to what his clients are trying to achieve.

James is AMAZING! I was bored with my damaged over processed hair and a good friend recommended James. His area of expertise is curly hair, but in my opinion, he is just as great with straight hair.
My straight, fine hair has never looked better. He has a unique way of doing highlights that gives hair dimension and amazing shine without all the damage. His single process color is also great. My hair doesn’t look damaged anymore, it looks healthy and well cared for.
James’ cut gave my fine limp thin straight hair a lot of body and it is so easy to style. Also what is key — James listens to what you want and how you want to look and gives you his advice. He doesn’t run amok with a scissor.
All in all I am a very satisfied customer!
