Well now that I’m waiting at DMV I thought I’d take advantage of my wait and review Social Security.
My visit was straightforward. I needed a replacement card with my married name. I will warn you when I left shortly after they opened the line was out the door.
When they open the security guard asks those in line if anyone has an appointment so I guess they can go in. You then go to a window and get a number and then wait till you’re called.
The guy who helped me was quite efficient and I was done and out in about 10 minutes although I did have to prompt him by asking about next steps.
Keep this in mind too. I got there at 7:30am to secure a place in line. They open at 9am. Also depending on your need there is some stuff you can do online as opposed to going to the office.

Thursday, arrived at 9am. Waited 1.5 hours to get a number, 1 hour later get served at counter. They cannot help, have to wait again. 4.5 hrs later, still waiting. Got in after 5 hrs, lady was very helpful.
Come after lunch if you have a simple request, lines seem shorter.
The workers here are doing their best but there are not enough of them and the facility is too small. The world’s greatest superpower is not at its best at the SSA in manassas.

I visited this Social Security office three times to obtain a form SSA-​1099 for our deceased Mother’s financial records — needed by our CPA to process her tax return.
My brother had sent a letter to the Social Security Administration (SSA) dated Feb. 27, 2014 requesting this document. Three months later, no response from the SSA. So I went over, stood in line for 40 minutes to inquire about obtaining this document.
When I got to the counter, I was told that I had to prove that I was an Executor of my Mother’s estate — of course I had zero documents with me. That was all I was told — I should have asked more questions.
I return a second time — with an e-​mailed copy of my Mother’s will. After standing in line for over 35 minutes, I am told by the lady at the counter that this document is not acceptable — they need to see the «ORIGINAL» document — no copies.
So I return a third time — this time with a massive notebook obtained from my Brother containing the original will and any and all other documents that anyone could possibly want. I stood in line for another 35 minutes — got to the counter, went through the process, showed them the original documents, provided my ID and the SS of our Mother — and they finally printed off a SSA-​1099 and handed it to me.
Had I known the SSA would only accept an original document — and had I visited the very first time with that original document and received the document I was requesting — they could have earned a much higher star rating.
Communications by the counter folks here is poor. They need to do a much better and thorough job of communicating what the requirements are. They wasted a lot of my time.

came on a tuesday at 2:45, was in and out by 3:05, lady at the counter seemed quite suspicious of me since I handed her my florida ID and a ss 5 form to have it mailed back to florida where my address was listed… after telling half of my life story so then she could understand why I was up here visiting and the purpose of me getting it done early was so was there when I got home because of a refinance on my mortgage I needed a new card… but the matter was handled efficiently so…4 stars

As the other reviewers below, I would give this location and Social Security overall 0 stars if possible. I went to change my name in September 2013 and waited in their outside line for an hour prior to the office opening and as you can see I still have not received any assistance from SS and it is almost January. In the past two months I have called the Manassas location every day leaving messages for Managers NEVER to receive a returned phone call. I have contacted the 1800 number several times and received NO helpful assistance. I have emailed the main office and have only received emails asking for more information NEVER any actual assistance. My next step is to contact the Congressman for the district of Manassas to try and get my name changed. I wouldn’t care about my name change at this point IF THEY HADN’T DESTROYED MY SOCIAL SECURITY CARD in September when I visited.
In the future if I ever need medicaid, medicare, disability, name change, social security card replacement etc. I’ll probably just go without it because of the hassle of trying to get anything accomplished and the frustration of waiting for months trying to figure out what’s going on.
I’m also super excited that I’m expecting my first child and I’ll have to put my maiden name on the birth certificate because I didn’t start changing my name 6 years ago in preparation.

My experiences with this office have been very negative. I went there to submit an IRMA request for Medicare on 11÷8÷12 and was told it would take 6 — 8 weeks. I called the Manassas office 11÷27÷12 and spoke with the agent handling my case for an update, to see if my paperwork was properly completed on my part and being processed. He refused to give me the status, sounded overworked and short-​tempered, and said these actions take 2 — 3 months or maybe 3 — 4 months, don’t bother to check, just wait for the letter to arrive with their decision.
I called the national number on 12÷10÷12 for an update, with no results (still pending). They recommended that I go again to the Manassas office to get an update. I went to the Manassas office on ¼/​13 (2 months after my request was submitted), waited 90 minutes to be seen, and was then told by the window clerk that it takes time to process these requests, just wait for the letter to arrive. They would not check into my particular case to see where it was in the process (maybe it is lost, who knows the status if they do not check?).
Called the national number again today (2÷8÷13), 3 months after the request. Was told that the action is still pending… after 3 months! They again told me they cannot help me determine the status of my case, that it takes time, and that I should go to the Manassas office for an update. They have sent messages from the national call center to the Manassas office asking for a status update but the Manassas office does not reply to them.
So, after 3 months, I have no idea what has happened to my request, which is ostensibly «pending,» where it is in the process, or an estimate of when it might possibly be decided. I hesitate to spend a half-​day again going to the Manassas office and waiting 90 minutes just to be told again that these things «take time.» The Manassas office is coldly non-​responsive to individual citizens’ requests for status on their actions, whether you go there in person, call them on the phone, or have the national call center folks send them an electronic message. They simply do not reply and demonstrate no interest in your concerns.
Sad commentary on our government and how it interacts with its citizens.

If I could give it zero stars, I would. I took a day off work to go to the office and change my name after I got married and received a form indicating that I should receive a new card in the mail in 1 – 2 weeks. That was 9 weeks ago. I have since called the national toll-​free number twice, who have reportedly resubmitted the request. Calling the phone number listed here for the office sounds like it is trying to connect to a fax machine.
I was able to get a final, notarized copy of my marriage license from the foreign country where I was married in less time. I really am not sure what else I can do besides the rinse and repeat cycle of calling every three weeks in the hopes that it works someday.
