A wonderful«special occasion» restaurant. Delicious German meals with side dishes served family style. Make sure to go with a big party so you get ALL the sides. Favorite items: sausage platter, jäger schnitzel, mushroom soup, red bell pepper soup, spätzle, mashed potatoes and the most amazing creamed corn you will ever taste! The German beer and wine selection is fabulous and so is the wait staff.

Blast from the past, super oldschool in décor and plating. Portions are HUGE. Everything is delicious. Pricing is a little bit high for being in the middle of no where, but based on the portion sized, I understand. We got the weiner schnitzel and the special of the day. Schweinhaxen(which is really the only reason why I went here). It totally reminded me of the time we had the porknuckle in Munich for Oktoberfest. Absolutely divine. I took off a star because of 1) the seating was heinous. The tables are very low and cramp, and wires are everywhere with random attached mini lamps(probably a renovation is required). 2) I was NOT attended by the hostess. She greeted my husband, and other guess prior to me, even though I was standing right infront of her — she even took an order on the phone before greeting me. I normally would take away stars for being too old school, but it is the only place I can get this kind of authentic food. even if it’s a few hours away.

Best food, great beer selection, and awesome atmosphere. We happened to be passing by after a weekend retreat at Yogaville. We were starved from eating vegan food all weekend, so we splurged! We ordered so much, and there wasn’t one bad thing. I wish I still lived in VA so j could go back there!

My family and I stopped here for dinner on our way home from a trip to Monticello . It was about 7PM, so we were expecting to wait, but we wound up waiting longer for the hostess to come back to hostess stand than we did for our actual table. The hostess was a little rude and had a very messy floor plan of the restaurant, which she used to keep track of the guests that come and go. They definitely need an updated system, and maybe another hostess to be on duty during the dinner hours. We didn’t have a reservation, but got seated in about ten minutes because a party that had a reservation failed to show up, so we took their spot. We got seated at a table in the first part of the dining area. It was extremely tight back there, the people at the table next to use had to move their chairs just so we could sit down. Our waitress was nice for the most part but was rushing us through our meal. We asked for a dessert menu when she cleared our main entrees, and she said«I’ll have to check the time left on your table». ok. HOLDUP. What? Excuse me? I worked in a restaurant for a long time, and you NEVEREVER are to rush a guest through their meal. Reservations are based on estimations… you CANNOT put a time limit on how long a PAYINGGUEST has to eat at your restaurant. I was really disgusted with the waitress at this point, but I really had my heart set on some German Chocolate cake, so I ordered anyway. And took my sweet time eating it. Overall, the food way just okay. Service was horrible, and the building itself needs some renovations, as well as the system the hostess uses. Maybe someone should put them on one of those Food Network shows where the mean professionals come in and whip them into shape. I will not be back.

My first visit impression. I was disappointed to see cigarette butts littering the ground in front of the entry way. When we walked in I first noticed the seating waiting area which really could use renovations. It made me doubt our decision to eat here. The cushions were warped and looked really old and a few strange clothing items were hanging at a very visible coat check area. It just looked bad. The next thing I spotted was the kitchen which you can see into. Nothing smelled good nor did the kitchen look good from our vantage point. The hostess was seating someone else so we waited for her return. The hostess and our waitress were very friendly and accommodating. The dining room was dated and could also use a makeover. The rug was warped in areas and some the art was completely faded on the walls. Just little tender care would go a long way in making this place better. The bathroom consisted of a single stall and smelled of urine, which was off putting. The prices were high. We heard that the portion sizes were huge so we decided to split an entrée. The goulash was tasty and came with two sides. We tried the pasta and green beens which were both good. The service was attentive. It would be nice if the owners fixed the place up though.

This was incredible! It cannot be overstated just how much food you get. It’s crazy. But the food is also all so good! Me and my fiancé were visiting the area from Brooklyn and this place was recommended by our hotel. I got the pork shoulder special over sausage filling and fried onions. OFFTHECHARTS. seriously, soooo good. My fiancé got the sausage platter, which was also so flavorful but still very classic German. Our waitress, Diane, made me have faith in the human race. I think I love her. Highly recommend!

Simply put, I love this place. Aventinus on tap?! Amazing. Great food. Generous portions. Great atmosphere. I’ve traveled the world a few times over and I brag about this restaurant alot. My first time here was during Restaurant Week and it was SPLENDID. The second time, I tried their normal menu and it was just fantastic. One of my absolute favorites.

After returning from Munich less than a month ago I can say this food is very close to authentic. Delicious as well as huge portions. Great German beers on draft as well. Will definitely return.

This is a cute German restaurant, and is nicely decorated with great ambiance and the service was good, as was the beer. However the food was not good at all. We had 3 dishes, a pork chop with applesauce, cordon Bleu and the sausage platter, as well as 4 of the side dishes that come with every meal. All the sides were inedible, and the entrees were not much better. For $ 20 – 25 a plate I expected much more. Despite the great ambiance and good affordable beer, the food just was not good enough to go back.

Pricy, but authentic and super tasty. Worth a visit for a special occasion. Authentic German Bier selection and impeccably clean in every nook and cranny. Servers and staff really know their stuff and dress in Traditional German outfits. Really worth a stop if you’re in the area. Get the red cabbage as your side! So good!

I decided to try this place out based on the reviews, and was impressed by the building upon arrival. I was promptly seated by a hostess, greeted by my waitress, and had a silent assistant place a bread basket on my table. I ordered the curry worst for a light dinner, and German chocolate cake for dessert. The curry worst was a solid five stars, and the first one I’ve liked outside of Berlin. I might have even enjoyed it more than the one in Berlin, as the presentation was perfectly executed, with a carved scallion and radish as accents, served over miniature potato pancakes. The German chocolate cake was a bit of a let down, but a Google search showed that it’s really an American cake named after Sam German, and his chocolate. Since it’s my ignorance that I assumed that I would be getting a German national dessert, I am not including that experience in the star rating. This is a restaurant I’ll come back to, but will skip the dessert.

This little restaurant located 30 minutes from C ‘ville serves traditional German food. Food is simple, yet of decent quality(nothing fancy). Portions are huge and an entrée can be easily shared by two hungry adults(really). Décor is a little bit strange and somewhat rundown. If you share food prices are ok, if you don’t, it is pricy for the type of food you get.

The food was great and service was good also. Celebrated my father’s 60th and had a large group including children. Portion sizes are outrageously huge which I think is part of the appeal for most people. Would be nice to see some other fresh and lighter options on the menu for diners who don’t want to indulge.

This place takes you on a trip to traditional Deutschland. The authentic German food is prepared perfectly. The price seems a little high until you see the generous portions and taste the richness in the food. I haven’t identified a favorite dish yet as they are all good. Today I really enjoyed the schweinhoxen special. We like to stop by for a special treat when we get a chance as this a long way from home.

We stopped in for C’ville area restaurant week and were able to try some GREAT food at a very fair price and WOW, it knocked out socks off! The same family that opened this very popular(and somewhat famous) German restaurant in 1974 still owns and operates it. All of the dishes they prepared for our group were done very nicely and were also very hearty, so bring your appetite! Bar area was beautiful with exposed plank walls and ceiling, like you’re in an old lodge or cabin. The servers all wear the traditional Dirndl, which added to the ambience. We don’t drink beer, but they appeared to have a very nice selection on tap for beer drinkers. Desserts are all made there and, once again were incredible! They were extremely busy on the Saturday night that we went. I’ve heard it’s like that all the time, but they did a FANTASTIC job with the wait. We’d recommend reservations!!! We had them, but those we saw come in without them were still taken care of with minimal wait. Service we received from our server was awesome! He was very friendly and he explained the menu, as much of it is written in German(the names of the dishes that is). He was prompt and attentive the entire visit. Only issues we found — There really isn’t enough parking for how crowded they get. The building is beautiful, but some of it is rather dated, like the peeling wall paper. Love all the other«older» decorations, but the wall paper should be repaired and the restroom are horribly dirty and the women’s restroom in serious need of repair!!! Overall, we can’t wait to go back. We also want to try their other location in downtown F-burg.

I used to live in Holland and visit Germany regularly. I was on my way back to Manassas from Charlottesville and had passed through this area several weeks ago, so THIS Friday, on my way north, back to my home I stopped here. I thought I was up for a treat, and I was let down. The building seemed spot-on with the Gasthauses of my past experiences as soon as I walked into the place. My GF and I were swiftly ushered upstairs which was great, and we were seated at a table near another family. This was fine initially. But the ambience of the 2 screaming children and the anti-semite father was too much to bear for more than 5 minutes after I completed my entire my meal — I am not Jewish, but that was surprising to find someone blaming Jews for this and that. To address the food, I got the meat and cheese platter which cost $ 9 and it was literally made of SWISS, DUTCH and FRENCH cheeses that were cubed and clearly purchased from the local grocery store and dumped from the bag. What a joke! The meats were deli cuts also from the local grocery store. So, what would cost me $ 4 for the equivalent portions if I made it at home myself — I felt really let down. On to the main course, and here is the counter to all of my negativity; my girlfriend got the Duck and she loved it. I had a taste and it was tasty, so there may be a little reprieve. Then I got the Yaeger Schnitzel as my main dish, and it was tasty as well. The sides we got were green beans, glazed carrots, mashed potatoes and spaetzel. The spaetzel wasn’t cooked right, it was starchy, but by the time I heard all of the screaming, realized I had another 1+ drive to go and my stomach was turning(who knows why) from the schnitzel and the mushrooms — I was ready to pay and leave. I wish I could have stayed much longer and tried a lager or other beers. I would have also loved to try the streusel as well.

FOOD, glorious food! The Bavarian Chef is amazing. Even if you think you don’t like German food, you’ll like Bavarian Chef. They have something for everyone on their menu. You WILL get delicious food. You WILL leave stuffed. You WILL leave with a doggy bag. You will pay a fair price. You will have excellent service. If they have it, you have to get the roasted red pepper soup with lump crab meat. SO delicious, and almost a meal in itself as it is very filling. You also MUST get the Bavarian nut ball dessert. My favorite meal, also a special, is the Alpine Schnitzel. Incredible! Great beer menu, too. The Bavarian Chef is in the middle of nowhere, but it is also a destination restaurant. I’ve brought friends from out of town/state to «The Chef» many times. If you’re ever in the Charlottesville area, do yourself a favor and go to The Chef. You won’t be disappointed.
