Thanks Adam for being the first reviewer, wasnt sure i wanted to be the first to go down this Unilocal cyber space road of reviews. The encased pocket of food is good in theory, though poorly executed here. The buff chick was shredded chicken with hot sauce in a bun. It seems like it wanted to be like Slide’s buff chick sandwich. The kolache contained dry finely tore up chicken with much less taste. The veggie pizza kolache was worse than the chicken one. Unfortunately it reminded me of sitting with my millions of friends in elementary school, cause I was one of those«cool kids», on those long white folding tables, eating Tony’s single serve round cheese pizzas. The dough of this was better than those pizzas but the flavors remained the same. Pasta sauce can range so many ways and it’s bad news bears when it’s bland. The sweet kolaches are better. The dough should be crispier, indicating freshness. The cream cheese flavor over powers the chocolate lacing.

The Wednesday food cart tour on Science Dr. is a bit of a crapshoot. My new obsession, Slide, didn’t arrive by the time I bailed for lunch. I saw this food cart, BJs Kolaches. Wow. Interesting! Before ordering, I checked with Siri to determine WTF a kolache was supposed to be. Was I going to munch on something totally inedible? Siri thought I asked, «What is a car wash?» Hopeless. I decided to Google it. Google«told» me that it was Czech sweet soft dough pastry filled with stuff. Um… sure. As you can see in my photo, they’re three bucks each. The beef brisket and spinach & artichoke(S&A) spoke to me for some reason, so I snagged them. They are about a little larger than a wallet and twice as thick(well… at least my wallet). They had a little density, but I was concerned because it was lunch and I was hungry. I busted it open and they were pretty well filled. The beef brisket was glistening and the S&A were waiting to be closed(that looked a little nasty). Biting into it, the dough was very soft and mildly sweet — kind of like mixing the dough for a pork bun with a knish. Pretty pretty good(as Larry David would say). The filling for the beef brisket was tasty; the meet was tender(minus a little bit of tendon) and seasoned well. After several bites, it was down the hatch. The S&A was a little less successful. It tasted like any potluck’s warm spinach & artichoke dip … even a little saltier. I kind of put the blame on me for not putting 2+2 together at the cart though. My concern about feeling content with the portion was appropriate. These were the size of two large pork buns or 1 Hot Pocket — Soft Baked Sub(appropriate, since there are plenty of similarities between a kolache and those darn pockets). It’s more of a snack than a lunch. If I weren’t very hungry and walked past this cart again, I would be interested in the spicy kielbasa or vegetarian pizza, but certainly didn’t find anything with the samples I had to make me think about it past this review.
