Shahenshah isn’t exactly the most visible establishment from I-475; after coming off the freeway at Exit 3, you’ll want to head west on Eisenhower Parkway for a few yards before making a right on Romeiser Drive, followed by another right down a short driveway. But they’ve made the best of their awkward location, plastering grand opening signs up and down the road. I found the interior a bit dark, stuffy, and drab, with cloth drapes covering all the windows, but the guys running the restaurant are more than friendly. I went with the veg thali($ 12.95), along with a mango lassi($ 2.50). As far as thalis go, I’m usually more a fan of the South Indian style; they do North Indian-style thalis here. The good: Staples are mostly there, including papadum, a few chutneys, and a flaky naan. Everything properly served on metal dishware. A very earthy dal and an average veg korma, though I’ve admittedly never been a fan of the latter dish’s sweetness. A real ability to turn the heat up or down per customer’s request. Tasty lassi. The not so good: No curd, no achar. No sweet dish! Palak paneer with a slightly too-thick consistency, with heat but without too much flavor. Rice with a peculiarly fluffy texture that reminded me of the long-grained, instant variety. While I’d normally take the good with the not so good, considering that this place runs about 20 bucks a head with tip(and I went with the cheaper vegetarian option), I’m not sure I’ll be back. Do take advantage of the dine-in coupon on their website, though, offering a second entrée half off.
