If you are like me, and LOVE sushi, I highly recommend this restaurant. My fiancé and I travel for work, so we are always on the look out for the best sushi places in town, and this by far out ranked every other place we’ve tried in Macon, and rivaled some of our favorite sushi restaurants across the states. We didn’t try their hibachi menu, so I can’t speak for that, but if you are looking for a place that serves quality sushi… THISISIT. I’m scared to even try any more sushi restaurants because Mikata blew me away, and I honestly don’t know if anyone else can compare! Thank you, Mikata, for restoring my sushi faith here in Macon!

My husband and I have been going to Mikata since we were in college, and it has maintained its high quality for fifteen years. The sushi in particular is great; it’s probably the best in Macon. Get the Hawaii Roll — you won’t be disappointed!

The rolls are big but that’s because they’re loaded with rice! Plain sashimi was fresh. Waitress very nice but place lacks in décor – from dirty front doors to an overall tired feel.

Waitress good, sushi average and hibachi below average. The Yum Yum sauce was terrible. Normally the yum yum sauce is the highlight of the meal but I wouldn’t recommend it here. as I stated, the waitress was very pleasant and didn’t have issues with the service.

Delicious food! The best Japanese around. Blows other Japanese places out of the water! I highly recommend it. We’ve been going for about 20 years and it never gets old.

Everything we had was excellent. Very clean and food was very good. Chef was outstanding. When visiting Macon we will be back! My husband had the filet and shrimp and I enjoyed shrimp and scallops! Yummy

Biggest and yummiest sushi rolls you will find in Macon, anywhere actually! Some of our favorites are: Tiger roll, New York Strip roll, Paul’s special roll, Dragon roll! Tano, the sushi chief really makes awesome sushi! Very fresh, thick & large pieces of fish, more than enough veggies and sauce! We don’t eat sushi anywhere else but here. But we are moving soon so we won’t get to eat here anymore :(

Kim S., Thank you for responding and showing concern for your product. I truly love coming in and had been a regular once a week for a few years. I would be happy to give more details but really do not want to on an open forum like this because my intent is not to put down your business. To the contrary, I would love to return. The people, atmosphere, portions and prices are what drew me to you and kept my business for so long but on more than one occasion I had become sick and a guest of mine mentioned, she too had become ill. This last visit was severe. Please leave me a contact email address and I will be happy to respond. Regards, Wayne S.

I’ve waited a very long time to write this review to make sure I didn’t say something I would later regret. In all honesty, this restaurant has some of the most disgusting sushi I have ever had in my entire life. I spend a lot of time in Atlanta and am from Seattle, so I know fresh delicious seafood when I taste it. This place does not give you that. The portions are way too large and of low quality. This restaurant overcharges you for absolutely terrible quality food and horrible service. The mackerel nigiri I tried was extremely salty and had the texture of cooked meat, which is obviously not how sushi is supposed to taste. After a few poorly executed rolls, my boyfriend and I decide to get some hibachi, thinking it might be better. We were so wrong. The portions were way too big, everything was overcooked, and it took way too long for any of our food to come out. Maconites, please don’t waste your money and time here. This place is fooling you into thinking that this is what sushi and hibachi should be like. It was genuinely one of the worst meals I have ever had in my life. Maybe I’m just fortunate to have experienced excellent quality sushi and seafood in my life and it has tainted my views on things. I understand how the location in middle Georgia might make it difficult to get fresh seafood, but I don’t think the prices should be this high for such I terrible quality. Sell it like it is. Don’t try to make it seem better than it actually is. I definitely will never be coming back here again. As a student at a university in Macon, I don’t know where I’m going to go now for my sushi cravings without having to drive all the way to Atlanta…

When I used to live in Macon proper, my aunt was the first to introduce me to this place. On a whim, with sake in hand we ventured forth. They have the traditional Hibachi set up(which is always fun with family and children!) but we came for the sushi. The establishment is run by a couple(the hostess and the chef himself) and after that fateful day, we never stopped coming back. The taste and amount of sushi and shashimi is unreal– so fresh, so melt in your mouth wonderfulness that we could not help but come back for a sushi fix. I have many favorites, but by far my fav is the salmon shashimi. They have some fun names for their sushi and a list of ingredients if the name is intriguing. They actually have a «Viagra» roll which I politely declined to have despite my spouses jocose manner of reference. There is also a nice«loveboat» sushi/sushimi platter that’s perfect on a romantic date– have you heard of this, sushi elegantly displayed on an actual miniature wooden boat that serves as your plate? Well now you have. I recently was able to visit again and was gloriously full by the end. I’ve been to many other sushi places, in several different states but none of them compare to Makata’s. Macon is a little south from the city but is a must stop when in town.

Mikata is a real treasure, the kind of restaurant that you selfishly want to review poorly in order to keep it for yourself. But it’s too good, so let’s be honest about Mikata. I’ve been about four times so far(and it would be many more if I lived in town). Here are the highlights. –Food is delicious. I can vouch for the sushi and the udon, both of which are great. The sushi is always generous with the fish, and the flavors combine wonderfully. The udon also has a delicious broth that’s wonderful with shrimp tempura. I can’t vouch for the Hibachi, but I’d trust Mikata more than anywhere else I’ve been. –The service is polite and professional. Some restaurants waver between detached and obsequious. Mikata is attentive without being intrusive, and the staff is very nice. –The atmosphere is muted and laid back. Mikata isn’t the place for garish colors or lots of noise. The restaurant is spacious, and the surroundings unassuming. The chairs might do with an update for aesthetic reasons(and maybe the carpet too), but they’re both perfectly fine. –Mikata’s prices are quite reasonable for what it offers. There’s definitely no dollar menu, but you can get a very satisfying large sushi roll for less than $ 10, which is really the best you can get anywhere. If you like great Japanese food at reasonable prices, give Mikata a try. EDIT from 6÷6÷2015 I’m not changing anything written above, but am adding an addendum since the quality is not uniform or entirely reliable. Last time I went, I ordered two sushi rolls. I’m not sure what it was, but something was way, way, way off. The vegetables in the sushi tasted old, the shrimp tempura was totally dry and bland, the rice was also dry and bland, and there was way too much cream cheese. While I still like Mikata, the experience was bad enough where I’m taking a break for a few weeks.

Holy cow the portions! 1 roll = 3 normal sized Atlanta sushi restaurant rolls. And really very good too. Good sushi in Macon, GA? YES!

This place serves serious Japanese food. Very elegant and beautifully decorated. The food is prepared right before your eyes on a hibachi. Dress appropriately, casual to formal wear. I get the impression they won’t allow sandals and tank tops. I wish I had a chance to take pics of the food and service but it was all so amazing I decided to enjoy instead of document. Sushi was very fresh, service was on point. Be prepared to eat some delicious food. Take your date here, have a celebration here, a great place to take a group of family and friends to watch the chefs prepare your food and have a good time.

I travel all over the Southeast and eat sushi at least twice a week. This place is on top of my list. I was blown away by the generous portions(sushi) for the price. I will be back every time I am in the area.

This is definitely a great place in Macon for sushi. For some reason, the sushi took 45 minutes to come out. Um. Yeah. Does sushi take that long to make? The sushi my friend and I had was divine. Now if only I could remember what they were. Eh. One was a special while the other was a cooked kind – lobster & crab I believe. The only thing is that these rolls were huge. It would have been nice if they were smaller so that we could have shared more pieces. It would have made eating easier too so that we didn’t have to stuff these overtly large things in our mouths. :\ Overall, this is a great place for sushi. The price wasn’t bad either(anywhere from $ 7 to $ 10). Atmosphere was a tad lacking. This place has pockets of empty spaces all around the restaurant making the ambiance less appealing. Service was just eh since everyone seems to all over the place.
