Generally, I believe that pizza is pizza is pizza. With the exception of the very few places that are able to pull off a stellar and unique pizza experience(ahem… Oskar Blues, anyone?) I find that it’s difficult to make pizza terrible. Ma’s Pizzeria falls somewhere in the middle of «terrible» and«fantastic,» I guess mediocre is the word I am searching for. They don’t have anything too fancy, which is fine, but what they do have is usually drenched in pools of grease and swimming in oil. It’s not bad pizza, it’s just difficult to tell with all that grease dripping down your arms. In addition, the service is also mediocre at best. The waitresses usually seem distracted and unwilling to give out too much information, and for a place that serves up pizza by the slice, it seems takes forever. Unless you are going to enjoy the beer and watch a game, I suggest you walk across the street to Oskar Blues for a superior dining experience.

Considering the size of Lyons, Ma’s makes a pretty decent pie. Food: I love the menu here, not so much the execution. My friend and I came here on our way to Rocky Mountain National Park and needed some calorie packed food for the impending walking. We ordered a large artichoke, pinenut, tomato, and pesto pizza with olives on one half( ). Sounds scrumptious, right? When it came out it looked huge and covered a decent portion of the table. However, we picked up the slices and realized they were paper thin. Though we had plenty of leftovers, we managed to eat the rest of the pizza through the course of the day and were starving at the last piece. Also, the crust was fairly bland. Aside from these issues, the pizza satisfied us for the moment. Perhaps as compensation, we also got a side salad with a raspberry vinaigrette( ) that was much bigger than anticipated. Atmosphere: Ma must be a sports fan because there are jerseys and other sorts of paraphernalia stapled to much of the otherwise empty wall space. They also have several flatscreen tvs tuned to various games. I’d call the restaurant sort of industrial chic with a sports fetish. Service: Ok… so this appears to be a trend in the less populated areas of Colorado, but what with the child labor? Our waitress was like 14 or something. Is that legal? Also, it took FOREVER to get our food. I realize it’s probably because the cooks are also probably teenagers, but when you’re hungry you just don’t care. Synopsis: Eating here was generally a pleasant experience, but the anorexic pizza is a turnoff.

This pizza is suprisibgly delicious. Thin crust, good sauce(both the pesto and the marinara), and lots of toppings. I hate when pizza joints skimp on the toppings, and here, they don’t. For a treat, try The Bear pie: olives, spinach, pine nots, sun dried tomatoes, artichokes, pesto. So good. It is a bit pricey, but as I said, they don’t skimp so it’s worth it. Also, they have recently expanded and now have a spots bar.
