Simple the best breakfast in the area. Great food, reasonably priced and excellent service. You must have the famous fried potatoes!

The cook was very friendly and the food was very good I’ll give them that. However the portions were a bit small. Refills are extra The service was slow and it’s cash only. the waitress never came back to check on us to see if we would require anything else.

Best American fries around. Place is great. Only downside is it is small and you can expect a wait on weekends-especially after chuches let out. Great place. Only open for breakfast and lunch. Close at 2:00pm.

Best service I’ve had in a decade. The cook is an old Paratrooper who served in the 82nd Airborne back in 51 – 53. Great conversations with a fellow jumper. The food… massive omelet and plate of real potatoes for under 7 bucks. My only regret is that I didn’t discover this place sooner. Good people, good food, great prices. Well worth my money.

Food is good can’t complain. Food is good can’t complain. But we don’t go here for the food we go for the atmosphere. Love the fact that the owner cooks at the grill and talk to you while doing so bring back that old school diner feel

Good service, food is fairly good. Unfortunately they have raised they’re prices, comparable with other restaurants near by. A couple years ago I paid $ 3.75 for my breakfast, now it’s $ 4.75…

Cheap, no frills diner with a cool bar right in front of the grills. Skillet was great as well as the service

Best hole in the wall breakfast joint in Rockford. Guy at the grill greets you when you walk in. This defines mom and pop places. If you want an old school breakfast, check this place out.

Cozy little spot with great food, a definite must stop in spot. 4 star because something was changed in my Biscuits n Gravy, but it still good better than most. The staff is very friendly which is a nice change, I was so use to rudeness that the first time I stopped in, their kindness seemed corny… but now I’ve learned this is how others should be. A nice and loud«Hi, Welcome… have a seat anywhere you’d like» awaits for you. Once they get to know you it would be more friendly a nice«Good Morning… your name… what can I make for you today? «I love this place. A lot of points were lost because i had never realized you will not get served in order you arrive but as to how many are in your party. I stood up in middle of diner while parties of 3&4 after me were being seated. When i sat on one of the open tables i was asked to get up and wait for a seat to open up at the bar. If you come in with a party this is still a good place to eat… but NEVERGOINBYYOURSELF.* i left up my initial comment the bottom portion was edited 6÷29÷14

Watch out for the extras. Example. order number 5 with potatoes($$ 4.70) and add onions. green pepper,(about one tablespoon each), american cheese to the potatoes, and English muffin instead of white or wheat toast, the price is now $ 7.00.

The Potato Shak is a simple diner full of nice people and good food. You’re not going to find gourmet fare, but what you will find is a well-prepared, straight forward breakfast. I have yet to try the biscuits and gravy which is what sets good diners apart from average diners, so when I do, I’ll post an update. Minus 1 star because they do not accept credit cards. In today’s society it’s almost inconceivable that a place doesn’t take plastic. Go ahead and add .25 cents to my bill or whatever to cover the fees.

After years driving by and thinking«hmm…I need to check out the Shak», I finally made it, only find that it doesn’t live up to the hype. I ordered the«Shak Skillet», which was served on a plate, not one of those little skillets. No big deal, as long as it tastes good, right? Let’s just say I was less than impressed. With a name like«Potato Shak», I certainly wasn’t expecting a gourmet meal, but I had at least hoped for good fried potatoes. They weren’t bad, but they weren’t that good. The bacon wasn’t quite cooked enough either. I love breakfast, but I didn’t finish my meal — the taste didn’t justify the calories. On a positive note, the server was very friendly.

This is the best breakfast spot in town. The food is great, you get large portions and the price is low. Pete the owner is very friendly and says hi and goodbye to everyone that walks through the door. I bet he know 95% of his customers by name. If you go, make sure to order the fried potatoes and take cash, they do not except cards. Plan on waiting for a table on the weekends.

Great family place to grab a low cost breakfast. Excellent fried potatoes, and I would recommend getting them with the peppers and onions. Standard breakfast fare is very good, but nothing super creative. Basic good grill food with friendly service. Always expect a hello from owner/cook from behind the counter which reminds me of a family Japanese yakitoru joint. My only complaint is the quality of the coffee, standard Maxwell-like swill. If they only served Boston Stoker Celebes!

Just went here last week while I was in town for my monthly Rockford visit. Of course, I got the biscuits and gravy. I wasn’t so thrilled. The gravy was very good, but the biscuit? I’ve been to many parts of the South that could bag a better biscuit. I did almost lick my plate b/c of the gravy, but the biscuits broke my heart. I was yearning for more.
