Probably my favorite restaurant in Louisville. The food is great — especially the strip steak, which you can ask to be cut any thickness you want. Their mac’n cheese is out of this world. I have literally gone here on multiple occasions and order mac’n cheese with a side of vegetables, and that’s it! Their cesar salad is great — 2nd in Louisville only to Vincenzo’s. I’d recommend staying away from crab cakes, but other than that, everything is always good. Décor is traditional and dimly lit. Makes for a nice romantic evening. Can dress casual, but dressing up is not out-of-place. Prices are moderately high, but very much worth the money. Food is much better and much less expensive than most other high-dollar restaurants downtown(Read: RiVue, 8up) Just seems to be a great combination of everything you could want — quality, ambience, value, customer service, etc.

The carrot cake is a must! One of the best steaks I have had in a long time. Great atmosphere and great service.

I’ve only eaten here once, great steak restaurant! Service was awesome and it was very beautiful inside. A little too expensive when comparing to steak places that are half the price. Worth a try if you’ve never had it. I will probably go back.

Exellence on every aspect. The service was fast and friendly, the food was delicious, and the atmosphere was calming(the free-form jazz was a nice touch). I ordered the prime rib, and it was cooked perfectly; plus, it wasn’t fatty. Be sure to get the mac n cheese and the carrot cake(it’s served hot and it was on the house because it was our first time there).

went there for late lunch on Sunday and we were told that they were only serving brunch items. we placed our order for brunch and also ordered queso for an appetizer. At 3:10 our server came to tell us that she forgot to put in our branch order and since was now after 3PM we would need to order from the other regular menu. we then had to place another order and wait longer for that to be prepared. pitiful. management was no where in sight.

Is J. Alexander’s now called Redland’s Grill? Either way, it will always be J. Alexander’s to me, so that’s how I’ll reference it. J.Alexander’s has been a longtime favorite chain of mine. The food is always fresh and delicious and the service is always impeccable. I’ve never had a bad meal from here, with my favorite dish being the rattlesnake pasta. Chicken, peppers, onion, and pasta tossed in a slightly spicy, creamy, buttery sauce. It’s heavenly. Other favorites include: the spinach queso, Alex salad, the cheeseburger, and the CARROTCAKE! Oh my, that carrot cake is out of this world. I’m usually not one to order dessert at a restaurant, nor am I usually a fan of carrot cake, but I always get the carrot cake at J’s. It’s warm and rich and glazed with the most amazing icing. Just look at my picture and you’ll understand. The service here is another strength. It’s always excellent. Your glass will never be close to empty. Dishes are removed from the table immediately when you’re finished. The servers even clean the table periodically to remove crumbs, dripped dressing, water marks, etc. Servers are efficient without being overbearing. One downside: it is a little pricey. J’s is definitely on another level than most chains, but still, some of their menu seems overpriced… $ 10 for a house salad? You’re not Jeff Ruby’s. On the other hand, some of the items are priced correctly. For example, $ 15 for a large portion of pasta. The portions at J’s are large, and the food is excellent, so for the most part, the prices are worth it. This one is a tough one to rate. It’s closer to 4.5 stars in my opinion. The food is delicious and I would be happy eating here anytime. It’s a chain that I can rely on when visiting other cities. I’m definitely a fan. But is it «Woohoo! As good as it gets!» in Louisville? No.

Went to celebrate a dear friend’s birthday… I was late getting there… but I was really surprised! Soon as I sat down a very nice waitress took my drink order, gave me time to look over the menu… when I made my order ten minutes later my order arrived! My old fashioned cheeseburger looked like one of those gourmet burgers on Food Network! Delicious but my 5 stars for top notch service… attentive but not pushy! Will go back!!!

Very good food. I ordered the rotisserie chicken with smashed potatoes. The chicken was juicy and delicious. The potatoes were real potatoes and very tasty. Server was excellent and kept refill of beverage coming with out being told. Large portions of food also so will be taking some home with you.

The place is pretty good nothing special, service was good but I thought almost rushed. Little pet pev with me is being served the main course while you are still eating the appetizer. I had a steak that’s was ok nothing really great the place is very clean. Just one of those places kinda like the typical chain restaurants ok but nothing you look forward to

Definitely my favorite place to eat in Louisville! The quality of food for the price you actually pay is legit! Love their desserts and chicken! A must try if you’re in the area!

Food is always perfect and brought out in a timely manner. Appetizers are all good so it’s hard to pick. You may think devil eggs what’s the big deal but believe me you have to try. The chips and queso is so great. The carrot cake is unbelievable and I don’t like carrot cake at less I didn’t before.

This place was great! I am a big mac and cheese lover and they did not disappoint, it was one of the best I’ve ever had. I ordered the club sandwich and there was so much meat on it, it was very good. My friend ordered the Rattlesnake pasta and it was delicious! Their portions are huge. We happened to go on Sunday during brunch and they offer $ 1 mimosas and bloody mary’s, not worth it. The mimosa hardly had any champagne, but what do you expect for a $ 1, and the orange juice had a lot of pulp in it and just didn’t taste right. The bloody mary was spicy but had chunks of something in it, it wasn’t that good either. Other than the drinks, this place was great! I would definitely recommend it.

J Alexander’s gets a solid 3 stars from me. I came here with some colleagues. We started with drinks in the bar. It was a pleasant experience, but service behind the bar was struggling some. Once our entire party arrived we were seated right away which was wonderful. Once seated, the drinks were very slow to come. I’m not sure what was happening… The food was good;everyone seemed to enjoy it. Maybe it’s just me, but the portions are way too large and quite overwhelming. It’s good food for a chain, but it’s not going to be my go-to in Louisville. I’ll definitely be back for drinks and apps, but not my favorite dinner spot.

Our visit 2015 Easter Sunday: We ordered from the BRUNCH menu that is not on the website. SERVICE: BEYONDPERFECT /OUTSTANDING!!! Best thing about this visit. Refills were brought ahead of time. Waitress would not let any crumb or water drops be left on the table as we dined. While so many restaurants close for Easter, dedication of all the employees there to serve the public today was over-the-top impressive!
$ 2.95 Iced Tea: UNBEATABLE flavor. $ 18 Prime Rib«French Dip» Sandwich: FLAVORLESS, when not even overcooked. NEVERAGAIN. Matchstick fries did have a little flavor, cute presentation. $ 15 Cypress Salad: Yummy grilled chicken. But overdrenched in dressing, so recommend ordering the dressing on the side. Homemade croutons: nice sweet touch. $ 15 Eggs Benedict with Filet Mignon: Flavorful smoky steak, albeit only ¼ inch thick by about 2 inches diameter. Hollandaise sauce & Homemade English muffins: unremarkable. Waitress did not ask how I wanted the eggs cooked; mine came over easy. Breakfast potatoes: homemade and quite good. $ 7 Carrot Cake: Not the $ 5 price on the web site; learned only after getting bill. Scrumptious, about 4″ square size. Really moist(with butter?) nutty, homemade cream sauce not too sweet. Best ever.. OVERALL: Classy Venue/Atmosphere. World-class service. Spotty food quality. NOT the reputed big serving sizes.

Even busy, this place doesn’t fail to disappoint. The service is generally good and I’ve never had an obscenely long wait time to be seated. They do a great job of keeping people moving. This isn’t why I’m writing this review however. THISPLACEHASTHEBEATAHITUNAFILLETSANDSMASHEDPOTATOSINLOUISVILLE. There, I said it. It’s been difficult. I’ve ordered ahi tuna lots of places: nowhere stacks up to J. Alexander’s. It helps that their tea is fabulous too. It’s a bit on the pricier side(compare it to somewhere like the Cheesecake Factory) but I think a million times more worth it than the previously mentioned establishment. It’s definitely worth it. The food never disappoints and is always cooked to perfection. It’s a favorite amongst my whole family.

First off, LETMECLARIFY, I RARELY eat at establishments so close to the interstate AND if I’m really trying to be honest, CHAINRESTAURANTS are a total faux pas in my book. Secondly, I just need to say that if I am a foodie and typically I WILL cook high level gourmet for REFINEDPALATESONLY! So when I’m not indulging my hobby by visiting wineries, wine tastings, breweries, beer samplings, food science events, new restaurant openings, etc… its even more rare I «slum-it» on some Bozo Carrabas-type joint… BUTLETMEBETHEFIRSTTOTELLYOUHANDSDOWNNODOUBTBESTSTEAKINLOUISVILLE’S OXMOORMALLDISTRICT. Don’t believe me? Try for yourself, you might be surprised… Only complaints: did not see a Barista on-duty(sorry, but you coulda had a 5 star J.A.) ~ciao

It may be me but the food at this restaurant keeps going downhill. The chefs need to taste what they are serving as everything tastes over salted. As stated in my last review the orzo salad is so salty it is almost inedible. The spinach queso, which is a family favorite, was accompanied by over salted tortilla chips. The Scottish Salmon was cooked well but lacked the depth of a wild caught salmon. The burger was good as usual. Overall, service was good but the food was mediocre and not up to usual standards. Come on J. Alexander… you were my go to restaurant tell your chefs to lighten up on the salt and taste their food before serving. Maybe over the years your recipes have been tweaked for the worse? Get back to the menu of old!

The food and wine was amazing as usual. My problem was that it’s one of the few, if not the only, J Alexanders that does not take reservations. Also, 4 of our party of 5 arrived early and planned to have appetizers and drinks until the 5th arrived. They refused to seat us until the final person arrived. I understand there may be a need for this policy at busy restaurants, but on a Tuesday night when HALF of the tables are empty it only serves to piss people off.

Two words… Prime Rib. When ever I am in town this is where I go for my favorite cut. Great atmosphere, great food. You can’t go wrong here.

First time and it was great. Calamari appetizer was good. I got fish tacos and my fiancé got the filet. She substituted the potatoes for the Mac n Cheese. Great call as the Mac n Cheese is awesome! Seriously, get it!
