J Gumbos

So good and so much delicious Cajun food! The chicken red hot and drunken chicken are amazing! I always have leftovers!

J Gumbos always hits the spot. There aren’t too many places you can go and quickly get large servings of flavor packed Cajun marinated meals. Though I’ve tried several things on the menu and love it all, like many others, my favorites are The Drunken Chicken and the very spicy but oh so good Voodoo Chicken. This is cajun marinated/​spiced chicken on a bed of rice with a side of garlic bread. As much as you will want to finish this in one serving, you probably won’t be able to. The meal is large enough to be two meals or maybe even three for some. You can even get these favorite options as wraps.
This location has a decent sized dining room with a few tvs. Usually sports are playing on these though I’ve seen channels like Animal Planet (could be another channel just showing animals) on there. Though the attempt to make you feel as if you’re in New Orleans Mardi Gras borders on cheesy, the décor isn’t overpowering enough to stop you from just enjoying a fast casual dining room.
This place works if you have children as well. My 9 year likes coming here and getting cheesy rice or just a nice bowl of mac n cheese with some fruit snacks.
Perhaps the only issue I’ve had is that at times the thickness of the of the sauce on the chicken seems heavier, runnier, thicker than other times. It’s always great tasting but the inconsistency brings the star rating down just a tad bit. Expect to see me continue to check in to this J Gumbos though!

There food is always great taste the same every time but the customer service was great when I told the women behind the counter my child was sick she gave me a bag of gold fish even tho its a small act it’s an extremely kind one at tht I’ll definitely be back

Love this little hidden gem in this area. Food never bad, always great service and super quick on any carry out order.
We both had the Bourbon & Drunken Chicken (added shrimp), and it was a carry out.
Order was all together within minutes, they always give large portions and could be a second meal the next day.

A fast casual cajun chain. J Gumbos is a great option for lunch or a quick dinner. The food is good, the portions are huge, and the prices are cheap. Each dish is basically a gumbo of some marinated meat served over a bed of white rice. My favorite is the Drunken Chicken, though I admit I haven’t tried much else. Every J Gumbos I’ve visited has been quick and clean.

Bourbon Chicken is my favorite! The Bread is good too! The owner is very friendly! Place is clean and quiet!

This place had a fun atmosphere, serves alcohol and makes great Cajun food. What more can you ask for?! The Bourbon Chicken and rice dish is one of my favorites. Tender, juicy chicken, with a sweet and slightly spicy bourbon flavor, makes it melt in your mouth! The étouffée is also wonderful, with more kick than the bourbon chicken dish. And, don’t forget to leave room for dessert, because that bread pudding is just as good as main course!
The service here is speedy, without being rude and they do to-​go orders, for your lunch rush needs!
Keep them in mind, if you are ever near Hurstborne!

Great Cajun food and great prices. My favorite is the Drunken chicken which is savory chicken marinated in spices and beer. So tasty. The portions are huge and big enough to split. Service was fast and friendly. I ordered crawfish étouffée which was flavor packed and came with a side of cornbread. Lunch was under $ 8. Plenty of hot sauces to spice meals up to your taste. Place was very clean and I will be back.

We used this place to cater a dinner for volunteers and they did such a great job! The food arrived promptly with extra serving supplies. I would never have thought of using J Gumbo’s to cater but I’m so glad someone else did. The volunteers got a kick out of having something different from what you’d expect and I think it made them feel appreciated, which was the whole goal. We chose Bumblebee stew and the Drunkin chicken. Both were a hit, along with the generous servings of corn bread. It was a wonderful meal.

I visited this J Gumbo’s because I was going to a movie at the Carmike Stonybrook 20 theater across the street. I wanted to eat, wasn’t in the mood for fast food, and needed to be in and out within 30 minutes. J Gumbos filled the bill.
J Gumbo’s is an interesting concept. They serve a variety of Cajun style stews, jambalayas and gumbos. For $ 7.25, you get a big bowl of rice topped with the stew or your choice and accompanied by a toasted, buttered roll. Everything I have had at J Gumbo’s is delicious, and while I haven’t seen the nutritional data, the meal feels more healthful than «fast food.» Because J Gumbo’s is basically serving stews, your meal is ready in minutes: it’s actually much faster than many «fast food» places.
On this visit, I ordered Drunken Chicken (recommended by Kat, the fast, friendly employee who took my order. My dinner was delicious. It had a bit of a spicy bite, which I loved, but wasn’t spicy enough to be intimidating.
A bonus was that this J Gumbo’s serves freshly brewed Lusianne iced tea. It’s the perfect accompaniment for a bowl of gumbo. If you’re not as much of a tea fanatic as I am, J Gumbo’s also offers soft drinks as well as a nice variety of bottled beer.
I definitely will visit J Gumbo’s again and again!

I’m a fan of J Gumbo’s and have eaten at different locations in the city but this is easily one of the best locations — great tasting food, good service and big dining area. It’s also across from the Rave movie theater so it’s a good place to grab a quick, inexpensive bite before or after a movie. The Drunken Chicken, Voodoo Chicken, Bourbon Chicken and Chicken Red Hot are all superb!

I typically like to go to this particular J Gumbos if I’m on this side of town. It’s nicely decorated with NOLA themes.
Onto the food, the food is good and filling; I typically take home half of my meal. I usually get 2 entrees in 1, ½ drunken chicken and ½ voodoo chicken — which offers a kick to your taste buds. I also love they have the calories clearly stated on the menu, which is always helpful when you’re watching what you eat!

Love it. I always get the Black and Blue dip and anything with crawfish. I would give 5 stars, but the service can be an issue at times.
I do like it though. will go back again and again.

This is my favorite J. Gumbo’s in town.
The food is like a cajun Thanksgiving. It’s that comforting and delicious. I love the Drunken Chicken. The best is the yummy buttered, seasoned, and toasted bread they give you with your meal – perfect for scooping up a bit of chicken. Mmmm-​Mmm!
The staff seem like they are family. They are easy-​going, and know us pretty well, one time they rescued a doll that my daughter left there– returning it to the next time we stopped in.
They have big screen HD-TV’s, a bright and cheery dining space, and tend to go the extra mile for Holiday Decorations.
I always get a root beer with my food, and the syrup is perfectly balanced with always carbonated soda.
J. Gumbo’s is delicious. It’s easily one of my favorite places to eat in Louisville.
