May have had the best Veggie pizza of all time today. It’s kinda square because so is the box! Mushrooms, peppers. olives, onions. Other options avail. Crust was super crispy!

At the risk of ruining a best-kept secret through overexposure, Danny Mac’s turns out a fine pizza that stacks up among the best in town, priced to compete with the chains. First things first: they’re actually located at 1567 South Shelby Street, in the Germantown Amvets post. To get your pizza, you need to visit the post(Danny Mac’s doesn’t deliver), walk a small gauntlet of the regulars at the Amvets bar to the pizza counter, and pick up your pizza, made square and filling the 12″ pizza box, and generously covered with cheese and toppings. As of this writing, the longstanding special is three toppings for $ 11, competitive with — and tastier than — the chains. Their regular pizza feeds four pretty easily, but if you need more, the breadsticks are a butter-soaked guilty pleasure(and I do mean guilty — your waistline won’t forgive you quickly). They also have typical pizza restaurant variants like subs, calzones and spaghetti, but the pizza is the draw. No fifth star? Mostly because I wish they were a mile closer, but also because I’m selfish and don’t want 20 people lined up out the door when I come to get my pizza.
