As an engineer, the first thing that caught my attention about Bernoulli’s was the name. I could not for the life of me figure out how the principle related to ice cream. Maybe the machine uses forced liquid to cool the ice cream? Maybe a nod to the difference in pressure that ushers in a snowstorm? However, after learning Bryan, one of the owners, sold his airplane to start the company, I am pretty sure I know the secret of the name. After enjoying samples of their ice cream at events and stores, I knew I needed to track it down to its source. I won’t lie and say they’re easy to find, but if you have gps handy, you can find the shop on any Tuesday between 12 – 6. They have a large freezer full of 20+ flavors, as well as a couple of ice cream sandwiches. I really enjoyed visiting the shop and learning about how the ice cream is made and Allyson and Bryan’s business model. While they are trying to get their ice cream into groceries and restaurants, they also make lots of custom flavors for events and parties. They show up at a lot of local festivals with themed ice cream treats. They are very supportive of other local ice cream makers and are trying to make a niche with good versions of common flavors. They believe in supporting local businesses and source many of their ingredients from nearby farmers markets. I was lucky that I caught them at a time they could let me try some samples, because YUM. It was definitely worth breaking my diet, especially for their banana pudding. The ice cream is soft and creamy and they only use real banana, so the flavor is authentic. I am pretty sure they soak their vanilla wafer cookies in browned butter and bake them to give them a nice crunch, even after sitting in the ice cream base. The only criticism I can think of(believe me, I really had to stretch) is that their sorbet is a bit stiff when it’s first out of the freezer. But if waiting five minutes to scoop my sorbet is wrong, I don’t want to be right. And the flavor is fantastic; I can’t wait to make a wine float out of the mulled apple cider sorbet. Be sure to check these guys out! They are doing some really cool things(get it, get it?!) with ice cream and I can’t wait to find an excuse to have them whip up something custom for me!

It’s hard to *not* be happy after eating ice cream, even if it’s the«ice cream-like product» you can get for a buck or two at the supermarket. Every ice cream experience pretty much starts at four stars for me. But at the same time, it’s hard to stand out. So much of it is just so good. So the fact that Bernoulli’s gets five stars should help show just how fantastic this ice cream is. I picked up a couple of pints at Bernoulli’s «Freezer Raid» that they host every Tuesday at their Jeffersontown office/production facility. A small freezer is in the little lobby, and on Tuesdays you can look through the pints they have available. Plus they have some on hand that you can sample as well. Their selection this week included regulars as well as limited edition flavors. And that’s one thing I really like about Bernoulli’s — their creativity. These ice cream makers are always coming up with fun flavors, like Pumpkin Apple Cider Sorbet and Banana Pudding. Allysan, one of the owners, told me how they even made an ice cream once with ramps, a wild onion, for a ramp festival. At first, «gross» came to mind, but then she told me what they put in the ice cream with ramps, and it didn’t sound too bad. It even won the festival prize for best ramp dish. On my most recent visit, though, I opted for Peppermint Bark and Cappuccino Crunch. Allysan urged me to get Cappuccino Crunch, and I’m so glad she did. This is the best coffee ice cream I’ve ever had. Most coffee ice cream is too heavy on the coffee for my liking, but this had just enough without going overboard. Plus it’s made with local Argo Son’s Coffee, and the crunch stayed crunchy. I’m smitten. Peppermint ice cream is also a fave flavor, so it was hard to go wrong with it. Bernoulli’s is available at many local groceries — including ValuMarket and Fond — so I happily won’t have to wait for Tuesdays to stock up.
