It’s been a while since I last came. The 1st time I came I didn’t have a good impression of this place. Heard that they’ve reopened and decided to give it a 2nd try and here’s my thoughts. Food presentation was good, it looks like fine dining, very neatly arranged and presented. Came for the happy hour(8pm-close), with sushi and appetizers at $ 4, it’s a great deal for the quality of food that was served.

I would not say the service is bad or the food is not good– the price is rather high given that the taste or sushi quality has nothing spectacular about it. There are many cheaper but tastier options in the same west la /sawtelle neighborhood. Tge portions are also small so my husband I went across the street to go Tokyo fastfood.

Glad to hear my favorite sushi place is open again! I have been coming to this place for about 15 years. I took many of my friends there and all of them liked it as much as I do. Every time someone tells me about another sushi place that I should try I am usually disappointed. Their salmon is my favorite in all versions. And I love their sashimi. Overall, prices are still lower than anywhere else and portions are a bit bigger. Can’t wait to go there again after hearing they are open again !

Uzen is open again! They were closed for about nine months after a van ran into their lobby. Sooooo happy they’re open again. Best sushi happy hour on the west side. Tried three or four other places while they were closed and none of them even come close.

Finally Re-Opened! Everyone was very happy that they are back in business, but it was extremely busy during the Late Night Happy Hour(Starts at 8!). Most of the items were delicious, just one or two were a miss. I’d like to see a larger nigiri & hand roll selection, as that’s what I came for. But you can’t beat $ 3 Sake!

After 9 mths of being closed they are finally open again! Monday the 4th was their grand opening and of course I wasn’t going to miss it. It looks very nice inside new paint and flooring and some new art. Looks fresh and clean and of course very homey and welcoming. The late night happy hour is still in effect from 8pm to close and everyone last night came for that. Wait at 8pm was over and hour but worth it. Same friendly staff working there. They upped price on sushi and apps on HH menu from $ 3.75 to $ 4 and on sake and wine from $ 2 to $ 3 but all reasonable price increases. Albacore sushi is still my favorite and was absolutely delicious. Crunchy spicy tuna and dragon rolls are also favorites. Although there was a little wait it all was very much the same. Glad they are finally open again and looking forward to many more visits at my neighborhood spot!

Good news! It is open again and food is decent… Bad news… Had the worst service tonight! Waited like 20 minutes after my companion received her food for my roll choice… Then when I ask for update she tells me I already ate it!!! With attitude like I was trying to be shifty!!! Then after I explain what I ordered and she didn’t even realize what the item is called on the menu.:. She realized she made a mistake… Apologized! Awesome… Let’s move on. OK… 15 minutes later… Still no food… wasn’t even that busy… She couldn’t have asked for a rush??? And she didn’t even check if I needed anything during this time. I’m not even going to go on about her total disregard for our existence there. I was excited about going back now that they are open… I might not go back for a while. I was watching the other servers… Ours was horror the rest were attentive… Very disappointed!!! Sit at the bar… The sushi chefs are good service . The lady with the blond bottoms is good… The tall lady is good… Ours… Was dismissive and rude.

After a long wait(9 months of remodeling) I’m happy to report that U-Zen is back in business! Their official re-opening day is Monday, Jan 4th, 2016. However, I was very fortunate to make a reservation for their soft opening on Sat, Jan 2nd, 2016. Arrived on time with my SO and was first greeted by all of the same faces as before — glad to report that most of the staff are still the same — then we were promptly sat at the sushi bar. We wanted celebrate their re-opening so we came mentally prepared for an omakase night. When sushi chef Toshi asked what we wanted, we told him omakase and gave him a couple items which we didn’t want as well as a couple items we really liked. The entire meal and presentation was amazing. All of the 13 fishes we tried were really fresh and had amazing flavor. Chef Toshi was entertaining and very accommodating. I highly recommend sitting with him if you ever want to try omakase here. Their daily fish specials change throughout the year as they fly in different types of fishes from Japan, but they have most of the common fishes on hand at all times. Here is what we received in our omakase dinner: Baby Red Snapper sashimi — body was later deep fried and served Flounder Fin sashimi Ami Ebi — 1 head was deep fried, the other was served in miso soup. Both were delish but if I had to choose 1, I would go with the miso soup Hamachi King Mackerel Toro Spanish Aji Spanish Sea Trout Albacore Salmon Kampachi Japanese Red Uni Hokkaido Scallops U-Zen’s happy hour menu still exists! But note that the prices did increase from $ 3.75 a dish to $ 4.00. Still a fair price for the quality of the fish that you receive. I can’t wait for my next visit!

I have been coming to see Andy and Masa now for over 2 years. I love sushi and I have explored many other sushi spots around the West LA/SM area and I always find myself coming back to U-Zen for many reasons. 1) The food is amazing. I always always get the Shishito Peppers, Albacore sushi, Freshwater Eel, Blue Crab Handroll, Black Cod, Salmon sushi, among other really good dishes. I will say that due to the nature of the type of food, some nights, the fish isn’t as fresh as other nights but it doesn’t affect my decision to go any night of the week. 2) Andy is amazingly nice and always has a positive outlook on things. The spot always has a nice ambiance and I see the same people time and time again. There is a huge following that loves coming here to eat. I would much rather come to a local father-son spot and support them rather than a huge corporation. 3) I can go on a date and spend $ 80 and leave fully stocked on fish in my belly. Happy hour starts at 8. 4) Sit at the sushi bar, you will be taken care of very well. The staff is incredibly nice and quick. 5) You aren’t going to find 75 different rolls with a bunch of stuff in them, just great food. Again, I love this place and eat sushi all the time, if you can find me a better overall sushi spot that gives me more than this place… let me know!!!

3÷28÷15: They will be closed because someone crashed their car into the front door. Review:It is decent sushi, reasonable and not often crowded. Good cooked foods, some comfort food. They happy hours is good but the food on it is decent. The specials of the day is where the food excels in taste and flavors.

I don’t understand why this place gets such high review. My authentic Japanese taste buds do not agree with 4 star score. I work in Torrance area so I am a spoiled brat when it comes to Japanese food, I don’t think restaurant like this would last long in Torrance. Everything from Sashimi to fried food, my assessment was it could be so much better. Will I come back? Probably not.

$ 3.50 basic sushi rolls from 800pm — close every night $ 2.50 wine and beer from 800 pm — close every night The above factors are highly convenient if you feel like getting some basic, cheap sushi in WLA in a restaurant environment. Basic meaning california, spicy tuna, spicy albacore rolls, salmon sushi, etc(no special rolls on happy hour). It takes me like 4 happy hour items or $ 14 to fill up + add on a beer or two, and you are looking at around $ 20 roughly + tax and tip aka $ 25 bucks for one person to get your HH fill on. Is that still cheap? I don’t know, I always ask myself how I ended up spending $ 50(for two people) on what I thought was a cheap happy hour deal!

U-Zen? Me-Zen. That’s right my friends. This place is like a second home for me. I mean it, not in a small way, but in a big way. I walk in and am whirled into sea of happiness(albeit the sea contains dead fish, but that’s okay, ya know? LOL). Well hey, at least the fish are fresher than your girl on a Friday night… Ohhhhh!!! Okay now, seriously, no more jokes. Just straight up. U-Zen has excellent sushi, and an excellent happy hour that occurs after 8PM daily. The fish cuts are more generous than the GOP’s military budget(woah!). Regarding sushi, the salmon is hearty, moist and buttery, it will comfort you; the albacore is tender, fresh, and coated lightly in scallions, it will excite you; the shrimp is so blatantly fresh and sweet you might have to hold your breath. Thanks to everyone for your reads and to U-Zen for continuing to provide great service and a cost that is amenable to all budgets. I applaud you and will return to this restaurant again and again without fail.

How on earth does this place get 4 stars? My wife and I came in expecting to enjoy a nice sushi dinner — we had been told that the happy hour was very popular, and we are huge sushi fans. We left, quite frankly, nauseated and disappointed. The sushi was too fishy, not flavorful enough, and remarkably tough when it should have been tender. The blue crab handroll(which we love at Zo and Sugarfish) had an off flavor and came in a yellow wrapping of some sort — decidedly not nori. And I learned for the first time tonight that it actually is possible to make a bad spicy tuna roll. I return to the question above: why does this restaurant have 4 Unilocal stars? It might be the happy hour pricing, which does provide a significant discount to their standard pricing. But inedible food at 50% off is still inedible(not to mention infinitely overpriced). Or – at least in some instances — the 4-star rating may say more about the reviewers than the restaurant. Anecdotally, I can share that the woman at the next table tonight was(I kid you not) telling a story about how she has started taking the same flea and tick medication that she gives her cats; she even noted that she didn’t mind the flavor. Well, there you go. I am sure she enjoyed the sushi too. I will admit that the cooked appetizers were significantly better than the sushi, and that the wait staff were friendly. But a sushi restaurant stands or falls on the quality of its sushi, which sadly is miserable here.

U-Zen is a very traditional sushi bar, which I liked — no cream cheese stuffed rollsi, no crazy sauces — just straight up sushi. Servers stand by and greet you as you walk in and again as you exit. They have those little moist towelettes to clean your hands before eating, and they’re fast to clear your plates when you’re done. It’s fast, efficient, and clean. The salmon and albacore sashimi are fresh and the sushi rice here is well-seasoned. You get a bowl of edamame before, a bite of fruit as a palate cleanser after. The whole restaurant is cute and quaint. I love the surge of innovative and novel restaurant concepts we’re seeing nowadays. But sometimes, you just want to go back to what’s traditional. For those times, I’m glad U-Zen is around.

We were just looking for a nice restaurant to eat at that was in proximity of UCLA’s campus. We found this place on Unilocal and immediately found parking in the front. The dinner menu is pretty pricey, but we thought the food tasted delicious and authentic! Some observations: The kuikiri set in our opinion is much more worth the price than the dinner combo. You get 3 choices of protein and each comes on top of a small bowl of rice. It allowed me to have a little bit of everything I wanted to eat! But it took longer to come out than the rest of the food. I think those of us that ordered the kuikiri as opposed to the dinner set/combo waited at least 10 min. This put the other guests in an awkward place as to whether or not they should eat without us or wait. We told them to go ahead. They also brought our salads out at the same time as the dishes, which was different than with the dinner set/combo, whose salad came out as appetizers. We would’ve much preferred that. The salmon sashimi was a little warm. It wasn’t bad but that always weirds me out. The unagi was on point! It was a little bit burnt but I enjoy that much more than eel that hasn’t been caramelized enough. The beef teriyaki was cooked through a perfect medium. Often times, Ifeel like the beef teriyaki is so thin that it comes out dry and overdone. This was delicious! Overall, this place has its kinks, but it’s actually a really great restaurant. This probably won’t be our last time here.

U-Zen is very popular for their Late Night Happy Hour menu($ 3.50 for each item) and for good reason. On the menu you get a varied number of options such as albacore, Salmon, Shrimp for the main sushi options. Rolls include shrimp/avocado, albacore/avocado, spicy tuna and a veggie option. There’s also a number of sides like spicy chicken, dumplings, etc. Plus, the other side of the menu contains all kinds of drink specials. Overall the albacore was our favorite. A nice touch at the beginning and end of the meal were the complimentary edamame appetizer and the sliced fruit at the end. If you’re craving quick, good-quality sushi at a very agreeable price then U-Zen is for you. Think Sushi-Stop prices but a level higher in quality, ambiance, and authenticity. Tip 1: During Happy Hour, sitting at the bar ensures you’ll get seated as quick as possible and means the sushi comes straight from the chef’s hand to your plate.(This also means you can get the chef’s attention right away to order more sushi!) Tip 2: Happy hour is from 8pm to closing which is different than the listed 8:30pm in some older reviews.

Eaten here about 3 times. Quick walk from home. Solid choice for lunch or dinner. Casual dining. Never had to wait to be seated. Decent prices. Sushi is great, can’t go wrong with tonkatsu. If you’re in the area and looking for causal japanese dining and attentive service. I recommend U-Zen!
