I went to Soul Folks Café when it was on 714 Traction Avenue, Downtown L.A.(213) 613‑0381. At that time the term«Little Tokyo/Arts District» was barely used. What would be The Arts District was considered an edgy iffy place where only poor artists looking for a cheap studio & a place to crash would be the most respectable people to inhabit the area. Soul Folks Café was a dark, small store run by a nice, quiet, dignified lady. No crazy jazz or funk playing in the background when I went to eat there on a weekday afternoon. The food was the Southern version of Soul Food. It was good, but nothing that was exceptional to the point that I could recall some memorable dish. The feel of the place reminds me of going back to the late 1960’s to headshops & places selling beads, incense, tie dye clothes, bongs. It had a very serene yet counter-cultural feel which in those days meant you didn’t follow the conventions of staid middle class America. I tried calling the new phone number listed on Unilocal, which is the same as when it was located on Traction Avenue. All I got was a recording from the phone company saying that this phone number was presently not receiving any phone calls. Hope all is well & that the Café is on vacation or a hiatus, and is coming back to serve more Soul Food. I want to return again to sample more of their food & give a more accurate review of what I have eaten in 2014, and not in the mid 2000’s.
