This place has been here forever so let’s just start off by saying they’ve gotta be doing something right to still be open! They have a very wide variety of food including pizza, thrifty ice cream, sandwiches, burgers, even candy bars at the registers etc! I usually get a ½ philly cheesesteak combo because I will never be able to eat a full one as much as I’d love to haha! Great establishment that I hope will be open for years & years to come!

They take FOREVER!!! I was waiting for my veggie sub for 30 minutes. The sandwich was ok… kind of bland but not terrible. Apparently the Philly subs are really good according to friends I was with. For me though nothing makes me want to go back anytime soon :/

I was creeping on my friends through Swarm(an app you use to check into places), and saw a foodie check into this place. It was nearby so I wanted to check it out too. I got the Combo #2, which is a whole philly cheese steak sandwich with fries and a drink. I have a big appetite but could only finish half. I don’t think the fact that I ate all my fries affected anything, nope. But just so you know, when you order the cheese steak and they ask you if you want everything on it, you should probably read that list. I ended up with a mix of hot steak and cold lettuce/tomato/mayo, which was not what I was looking for. Still ate it and it was delicious!

This place is awesome and they do call ahead ordering which makes things way more convenient and you can never go wrong with the chicken teriyaki bowls

Great place. I got the Philly cheesesteak and it was delicious. Also, it’s not fancy, but they have a large seating area which is nice with a back-room area in the rear of the restaurant so there’s plenty of seating to go around. I can’t wait to come back and try the rest of their menu. Also, if I recall correctly, the sandwich was 8.49, but for 9.99 you can get a combo deal that includes fries AND a drink. I’m trying to eat somewhat healthier(«trying»), so I didn’t get the full combo, but that’s a really great deal.

UPDATE chicken teriyaki sub is AWESOME. Don’t order anything else there. :) I like their fries and the service is excellent. But the real money is in the perfectly balanced teriyaki sub with the yummy fresh bread.

Love this place. I pretty much always get the cheesesteak but the Western Burger is bomb too. Good service, polite, solid prices.

If I were in the area and craving a Philly sandwich, I’d definitely get it from here! Portions were a good size, hot and very tasty. It appears that they have repeat customers. They have a variety of food selections as well so maybe I’d try something different next time.

Not much to look at but what they lack in décor they more than make up for with their Philly cheese steak. No one is kidding about this, it is the best. I have been to Philly a couple of times, gotten the cheese steaks from the classic places as well as some random places and this cheese steak is number one.

I have been eating at the Submariner since the 70’s. Stop doing the math I was a kid and my mother worked nearby! Since I don’t live close I don’t get to eat here as much as I would like. But I do make a point to stop by every couple of years and the food is always as good as I remember it. Ordering Tip #1: Get the Pepper Steak sandwich it’s been their specialty since back in the day! Everyone agrees that the Philly Cheese Steak is awesome but all the food is great tasting and fresh here so you really can’t go wrong. The staff is friendly, the restaurant is clean enough and there is plenty of parking. Plus its location makes it a great place to stop after a day at Venice Beach. Ordering Tip #2: Pick the Potato Wedges over the fries; they are wide and thick so they hold up the big flavors of the sandwiches. As an added bonus you can see celebrities eating here! On our last visit we saw Tyler Labine getting a sandwich to go!

Mike and his family have been proudly serving the Westside for years and the quality and taste have stayed the same… delicious! For an experience, try the BLTE; crispy Bacon, fresh cut Lettuce, vine ripened Tomatoes and farm fresh Egg on a mayo-smeared toasted soft French roll — mouthwatering! But, IMHO the best item on the menu, and often overlooked is their pizza. Pizza dough is baked in their large pizza oven until the crust is crispy(not burnt to a crisp) with ample amounts of your choice of toppings(they do NOT skimp on toppings) and by far the best ooie-gooie mozzarella cheese and sweet, tomato-basil sauce to die for. THISISHOWPIZZA is suppose to be made… the old traditional style which none of the other chain pizza establishment can replicate. Mike and his family are friendly and courteous with that contagious smile on their faces which indicate their love for their place of Gastro-delight. Oh, and try their burgers… outstanding! We eat here at least 2 times a week… every week!

This sandwich place is great and the people who own the place are very nice and respectful. I have been going there for years and I should have wrote the review much earlier. The main thing I do order there is the Philly cheese steak sandwich with everything on it and it comes with seasoned french fries and a fountain drink. As another reviewer mentioned it does not come out in 2 min it take a little longer but hey everything come out hot and delicious and guaranteed to please and fill you up. The other item i normally order there is their Teriyaki chicken bawl very good as well. If i ever deviate from these 2 orders i will update my review but it is very hard ;) Just a quick note about the décor it is very dated however it is clean but not an ideal place to bring in a date. However I always place an order for pickup and the good thing is that all sandwiches come wrapped in aluminum so they will make it home still hot and the cheese still melted :) There is few spots to park behind the restaurant and the side street spaces unless you are coming right at lunch time there is always place to park there

Their Philly Cheese Steak is the bomb! That’s my «go to» sandwich. Although I’m trying new items every visit. Hopefully to find something equally as good. So far everything’s delicious. The only sad part is that they close early(8:00pm M-F, 7:00pm on Sat). Don’t ask about Sunday’s,…they’re CLOSED all day. :( Better plan your days when you want a Bomb-Ass sandwich!

Submariners is now a regular thing in our lives. We never eat there because the entire place has a slight grease sheen. But the food is so delicious. We just pick it up, go home, and have a lovely meal. And, there’s almost always leftovers for the next day. CP has had the cheeseburger and enjoyed it but the stars are still definitely the philly cheesesteak sandwich and the teriyaki beef. My standard order is the teriyaki beef bowl and gyoza. It’s absolute perfection. Submariner is a curious place but it’s absolutely perfect and I’m so happy Unilocal led us there!

I’d like to rate it 3.5 stars but 3 will have to do for now. I recently dropped by for lunch for the first time and I followed my fellow Unilocalers’ recommendation of the #2, large Philly cheesesteak combo. I was able to beat the lunch crowd but was surprised how long it took to get my food; likely over 10 minutes. But to their credit, the Philly came out piping hot and the fries were crispy and nicely seasoned. I helped myself to a Coke at the self serve fountain and chowed down. The first thing I noticed was how cheesy the sandwich was, they definitely didn’t skip there. The grilled veggies were tasty, especially the mushrooms, I love grilled mushrooms. The beef was nicely cooked and not overdone. It was a large sandwich for sure and the side of fries was generous too. It’s good to know there’s a solid reliable sandwich joint like this in the neighborhood.

I’m not a big sandwich person, but I love my some grilled teriyaki sandwiches because they’re so flavorful! This place is a small mom and pop shop on Centinela but so worth it! Get a grilled beef teriyaki sub(share it) unless you’re a big eater with a side of onion rings. So good. Gooey cheese, delicious beef teriyaki with creamy mayo on a hot toasted sub, so yum!

True to its name, Submariner is a dive of sandwich shop. This is not the kind of place you bring a date or wear a tie. It’s a grease pit serving hot Hoagies, cold Subs, Teriyaki Bowls, Burgers, and Pizza from an indoor counter. I dove into Submariner in search of one of its Philly Cheesesteaks and discovered the best tasting Philly Cheesesteak made by Korean Americans I’ve ever had. It’s not necessarily an authentic«Philly,» but it was still pretty tasty with Mayo, Lettuce, Tomatoes, Onions, Bell Peppers, and Provolone Cheese for $ 7.99. Instead of Fries, I got Potato Wedges($ 2.19) and the large chunks of potato were outstanding. I definitely recommend them. The store has plenty of seating in front with a TV and in a large back room. Parking is tight, but I lucked into a spot on the side street next to the building. The couple running the joint seemed genuinely nice making Submariner a true mom ‘n pop shop.

When all you really want is a quality, no-nonsense, big olé hoagie, Submariner is THE place to go. In a city that struggles to fashion a decent Philly Cheesesteak, Submariner is a welcome deviation from the norm. They make a great hoagie and they’ve been doing so for decades. — GREATPHILLYCHEESESTEAK! — Great burger selection(including a Western Bacon Cheeseburger) — Teriyaki Bowls(I’ve yet to try these, but a cool option) — Made-to-order Pizza — Hoagies-r-us My only real complaint is that the fries I got were downright awful. They would have been better utilized as packing peanuts. The fries were so bad that even seasoning salt couldn’t save them. :( Otherwise, everything I’ve ordered here has been fantastic. Let’s face it: It’s a bit of a greasy spoon. Don’t come in here looking for a tofu hoagie with sprouts and avocado… Don’t be that person. But if you want a big, fat grinder to sink your teeth into, or a mouth-watering burger to cram into your facehole, consider Submariner. **Best Philly Cheesesteak of 2013, thus far.**
