Paul Barkopoulos, MD

I have been patient since 2005. I too, do not understand the negative reviews. Sure, his practice is unique in many ways and can be also a little chaotic at first glance. I am an artist and had a regular income and he was always understanding my financial situation so I could continue my treatment. Dr. Barkopoulos has been open minded and forward thinking with my issues and helpful working out solutions and the best possible options for me. Thanks to him, I was able to resume work and live a normal life! Wait times can be sometimes longer than expected, but I always keep in mind it is difficult to find a Doctor Who understands me and does not judge me and pays attention to my needs, I'm very thankful to be a patient of his! Sadly I live in Berlin now and I could only dream of a doctor like him here in Berlin to take care of me without bureaucracy and fuzz....

I went through a horrendous period a few years ago. I was referred to this Dr.(?) I had great insurance. I hadn’t even sat down before he said/​sneered. «I don’t deal with dual diagnosis». I was out the door without a referral to someone who does. Continued to self medicate and almost died. Grateful to be treated well by current Dr. Please do not go to him. It scares me there are Drs. out there that won’t take one minute out to help someone that asks for help.

I have been very impressed by the professional care that I have received from Dr. B. and his office. I am a health professional and very picky about who I am treated by. He is understanding and very up on current trends in psychiatry. His office staff are great. If for any reason my appointment was running late, they called to see if that was ok or did I want to re-​schedule. You don’t see that in most offices today. They were also very prompt on filling out insurance forms for me. I would highly recommend this office to anyone that needs treatment.

Shortly after seeing Dr. Paul Barkopoulus my son was charged the standard co-​pay, then he was charged an additional $ 20 to have the doctor fill out a script pad and this bothered me a lot. I contacted Dr Barkopoulus office manager and expressed my discontent regarding this unethical practice. The best example I can give is why would I pay $ 20 to Dr. Barkopoulus for a straw when I can go to McDonald’s Burger King Kentucky fried chicken Carl’s Jr. and get a straw for free, The office manager agreed and stated that because he is a private doctor he can do this. I contacted other psychiatrists and I was told that this is a very uncommon practice to charge patients for prescriptions.

Allow me to join the chorus of disapproval. The staff is abusive, and bad at their job.

This doctor needs to be audited for fraud ASAP. I would not recommend going to see this doctor to my worst enemy, everyone in the office is completely incompetent. They charged me hundreds of dollars up front for my first appointment, billed it to the wrong insurance, and then I had get involved in a insurance battle with them which took about 4 months to resolve. Dr. Barkopoloulos’s office looked like it was hit with a tornado– papers everywhere, no organization, no consistency in billing, clearly NO CARE for his patients. On top of everything, they CHARGE for writing a script. WHO DOES THIS? That is your JOB. Only in Los Angeles.
I honestly never write Unilocal reviews but his office caused me so much financial stress that I want to warn everybody from seeing this guy. They tried to rip me off hundreds upon hundreds of dollars. My insurance company had never dealt with anyone like them before. Do not pay them up front, they are a scam.
Please, stay far away. I cannot believe he was actually referred to me by another doctor, especially seeing all the other negative reviews out there.

Dr. Barkopoulos has been completely amazing for me. He has more than helped my OCD and has such a calming and genuine energy. His staff is fantastic and I would recommend anyone to see this doctor. I feel so lucky to have found him! Can’t say enough good things!

TERRIBLE TERRIBLE DOCTOR. My BF has TRIED to see him, each time they have kept him waiting at least an hour and tried to cancel appointments the same day. Today, they rescheduled his 3:30 appt for 4:15 and when he got there told him it would now be 5:00 instead. Clearly this is par for the course with this doctor.
He didn’t follow up on the referrals he said he would give, and he called the prescription into the WRONG PHARMACY.
Seriously wouldn’t be surprised if this guy was on drugs.
RUN DONT WALK AS FAR AWAY FROM HIM AS POSSIBLE.

Barkopolous is completely horrible. He was an hour late to our appointment. Afterwards, he tried to charge $ 145 «phone consultation fee» in order to get a prescription. Don’t waste your time with this one.

Listen to the other reviews. If you think things have changed because a few years have passed, they have not. I experienced more than an hour wait for my scheduled appointment (which had previously been rescheduled after a previous hour wait), and was told by other patients that this is normal. It doesn’t matter if he «seems apologetic» or «is a nice guy,» that is NOT the kind of service you should expect from your mental healthcare provider. You deserve better. Please go somewhere else.

One of the most intelligent, knowledgeable, personable, and hard-​working doctors I have ever come across. He is incredibly skilled in both psychotherapy and psychopharmacology (in which he is one of the leading psychiatrists in the city). He truly cares about patients and shows great devotion to them; for example, when I have been having special trouble, he has called or texted or e-​mailed me almost every day between appointments, to keep tabs on how I’m doing. He does have a problem with not running on time; however, he now has a receptionist who is very nice, and either she or he himself will call to let you know how far behind he is. As long as you can live with that, you won’t find a better doctor.

Just absolutely the worst doctor ever. I could write a book about how this guy has kept me waiting (hours and hours), cancelled appts the same day with less than 1 hour notice. How they forgot to call in a bloodwork prescription to the lab and I drove up from Studio City only to be told I couldn’t get my blood drawn. Writing up my prescriptions and forgetting what medicine I’m on. The absolute and abject refusal to fill out a very simple form for disability. He just couldn’t be bothered. Worst receptionist ever. Total and complete inability to even pretend to be competent.
Everything the other guy said and more. Don’t go to this man. You will regret it.

I went to Dr. Barkopoulos simply to continue my prescription/​check up if needed. The doctor himself is caring and thorough in his assessment, but my major problem is with how the office is run and how rude his receptionist is.
I was ill and called to see if I could reschedule my check up to get my prescription refilled-​which they are terrible about-​and the receptionist told me that I’d get charged, so naturally I just bit the bullet and went in instead of sleeping.
I arrived 15 minutes early, 30 minutes later a couple with an appointment AFTER mine comes in and gets taken back to see the doctor-​at which point he sees me and nods/​acknowledges my being there. 30 minutes after this, I finally call the receptionist to the waiting room and she informs me that the doctor came out and checked to see if any patients were left in the waiting room (lie) and then accused me of leaving and him not seeing me (lie).
So, if you want to battle an incompetent receptionist with a gnarly playboy tattoo to get to a decent (I guess?) doctor, be my guest… but there are far too many doctors in this city to waste your time with a practice that lacks not only compassion, but class.
The additional star is only because the doctor himself was nice enough/​seemed to care despite having the same conversation with me several times.
