Whenever I get a craving for a banh mi(Vietnamese sandwich) or exotic asian fruits in downtown L.A. I would just walk down Chinatown and always stop in this small mom and pop sandwich shop that also acts as a mini fruits market. They are the best kept secret ever since the new owner took over from the old owner(who didn’t sell good sandwiches or fruits) They have the best banh mi in downtown L.A. and freshest fruits. I have tried ever sandwich there and they still come out with new variety. So let’s start with the sandwich. They have about 8 variety from your basic dac biet to their specialtly(grill pork which they make when you order). They also do special request just like In-N-Out, but you have to order ahead or they might not make it. My favorite special order is the over medium egg sandwich which the cook use shallot to give it a special aroma. It is so tasty and runny early in the morning. They use a new sandwich roll which has a hint of butter flavor and when it is toasted the smell of the butter makes my mouth water. The bread is flaky and crunchy when it is toasted. The filling for the basic is good but what makes them stand out is their special home made filling(chicken, grill pork, grill beef, xieu mai). The owner does not skim on the filling where you can barely taste it as with most shop such as(fill in the blank, Lee sandwiches, banh mi Cali, ect). The special home made filling are all made my the little lady who man the sandwich station. Her grill pork is fresh juicy and hot off the grill with trace of lemongrass. The grill beef is the same as she grill it when you order it, this make the wait a little ling but worth it as the onion oil is combine with fresh grill beef makes the grill beef flavor pop in your mouth. The best so far is her newest flavor(xieu mai). The xieu mai is tender and full of meat instead of only filling. It is not fatty and greasy or dry at all like 90% of other shop. I like to do a combination on my sandwich as I like to do the grill beef with nem nuong(grill pork patty) for $ 4.00 and with their special Passion Fruit drink $ 2.00(made from fresh cut passion fruit). It is a meal fit for a starving king or worker. So after spending $ 6.00 that makes my stomach full, I like to look around for some dessert which in my case is the sweet fruits that they have available. I love to buy the mangos, which I cut into wedges and use the chili salt lime shake. However my favorite is the logan and rambuttan(looks like a small round hairy ball), which is fresh and sweet. They grab the them from the US which allow them to let the fruit almost ripe on the tree. So if you are looking or in the mood for a really good sandwich or exotic fruits. Stop by this shop which is run by a very sweet lady and you will be very surprise and very please with what you get for the price. You don’t need to spend $ 5,$ 10 or $ 15 to get a really good sandwich, all you need is $ 3.00 and a short walk to Ord and Broadway at a place called Banh Mi My Dung.

Stop. You have found the place that has the BEST pork Banh Mi sandwich. Really. Stop paying the ridiculous $ 13 for the sandwich at Mendocino Farms. $ 2.75 will make your head, heart and tummy jump for joy.

You won’t even know you can order banh mi sandwiches here if you’re standing outside of this nondescript ma and pa shop. Once you do know that they have sandwiches that sell out quickly, you won’t know what the meat is made of if your standing outside of the nondescript sandwich store with a $ 2.25 foot long banh mi in your hands. But you’ll know you want to eat it feverishly once you feel how perfect the baguette is. The heat on it is perfect with the jalapeños inside. The cool crispy pickled veggies add a perfect compliment to the heat of the spicy peppers. Just a nice sammich for a really nice price so be sure to pick up a few to eat later. Pro tip: bake in the oven until the bread is golden and you’ll have a totally different sammich experience. My Dung is the sh! t

I go through phases… right now it’s the… «I want to try all the Banh Mis from each sandwich shop!» Since I have been studying in Chinatown every day, this was the perfect place to start. I came here to grab a quick lunch during a long study sesh. The store is small and run by a Vietnamese couple. There are exotic and fresh fruits for sale right in front the shop. It’s pretty packed inside with a variety of Asian candy, snacks, drinks, etc. There are no places to sit, fyi. The service was good. I always order the same Vietnamese sandwich«Banh mi dac biet», so I never have communication issues when ordering…(being Vietnamese doesn’t hurt either, but I can barely speak it!) =\ Ordered: — Banh mi dac biet. $ 2.50 It’s basically a baguette smeared with pâté and mayonnaise filled with a variety of meats(Vietnamese meatloaf, pork… I’m not quite sure actually, haha!) It also comes with vegetables like fresh cilantro, cucumber, chile pepper, pickled carrots and daikon(which I chose to have separated.) The vegetables add a nice texture and flavor to the sandwich! LOVELOVE the fresh cilantro! Oh yeah there are chile peppers in there, so watch out if you don’t like spicy food, although it is not that spicy(to me, anyway.) The bread had a crispy exterior and was chewy in the middle. Overall, the sandwich was tasty and at a great price!

I had BBQ pork sandwich. As other reviewers said it’s a small market where they sell banh mi. 2.75 for BBQ pork that was nice and warm. Meat was bit lacking for my Americanized preference but there were enough veges for my Asian preference. Next time I’ll ask for double the meat. Flavor combination-wise I do like it better than Banh Mi che cali. Only one lady working behind the counter and they do accept order over the phone. Close enough to work and cheap that I’ll definitely come back.

This is my favorite place to get a Vietnamese sandwich in Chinatown! Like Costco, it’s the best deal in town. I get the special for $ 2.50 and a drink, lunch is under $ 4.00.

Iced Passion Fruit Juice w/seeds + hot Banh Mi = $ 4.50! «My Yi-ong» = pronunciation, «beautiful» = meaning(D with line = «d» but D with no line thru it = «Xi» sound) ~ so the grocery shop owners tell me! 5 stars for fresh & affordable drinks & food on the Gold/Red Metro Line!

Awesome hole in the wall banh mi sandwich shop that sells some other unique Asian groceries. We came in here looking for a quick snack. There’s absolutely no seating in here as the store is crammed with Asian produce and snacks in its small amount of real estate. We waited about ten minutes for our sandwich; his little, adorable daughter brought our sandwich out to us. Huge sandwich for less than $ 3! The bread was absolutely phenomenal with a great crunchy exterior. We ordered the grilled pork which was quite tasty, it had a tad bit more mayo than I would prefer but that’s a minor gripe. I’ll definitely be back if I’m in the area.

TOTAL hole-in-the-wall. The owner is a bit ghetto, but charming. The selection of fruits being sold in this random tiny grocery are all fresh and top-notch, however this review is solely about the Banh Mi sandwiches. OMFG. BESTBANHMI I’VEEVERHADINMYENTIREMISERABLELIFE. Forreals. I asked him for a Pâté Banh Mi, and he asked, «only pâté??» and I said, «hell yeah!» and he made a nasty, blarg-ish face. Some people just don’t like Pâté, I guess. lol My partner had the BBQ Pork. When the lady who was making the sandwiches asked me, «you want only pâté?» I asked her, «traditional, please. I like veggies”– and she nodded highly approvingly. Around 10 minutes and a resounding ending of a delightfully homoerotic round of MMA match on the TV, our order was ready. I grabbed the sandwiches, gave the guy a $ 1 tip which made him gleam from ear-to-ear, and made my way out. As we walked along the boulevard, eating our HEAVENLY sandwiches, I had to go back. I had to. I tipped him another couple bucks, pointed at the lady inside and said, «for her.» And I told him it was the«best Banh Mi I’ve ever had. Very very good!!» We’ll definitely be back. :D

I’ve been here only the 1 time but I’m really liking there banh mi a bit better then the buu dien around the corner. I like that they split the sandwich and they have other little snacks in store for compulsive buying. I also think these were the same owners who ran the food truck by the Chinatown swap meet area. Oh and that«A» rating is always nice to have on the window front.

Came here thanks to the recommendation of the man who works at Wing Hop Fung. My Dung is a tiny tiny fruit stand and sandwich shop on the corner of Ord and Broadway in LA’s Chinatown. Didn’t get to venture into Vietnamese sandwiches, but we did purchase some fruits. We got two pounds of longan(tropical fruit reminiscent of lychee that’s peel able like a tangelo) for $ 2.85/lb. My Dung’s longan is cold, juicy, fresh, and oh so sweet. Same can be said for the kumquats! Also, the man(slash owner, maybe?) was sweet, funny, and super nice. He was friendly and not stingy, and allowed us to sample different fruits. Another entertaining fact is that he speaks Mandarin Chinese, English, and un poco Espanol! Cash only here, but definitely a small one stop shop for your standard Asian fruits(i.e. oranges, kumquats, bananas, longans, etc.). What pushes this place to five stars is the friendly gentleman who helped us find what we were looking for.

I won’t throw too much shade at a place that delivers a gigantic near-foot long sandwich for 2.25, but the taste was average for me. There was a ton of mayo and I felt like the vegetables could have been pickled more(at all?). However, they also didn’t skimp on the pâté or the meat, the bread didn’t slice open the roof of my mouth, and their storefront has rambutan and green mango for sale, which is impressive all on its own. The flavor profile leans more towards American-style subs than Vietnamese-style banh mi, and that’s fine, but I prefer the stinky(um, I mean aromatic) pâté, strongly pickled vegetables, and head cheese all over the place! Sorry to ruin it for everyone who giggles when they see the name, but it’s pronounced ‘meh-ee yoong’(approximately). Feel free to forget this information though if you need some comic relief with your lunch!

I had to eat here because of the name of the shop. I bought a couple of extra sandwiches for my friends just so I could tell them to have some of my dung. The sandwiches were ok, nothing special about the bread or the fillings I got a dac biet(special) and a thit nuong(bbq pork). But as other reviewers are saying, it has hella mayonnaise, so if you order it here might want to ask them to tone that down a bit. The ice coffee was good, but they fill up that 16 ounce cup to the top with ice cubes, so you’re probably only gtting like 6 ounces of coffee and the rest are ice cubes and air. The coffee is super thick and sweet, it needs to be cut a bit with some water, or you can drink it full strength and run out 2 sips later.

Okay, call me greedy I went to both bahn mi places today and got three sandwiches, for myself to taste test them, and of course to be a pig My Dung I got the dung get it hehe, anyway it was the chicken since they were out of pork. The Dung(shit) was the bomb as far as taste of the chicken it’s kinda like teriyaki chicken on a baguette. Too be honest I added my own stuff to it like Avocado, tomatoes, sliced cucumber, and some lettuce and I think that helped it to be bomb Diggity The other place The other two sandwiches were from Bun Dien and oh hell no they were really greedy with the meat and veggies so I had to notch it up once again with all my great self toppings from home, although the owner was really pleasant and nice please don’t get too greedy, Thanks. This little bodega/sandwich shop has the most unfortunate name(though it’s not too uncommon for a Vietnamese restaurant). I got the special banh mi for $ 2.25 and the iced coffee for $ 1.75. The banh mi came on a fluffy roll. It was a little too mayonnaise-y for my taste, but otherwise it was pretty good, especially for the price. The iced coffee is legit Vietnamese iced coffee. I actually wished they would water it down a teeny bit more so that I wouldn’t be inclined to finish it all in 3 minutes!

Thanks Unilocalers for helping me find this place. It was 6:30pm on Saturday and I asked the staff if I could still order a sandwich, they said, Yes. Even though they were already«closed», but all those places probably close when they want to or when it gets dark. Ordered the grilled pork sandwich and a Vietnamese iced coffee. It did not disappoint! The bread was fluffy and crispy, but didn’t scrape my mouth like Lee’s baguettes do. Everything was fresh and yes, they took more time than you’d expect, but it’s worth the wait.

Chicken Sandwhich(4⁄5) Disregard the name, it has nothing to with… yeah… And it’s actually pronounced«Me yoon». I grew up on these sandwiches! Back when this devil child terrorized the streets of Chinatown, I’d stop by this shop for a quick refuel before I resume my rampant path of destruction! Ah the memories… That being said, the chicken is moist and flavorful. The bread is soft, moist, and crunchy. None of the ingredients is overpowering, and the chicken flavor really comes through. I’ve brought a friend from Vietnam, and she is THE expert on Vietnamese cuisine. She can tell you about all the proper ways to make the broth used in Phở, which part of the cow is used, how long you’re supposed to cook it, and what ingredients you’re supposed to used in the process, etc. That being said, she agrees with me that Vietnamese sandwiches here are really good, traditional, and reminds her a bit of home. If you’re in the area, and you’re craving a good Vietnamese sandwich, I’d strongly recommend you stop by this place. If you find a better place let me know!

Nam Thai truck was on vacation so I had to find an alternate. This was a block down. Very small. Good selection. But the actual sandwich was AWFUL! I don’t know whats up with all the 5, 4, or even 3 star reviews! the bread was over toasted. I got the Special sandwich which tasted like a can of tuna. And it was just loaded with a shit load of mayo. It really sucked. I was upset that I came all this way to find my favorite Vietnamese sandwich place was out on vacation, but was even more upset that this place didn’t even deliver a decent sandwich. I have had a lot of different Ban Mis and this is by far one of the worst. I think the Vietnamese BF would agree with me on this. My sister said it was the worst ban mi she has ever had. Will NOT be coming back.

Man I LOVETHISPLACE. The owners are cool as hell and their sandwiches are awesome n price to move! The only downside is the coffee… not enough but I like it so whateves. Tip: Order a grip and get there before lunch because they close shop early sometimes. FYI: Ctown shuts down around 5 but My Dung closes earlier on the sandwich tip if they run out.
