Oh man, Heywood closed! Matt B. and I came here a couple times when it was relatively new, and I kept putting off reviewing it because I figured I’d keep going. Then we got married and got a panini press as a wedding present, and that made us think hard about paying $ 10+ for grilled cheese. Did everyone else get panini presses too? I liked Heywood. It was cute and casual, a great spot for a weeknight dinner, with some sidewalk seating for us plus dog. Service was friendly and quick, and the food was good, even if it was marked up. It’s true that I can make grilled cheese at home for very cheap, but Heywood used better cheeses than we’d buy on our own, with some interesting accompaniments and a very good, silky tomato soup for dipping. I got soup and sandwich combos both times I went, and this was the way to go, the nice toasted bread sopping up the soup. It came with a little salad, too, which I mostly ignored, and sometimes we’d get kettle chips on top. The sandwiches were great. I tried the Not Quite a «Classic» and The Heywood. The Not Quite a «Classic» was a pretty simple take on a grilled cheese, featuring Cotswald cheese grilled into sourdough. The Cotswald provided the twist – it was a creamy cheese infused with onions and chives, giving it an extra savory layer of flavor. The Heywood was delicious, made with two-year aged English cheddar and caramelized onion confit on whole grain bread. The main problem with Heywood was that dinner for two rang up at $ 30 or so, which, in the end, proved too dear for something we could approximate at home. Still, I have only fond feelings for this place. May it rest in cheesy peace.

Really good! They had gluten free bread and even vegan cheese! The place was a cool trendy place, the only huge flaw was that their seats were disgusting. Like… really old with a ton of holes in them. It was really weird because the rest of the place seemed nice? Will go back tho!

Closing in 2 weeks?! So sad I discovered this place too late… but at least I got to try it at least once. We ventured to this place because we were looking for a café-like/quiet place to sit, eat, and talk around 9PM. My friends and I each ordered a different type of grilled cheese… the Heywood, The Caliente, and this other sweeter one(forgot the name). They were all delicious and unique. It may be a bit pricey for grilled cheese sandwiches, but it is definitely a very filling meal. It also comes with a delicious small bowl(dipper) of tomato bisque and a delicious salad on the side.

CLOSINGIN3WEEKSSOGOWHILEYOUCAN! They have very good grilled cheeses– a bit pricey but worth splurging on every now and then. Every grilled cheese comes with a side salad and a little bowl of tomato soup. Great staff and service!

I’ve been here twice already– once after a night of drinking, and again because it’s within walking distance to my new home. I had the muy caliente the first time and the holy grail on the second, more recent visit. Both sandwiches were good. I prefer the muy caliente over the holy grail due to the pepper jack cheese and the guacamole. It is nice that your order comes with the necessary tomato soup for dipping as well as some greens tossed in a light dressing. I’m knocking it down from what would have been 4 stars to 3 for one reason– price. I get that for good cheese you gotta pay good money, but I can’t justify spending 12 – 14 dollars for a grilled cheese sandwich.

I’m not one to go gaga over glorified grilled cheese but some friends and I were nearby and decided to check out The Heywood. We arrived around noon time and the place was a ghost town. I looked over the decent sized menu overhead and noticed that you can create your own starting at $ 9;average price with soup dipper and salad is around $ 12. I like the fact that they specialize in one thing and they only do that one thing and they do it well. The guy up front wasn’t very knowledgable when I asked him basic pricing questions and seemed kind of zoned out. I got the Caliente grilled cheese for $ 12+tax and it was prepared in a good amount of time and delivered to my table. I’m not going to lie, I did enjoy the sandwich, does superduper, and a salad. But they only had soda and the one thing I can drink, iced tea they did not have. Also, $ 12 for a grilled cheese just doesn’t feel right. I do like that they have a Unilocal special which I forgot to use. If you’re curious about this spot, try it but it’s nothing special.

After spending the day at Dodger Stadium, my girlfriends and I hit up Heywood. What a great find. Yes, $ 12 – 14 is a bit pricey for a sandwich, but it was worth every penny! We had the Muy Caliente, the Caprese, and the Bill Clinton’s Epiphany(vegan!!) They were all delicious. Next time, I’ll order an entire bowl of the tomato soup because it was yummy and perfect for sandwich dipping. By the way, Heywood doesn’t have its own restroom, so you have to go next door to Lark which has fabulous cupcakes and cookies. Save room for dessert!

Great little restaurant if you’re in the area. Next time I want to try the short rib grilled cheese. This time I had the Muy Caliente which had some great flavor to it, my only suggestion would be to ask for extra guacamole if you’re an avocado fiend like myself. My partner got the caprese grilled cheese and I absolutely loved the pesto sauce in it. Everything tasted freshly made, you can tell they put a lot of love into their food.

Hey wood grilled cheese offers a nice selection of different sandwiches. The venue is set in a dark hipster setting with cool frames and mirror décor. Great place to dine in or grab to go!

I wasted my time and gas coming here. I rely on Unilocal to help me when it comes to finding places to eat and the times they close. You guys state that you are open until 10pm. I got to your shop around 8:50pm 3÷10÷2015 and you guys were closed. You are the only place I’ve been to because of Unilocal who have put incorrect information.

Hipster cheese bar. 1.Food: A) Vegan Cheese: It was okay. I can’t comment on actual cheese sandwich since I went to go eat with a friend when I was on a detox that prevent any dairy products. I can tell it’s made with great quality and it tasted great but it’s nothing I can’t make at home. B) Old fashioned: Boyfriend loved it, but like my comment below not worth it for the price. 2. Décor: Really nice, with wood tables. 3. Price: Expensive 4. Service: Friendly staff. Honestly if you’re a snob with your cheese, come here and give it a try. But spending 10 – 15 $ on a cheese sandwich, you are outta your mind. It would be 2 stars for me but an extra star for the décor and the simplicity of the menu. Great concept but I just don’t know about a cheese sandwich shop, I guess you have to be in a mood for it.

Simple eating done right! When we entered no one was behind the counter, which was a bit odd, but we sorted things out! My grilled cheese was perfect and hit the spot! I would definitely recommend this to anyone who want a casual, laid back spot to eat a fabulous cheesy treat!

So I’ve been seriously on the fence about stopping into Heywood. Probably for the same reasons as all the other skeptics – you’re shelling out a premium for a food any of us could make, sober or drunk, with limited ingredients. See, if it had been really awesome I would have awarded it 4 stars. And it simply cannot garner 5 because the price is outrageous. The thing is, is that it wasn’t really awesome. It was pretty MEH. I ordered the Heywood which is 2 kinds of imported white cheddars and carmelized onions. I believe this was $ 12. It was extremely decadent and heavy. I felt the pairing of the cheese and the onions sounded good in theory, but the sheer amount of cheese and onion that comes in the sandwich(which is pretty big) was overkill. The saving grace WOULD have been the tiny tomato soup for dipping, but unfortunately that just tasted like watered down marinara sauce. I hear they have vegan and non-vegan soups and they switch off– might wanna rethink that. All in all I MIGHT go back, but I’d definitely share. The service was sweet and the décor is pretty well conceived.(Oh, no bathroom)

I visited Heywood with a friend when I was visiting Los Angeles. We’d visited the comic book shop down the street and were searching for something to eat when we walked past this. First – the gentlemen who served us were extremely kind and friendly. Our sandwiches were excellent. Perfect texture, perfect amount of cheese and fillings. The food made you feel cozy without making you feel weighed down. The tomato soup was excellent and had wonderful flavor and texture. The salad was simple but had a house-made lemony vinegarette on top which was just divine. Thoroughly enjoyed Heywood. Will stop in again if I’m in Silverlake.

We’d been eying Heywood for a year, but I’d always been hesitant to throw down $ 12 for a grilled cheese sandwich; when I saw you also get salad and a mini cup of tomato soup, I said I’d go. And if you already saw the stars, you’ve probably surmised I was glad I did so. Cute place with dark wood, cheese facts and random photos on the wall, and overall eclectic décor that fits in just fine in this neighborhood. The menu is up behind the counter(the counter is tall, making the menu a bit hard to see for me)(stop laughing), and there are about a dozen choices; you can also make up your own sandwich, although there’s no separate list of breads/cheeses/toppings, so I guess you just pull ingredients from the sandwiches listed. Order at the register, grab some silverware and water from the stand behind you, and grab a seat. Bonus points for the extra-thick paper napkins ’cause grilled cheese is oily by nature. I had the Game Changer: sourdough with English double-gloucester cheese and a smear of raspberry jam. It came with a little spring mix salad with a light vinaigrette, and the tomato soup«dipper,» a tiny cup of soup(you can also order a proper bowl of soup if you’d like). Everything was served on wooden plates(is that legal?) and came out as soon as it was made; the food’s made up front, so we could see the guys putting our dinners in the sandwich presses and my friend was delighted at watching his piping-hot sandwich oozing brie as it was set in front of him(apparently the cheese I got doesn’t ooze). A hush fell over our table as we started stuffing our faces and we didn’t talk for so long I found it almost awkward. All three of us gave thumbs-up on our sandwiches, although I thought the texture of my cheese was odd(what do I know about cheese, though? Not much, that’s what). «Oh,» you might be saying, «but I’m vegan/gluten-intolerant/lactose-intolerant/am pretending I’m eating a neanderthal’s diet(because mashed cauliflower is totally the same as potatoes) and thus I can’t enjoy Heywood’s sandwiches.» Guess what? You can! There’s vegan cheese and butter(the Bill Clinton’s Epiphany is a vegan sandwich) and gluten-free bread! WEALLWIN! WEALLGETSANDWICHES! It looks like, per sandwiches noted in other Unilocalers’ reviews, that the menu changes, which is cool, and I’m looking forward to seeing what pops up in the future.

Heywood is a unique shop in Silverlake that specializes in Grilled Cheese Sandwiches. I just came in here briefly, and since I was in a rush today, I ended up getting a grilled cheese sandwich and a cup of tomato soup. They do have a unique shop, with only a few tables, but this place has become somewhat of a hipster spot. What’s even cooler is that they even have a vegan grilled cheese sandwich. If you are vegan, then I recommend you come by here, however, I don’t know if they have paleo bread. They do have unique beverages and funky sodas on sale as well. I recommend you get a fruit flavored bottle soda with your sandwich. Overall, a cool restaurant in Silverlake.

April is Grilled Cheese month! Yup Yup so you need to go get your grilled cheese on! Had this place bookmarked forever and was happy to finally be in the area to get some cheesy goodness! On the busy streets of Sunset there are metered parking but it can be tricky to get a spot and when you do they are timed for an hour. Just enough time to go in and get cheesy. Inside, the resto is small with about 5 – 6 tables. You go around to the bar area where you will see their menu on a big blackboard . The staff there is very friendly and helpful if you cant decide which one to order. I ordered the Tres Truffle Shuffle with bacon ~ This is a plate of cheesy goodness. Served with a side salad and very tasty homemade tomato soup. The smell alone of melty cheese and bacon was making my tummy impatient as I took multiple pictures for Unilocal LOL. Finally my first bite and the tummy finally settled down happy and satisfied. Nice crusty country white bread. The blend of the appenzeller swiss cheese and aged english chedder and pointe reyes blue was a perfect blend of flavor and ooey gooey goodness. A dash of truffle salt and adding some bacon to the mix and you got yourself a helluva sandwich. Eyes ~ A small little café! Nose ~ Smells like someone cut some cheese LOL! Ear ~ Very quiet during off peak hours. Mouth ~ Oh my word I couldn’t get a bite fast enough! Tummy ~ So very flipping happy to get some of this yummy goodness!

Glad I came across this place. I always pass by it while driving down sunset but only recently have I wanted to try it due to a grilled cheese fail on a recent trip to SF. The place I went to was called American Grilled Cheese Kitchen and it was just soso. But I digress. So ordered the muy Caliente(Fontina and Spicy Jack melted on top of sliced jalapenos, fresh cream cheese to bring out the flavor with crunchy tortilla strips on a sourdough bread) and the Tres truffle shuffle(country White Bread, Appenzeller Swiss Cheese, Aged English Chedder, Pointe Reyes Blue and a perfect dash of truffle salt). Both were good. The bread is toasty and greasy like how a good grilled cheese should be. The Muy Caliente wasn’t spicy but still good. And the Tres Truffle Shuffle didn’t have the perfect dash of truffle salt. It could’ve used a couple more dashes because you could barely taste it. It was still yummy though. They come with a side salad and a small tomato soup in a sauce cup for dipping. I didn’t really need the tomatoe soup since the grilled cheeses were already flavorful but it was a nice touch. Each one was about $ 11.

Can I just let everyone know how much I love this place? First off, I should mention that I discovered this little gem because the owner/manager of this restaurant is also involved within the music industry; but, beside the case, this place is almost like a hole-in-the-wall in the Silver Lake in LA – a great, hip little area with lots of budding, independent businesses going around. The ambiance of the shoppe is nice and intimate. It has a woodsy brown warmth to it, making it feel really organic. It’s very clean and well-kept. Wide open windows keeps the small space from seeming small. Not too much seating but the seating is just enough if you want to take-out or dine-in. Whenever I have gone, the flow of customers have been pretty steady. It’s never to the point where you are waiting forever to order or receive your order, or ever too lonely to feel awkward in the place. It seems to have a steady flow which marks this place as a nice go-to for locals. Now, about the food… It’s all you could ask for a grilled cheese sandwich! The menu is nice and simple, offering the right amount of varieties.(I don’t think you could go wrong with any.) The portion-sizing and look of the plate is wonderful. It has that nice, hipster-looking feel and is aesthetically pleasing. It’s also got the taste to match! The bread is cooked at the right amount of toastiness, and the cheese is enough to ooze out but still keep its composure. Also, since I can be a health freak at times, the side of salad is SO refreshing. I sometimes wish there was more of it, but the entire plate is honestly one of the most-balanced pairings I have ever had. Also to add, the infamous tomato soup dipping sauce is DELICIOUS. The sandwich is good on its own but the soup takes it to another level. Something about its creamy chunkiness meshes well with the sandwich. Overall, the sandwiches are a perfect pairing with the soup and salad. The meal is well-balanced, and the place offers a very welcoming, intimate vibe. They offer free complimentary water, and uphold a nice, young and hip reputation. This place is a charmer – and not just because its owner won me over! ;)

At one point while eating my Game Changer(«A unique English double-gloucester grilled into a sourdough bread. A light spread of organic, homemade habanero jam give this purple and gold sandwich a gently kick.»)… I exclaimed to my friend, «Good Lord, is this really just cheese and jam???» It was really hard to believe considering the burst of flavors and emotions I was tasting and feeling. The habenaro-raspberry jam took my taste buds to a euphoric state, and the cheese with chives would have been outstanding on its own. Together though… power couple. The tomato soup is the perfect complement to any grilled cheese sandwich, and even the side salad was tasty with a nice dressing. I believe in you, Haywood!
