As one of the few who gave this popular restaurant one star, I am amused to find them CLOSED. hehe… Hence, I would give them an additional star for removing a misery from the human race.

Oh no, it’s gone?! This was probably the best meal I’ve ever had. The Food, the Service, even the Hipster Bartendar was a delight.

I recently found out that Hatfield’s in Los Angeles had closed down, so I figured I’d stop procrastinating and get my(now posthumous) review from 2014 up. Located on Melrose down the street from the Mozza restaurants, Hatfield’s had been a staple of the Los Angeles fine dining scene for 8 years, earning a Michelin star and a bunch of other awards. The mean thing to do would be to rant and rave about how amazing Hatfield’s was, knowing you’ll never be able to experience the top notch service, the unpretentious atmosphere, and the exquisite cuisine. Well, I’m going to do just that. Not because I’m cruel, but because it’s true. And also because I’m cruel. Did I mention they gave every patron a free massage as well as a bag of rare gold coins? You really should go. Oh wait, that’s right, you can’t.

This restaurant gets five stars for the food alone. No matter where this place would be I would give it 5 stars. If you enjoy quiet atmosphere this place is for you. RIP.

It’s a downright shame that this place has now closed. That croque madame was among the best dishes I’ve ever had the good fortune of experiencing before, no exaggeration. Everything I ordered, on the one night I was here, but just stupendous. The prix fixe meal was the way to go, from the scallops to the agnalotti to the short rib there was simply not a false move. Spectacular on every level. RIP Hatfield’s.

i’ve been wanting to try this place for a long time and finally! we ordered Croque Madame, and omg it was just as good as people said! if not better: D we also decided to share SEASONALPRIXFIXE for two and it was surprisingly filling! the bread they served was so soft and crispy on the outside. everything was very flavorful and tasty! finally for dessert i was afraid that sugar and spice dusted beignets would be too sweet for me but i loved it! it was just right! oh and i really liked their drink menu, i had one of the drinks under apéritif and it was very good! i’m sad it’s closing but i love everything i had there that night!

This place was delicious! Such a shame its closing :( We did the tasting menu which was 7 courses, 5 savory and 2 dessert. There was 3 of us and every plate was a surprise, 2 of us would get the same thing and the 3rd would get something different. It was unique and every dish was a surprise! Overall a great restaurant, I wish the owners the greatest success in all their future endeavors.

Sad to see this place close. Beautiful dining area, with an even more extraordinary kitchen that you can look into as the chefs prepare your courses. Incredible presentation of food. Every dish is lovely and perfect. Our table of 6 chose the prix fixe menu, and each couple was able to try all of the options on the menu. We also ordered the signature croque madames for each couple and it was the perfect bite of food and very buttery. Desserts were almost too lovely to eat and I adored the tangerine shortcake mille feuille, which looked stunning. Hatfield’s will be sorely missed. Sad to see you go!

Hatfield’s has been on my list of restaurants to try for a long time, but I was always saving it for a special occasion. After hearing news of them closing by the end of the month, I knew I had limited time to come and cross them off my list. Reservations were made via OpenTable for a Saturday evening and parking is metered street or $ 7 valet. Hatfield’s is a smaller restaurant than I’d imagined. Still, it was an airy and open space with honeycomb-shaped lighting above the center of the main dining room, and an open kitchen as the focal point. The menu offers an à la carte, 4-course prix fixe, 3-course vegetarian, and 7-course tasting menu. I got the 4-course and Mik S. ordered à la carte, but we shared everything. I started off with a glass of Riesling($ 14). Amuse-Bouche Cured Ocean Trout & Crème Fraîche, Bread Service There was only one type of bread offered, a cheese crusted roll that was crispy and flakey on the outside and soft and chewy on the inside. The butter that came along with it had chives mixed in for added flavor. These rolls were so good that we both each ate four and by our third course, we were way fuller than we expected to be. 4-course Seasonal Prix Fixe Menu($ 72 pp) Sashimi of Kanpachi, Pan Roasted Duck Breast, 36 Hour Slow Cooked Beef Rib, Sugar & Spice Beignets, Additional à La Carte «Croque Madame»($ 23), Date & Mint Crusted Lamb($ 38), Mignardise Sugar-Coated Jelly, Everything was really good. My favorite savory dish was the 36-hour slow-cooked beef rib; so tender and flavorful, the meat mixed deliciously with the potato purée and charred broccolini. But the best dish of the night? Hands down the Croque Madame. Yellowtail sashimi layered on prosciutto in between grilled brioche and topped with a sunny side up quail egg, it was an inventive and delightfully tasty twist on the popular French snack. We were able to share one order but it was pretty small and I wish I’d gotten my own. Although the prix fixe plates were appetizer size, I was incredibly full afterwards — the kind where you wake up the next morning and still can’t stand the thought of eating any more. The service was okay; not particularly warm or inviting as our server seemed like he didn’t really want or care to be there. Like Jacqueline D. wrote, professional, but not exceptional. Hatfield’s is a good medium on the spectrum of fine dining with casual spots on one end(Bestia, Tar & Roses) and high end fine dining on the other(Providence, Melisse). The food is underrated and deserves far more recognition, so I’m sad to see Hatfield’s go. Michelin: 1 star(2009)

For my first Michelin star restaurant experience, I was hoping for so much more. I had the pleasure of trying the chef’s 7 course tasting menu with my boyfriend. We each shared our appetizers, entrees, and desserts so I got to try 14 different items. Variety was great. Their desserts were the highlight of the night, the appetizers were good, and entrees were just okay. Service was professional, not exceptional. In my opinion, I wouldn’t return. However, I don’t regret trying out Hatfields just this one time!

Great place for a romantic dinner at a one Michelin-starred restaurant in LA! [AMBIANCE] Dimly lit restaurant with a romantic atmosphere. Great place for a date or special occasion. We decided to go for their seasonal menu and ordered one of each item to share and try! [SERVICE] Our waiter was friendly but he didn’t come check on us as often as I expected. I also noticed that when he was pouring my glass of wine, he spilled some on the table. I expected better service a Michelin-starred restaurant. [FOOD] «CROQUEMADAME»(Yellowtail sashimi, prosciutto, sunny side up quail egg, grilled brioche) –Yummy! This dish was very unique. I really enjoyed the flavor and the texture. This is a must try! *SASHIMIOFKANPACHI(Mango pulp, Persian cucumber, avocado, crispy shallot) –Tasty! If you like sashimi, this is a nice refreshing dish. I really liked the mango and cucumber that was used. *SAUTEEDMONTEREYBAYSQUID(Romaine-tomatillo sauce, Anaheim chile, jicama slaw) –Good. This wasn’t one of my favorites because I don’t really like slaws, but it wasn’t bad either. *COPPERRIVERSOCKEYESALMON(Charred scallion, sambal eggplant, roe, vermouth sabayon) –Good. *PANSEAREDDIVERSCALLOP(Caramelized endive, dried plum reduction, mushroom-hazelnut duxelles) –Excellent! The scallops were cooked perfectly. I enjoyed every bite! *PANROASTEDDUCKBREAST(Apple-rosemary purée, fingerling potato, pistachio-cornichon relish) –Very good! *36HOURSLOWCOOKEDSHORTRIB(Charred broccolini, potato purée, caper hollandaise) –Very tasty! The meat was moist and flavorful. [DESSERT] *MINTINFUSEDCHOCOLATEGANACHETARTLET(Chocolate mousse, mint brittle ice cream) –Very rich, chocolatey dessert. Great for chocolate lovers! *SUGAR&SPICEBEIGNETS(Venezuelan chocolate fondue, vanilla malted milkshake) –Very cute and tasty dessert! [PARKING] Valet Overall, the food was great, had a nice ambiance, but the service could have been better.

I came here with the expectations of seeing Jon Favreau, Scarlett Johansson and Dustin Hoffman working but I guess that’s just a dream. See the movie Chef for reference. Heard great things about this restaurant so I decided what the heck, let’s start LA with something good to eat. The food and the service did not disappoint. The cocktails were lacking a bit but luckily we brought my Duckhorn on such an occasion. On this night most of us in the party decided on the Seasonal Prix Fixe Menu($ 72). For starters, the amuse bouche was a pickled fluke. The light sweetness of the crème on the bottom with the saltiness of the pickled fluke and crispy potato chip on top made it a wonderful bite to start off the meal. The house bread, with a cheese crust, was just the start of an amazing meal. As much as I wanted to eat more bread I had to stop at just one. Prix Fixe Choices: SAUTEEDMONTEREYBAYSQUID — Thumbs up for uniqueness! Very impressed with this dish because I feel like the Chef tried his hands at something different and it worked. The jicama slaw and romaine-tomatillo sauce went perfectly with the squid. The fine slices of squid along with the slaw and sauce made for a perfect bite that melts in your mouth. PANSEAREDDIVERSCALLOP — This dish had a lot of potential but fell a little flat. The scallop did not have crispy top as most do when they are pan seared, therefore making the scallop too soft. The plum reduction tasted slightly burnt so I had to make due and eat it without the sauce. 36HOURSLOWCOOKEDSHORTRIB — Very soft and savory. The potato purée added the perfect amount of starch to the dish. Other dishes at the Table: COPPERRIVERSOCKEYESALMON — Anyone who’s read any of my reviews know how I feel about fish at a restaurant. It’s very hard to cook. This dish was on point with cooking the fish and making it taste fresh like it was raw. PANROASTEDDUCKBREAST — I’d pick this dish over the short rib just because the ribs had slightly more fat to it. DESSERT: STRAWBERRYSHORTCAKE BANANACUSTARDPIE CREMEFRAICHECHEESECAKE All the desserts we just ok. Was good but nothing to write home about. If I had to choose only one it’d be the cheese cake. Overall: Fantastic meal and even better service…

Perfect spot for a romantic date night or celebration. I made a reservation at Hatfield’s a couple nights before my beau’s birthday. We arrived around 7:00PM and it was fairly empty — but picked up during the late night. The venue is clean, simple and beautiful, the service is A+ and the food exceeded my expectations. The menu was small, yet diverse — to get a «sample» of everything, rather than order the tasting menu we ordered both Pre-Fixe menu options(one is vegetarian, and although I’m not a veggie, I loved everything). There is a sommelier around so if you’re debating between wines, he will help you out! The staff is quick to help, new table settings, another drink, water, bread, you name it — this place treats you like a queen & king. The portions were more giving than I anticipated, so you will leave here feeling stuffed and satisfied, maybe even a little tipsy if you indulge on all their cocktails, wines and beers they have available. Hatfield’s is intimate, just the way I like it. Between us two, we tried 7 different menu items including dessert, beer, cocktails, a pinot noir and a port. I can’t express how much I loved Hatfields, and if it didn’t cost me an arm and a leg to eat here, I would dine here more often. I’d highly suggest taking someone here for a birthday, special date night or just for the heck of it. Thank you HF’s for making my beau’s birthday a memorable and fulfilling one! We will be back. *Try the croque madame, sashimi, lolla rosa salad, pork belly and ricotta agnolotti.

I’m oddly not impressed by Hatfield’s, namely the food. The ambiance is really nice and the servers are really accommodating. However, it just couldn’t make up for the lackluster food. I ordered the seasonal prix fixe and they let me swap out the short rib for another pasta dish on the vegetarian prix fixe menu. Nothing memorable. I’ve had better versions of everything elsewhere. Of course I tried their much-raved about Croque Madame(Yellowtail sashimi, prosciutto, sunny side up quail egg, grilled brioche). When I first heard about it from Nicole L., I was already skeptical. How could you butcher a beautiful fish like yellowtail like that?! However, I was intrigued by the concept. While the grilled brioche was buttery and the quail egg added moisture, the yellowtail was super fishy. It’s hard to take one bite but it’s best if you do so, so the proscuitto can mask all. Cute presentation though. I know Sycamore Kitchen is a completely different concept/meal but I’d go there over Hatfield’s any day.

Solid fancy New-American dining. Not sure why it’s listed as French on Unilocal! It’s a dressy, valet parking kind of spot. Also, not really sure why there are so many negative reviews, but we had a fun time here. Don’t get scared off! We arrived early and was able to score Saturday street parking about 2 blocks away on N. Highland. Read the signs very carefully… many have night-time parking restrictions. We were ushered into the enclosed patio area. The whole restaurant is pretty swanky, kinda like a dimly lit upscale CB2. There is a bar and the kitchen is visible through large windows. We started off by ordering a cocktail, the Ulster Breakfast($ 14). It had the most interesting blend of flavors: Knappogue 12 year old Irish, Briottet Cassis, maple syrup, and lemon. It was expertly mixed and surprisingly tasty. The little bite we were given was mixed shrimp with aioli and topped with the tiniest piece of toast. It was a nice way to start the evening. DH decided to go the classic route: the Croque Madame & lamb. I went for the prix fixe, so we could have more choices. We also didn’t want to be totally stuffed. Their take on the Croque Madame($ 23) was truly awesome. It had the perfect amount of crunchiness from a toasted brioche. It paired nicely with the creamy sauce and the yellowtail sashimi was a delightful addition. It is topped with a quail egg. It’s not cheap, but we’d gladly order it again. My appetizer was a kanpachi sashimi with shiso crème fraiche, blood orange vinaigrette, and roasted pearl onion. It was refreshing and looked beautiful. Ingredients were fresh. Dish #2 for me was Copper River sockeye salmon, charred scallion, vermouth sabayon, eggplant, roe. The fish was cooked in a very delicate manner so it was like silken custard. Amazing! We guessed this magic was a result of sous vide. However, the sauce that came with it was overpoweringly sweet. Not necessary to do that, since this type of salmon has a delightful sweet flavor of it’s own! DH’s lamb($ 38) is one of Hatfield’s signature dishes and they do it well. It’s encrusted with date and mint. Not gamey at all. It’s tender and cooked perfectly medium rare. Served with shockingly green chive mashed potatoes, chickpeas, and a generous amount of roasted parsnips. It wasn’t as «offbeat» as imagined… the flavor profile is quite traditional. Minty notes are minimal. Dish #3 for me was the 36 hour slow cooked short rib. After I inquired, the waiter told us this was probably the second most popular after the lamb. One bite and we could see why. It was incredibly tender and packed with flavor. Seriously«melt in your mouth». It came with charred broccolini and potato purée, caper hollandaise sauce. Meat-a-tarians rejoice! You can’t go wrong by ordering this dish. Dessert is pricey and it’s awesome that it’s included in the prix fixe($ 72). You get your choice of any dessert off the menu. Being a chocoholic, I selected the mint infused chocolate ganache tartlet. The plating of this dish was stunning! It was almost too beautiful to eat! The tartlet was filled with a delicate chocolate mousse. The richness of the chocolate nicely complemented the mint brittle ice cream. Definitely not too sweet or dense as some chocolate based desserts could be. Finishing up, the waiter delivered the last bites of the meal. A house-made marshmallow puff on top of a thin graham cracker and coated in chocolate. Sorta like a «s’mores». It was a fun way to end the meal. The service was really excellent, but not stuffy. DH left his seat for just a few minutes to go to the bathroom and the waitstaff folded his napkin within a minute. They went around picking up plates quickly and happily passing out bread and cheese rolls. I noticed that some staff appeared to be Hispanic… not your usual fancy restaurant wait staff. They were likely hired to «extend» the regular staff. Hey, whatever works! A minor gripe is that our regular waiter didn’t spend a whole lot of time explaining each dish. Some of them we barely picked up on what we got. That’s different from what we experienced at other fine dining establishments. It is a bit pricey, but you’re also paying for the area. Dishes didn’t seem that original, but the upside was that everything tasted great… no funkiness that you see in some overly«creative» places. My guess is that since Hatfield’s has been around for such a long time, everyone else copied them and now they look boring. That’s what happens when you’re good! :)

well well Hatfield’s has come across our minds from Food Network, LA Times 100 places to eat, and most recently on an episode of Gordon Ramsay’s Hell’s Kitchen. We decided saturday morning to stop by and got lucky getting a reservation at 630 next one not until 9, little late for us! got lucky and seemed to snag the last reservation, but it was odd as only the patio and half the interior of the restaurant were filled. .. a whole row of tables on one side and a few booths here and there were empty, little odd but nothing to complain about The outdoor is a little hard to notice if you don’t pay attention, and the valet is kind of pointless. .. how snobby and lazy can you be to pull into the parking lot right behind the restaurant? which is exactly what the valet attendants do? We opted to park on the street right in front of the restaurant, free of charge! We were greeted by a friendly sweet hostess, who seemed to be dressed in a Mayan mumu; led us to our table in a white and beige restaurant, very… not sure how to describe it, but very modern yet bland interior. the nice thing is the kitchen has a big window to see all the chefs and cooks at work! We had an older waiter, seemed to be set in his place as he was very boring and seemed upset when we did not order any drinks besides water… yet when the table next to us ordered a bottle of wine, oh happy days. nonetheless, he was helpful, fast, and courteous. The dinner starts off with hors dourves of prawn in a meyer lemon sauce; tender, juicy, tangy, mm so good yet so simple we are also treated to hot delicious brioche! choice of either ciabatta or cheese, the ciabatta is a little bland, but very crispy crust, but the cheese holy moly! the exterior has a delicious crust of cheese, rip it open to hot steamy dough, and even more gooey cheese! we each had three rolls lol and the butter, was regular butter, but salt pepper and scallions on top for a little extra flavor Tonight we decided to order some from the Prix Fixe menu and some from the regular menu; Our dishes included: Croque Madame: Yellowtail sashimi was exceptional! fresh and tender; brioche was absolutely delicious buttery crispy goodness! Quail egg was perfectly cooked, just enough yolk to run down the sides when it was broken, and hints of prosciutto for that savory saltiness Atlantic Black Bass: the fish itself was phenomenal, flaky fish with such a crispy delicious crust; the ONLY issue of this dish and the whole dinner was the incredible saltiness of the sauce; it was a soy-teriyaki blend but holy cow mind using extra extra low sodium??? But the spaghetti squash and mushrooms were delicious Niman Ranch Pork Belly: Sweet Piglets of God’s pigs grace! This is the absolutely most ridiculously delicious pork belly i have ever had!(besides Kogi, that’s a whole different flavor) but THIS huge pieces, 4 of them, on the plate, absolutely pull apart juicy tenderness, melt in your mouth goodness, not salty at all, yet all so deliciously savory and magnificent! I would come back to eat just a plate of this if all else failed!(which it did not!) And the following were from the prix fixe menu: Sashimi of Kanpachi: sliced avocado, delicious fish, blood orange purée, this will be better than sushi joints Copper River Sockeye Salmon: who knew salmon could be this exquisite? delicious flaky moist salmon, big slices of eggplant, and a simple delicate sabayon sauce 36 hour Short Rib: 36 hours is insane… but it tastes so damn good! wish the portion was bigger, but just a juicy tender savory short rib unlike any other short rib out there! with a base of potato purée so creamy and simple yet so flavorful, and charred broccolini For dessert(which comes with the prix fixe) i chose the crème fraîche cheesecake; the cheesecake itself was rich, smooth, and creamy, but the rest was either overly sweet(the caramel) or the raspberry were bitter. the rhubarb sorbet topped it though, cooling and tart Well Hatfield’s what can I say; I came, I saw, I ate, I was satisfied, and I shall return!

***Hatfield’s serves some of Los Angeles’ best savory and sweet courses*** Maybe it is because it has been around for a while and is not as trendy as LA’s new small plates restaurants, but it seems like Hatfield’s does not get the credit it deserves. Hatfield’s excels at producing delicious as well as refined fine dining cuisine. While Hatfield’s does not show the flair of some of California’s most celebrated restaurants like Providence and Manresa, this restaurant from a husband and wife team finds ways to celebrate French recipes while also elevating them with contemporary and creative techniques. Hatfield’s signature Croque Madame delivers the great bread, cured pork and cheese of that classic recipe but also introduces hamachi sashimi(which works surprisingly well), delicate prosciutto and a crispy, crunchy buttery bread crust to reinvent this dish in an exciting and delicious way. Hatfield’s Croque Madame is one of Hatfield’s starters; several entrees are also available. For a greater variety of food, Hatfield’s also offers a seasonal prix fixe(4 courses) where you can customize your own menu. I had the seasonal prix fixe and stated with their pan seared diver scallops. The scallops were high quality as always(fresh, moist and soft). The scallops had a distinct sear. The scallops were a tad salty, but they were balanced out nicely by the dried plum reduction. Also on the plate were caramelized endive and a fun mushroom duxelles where mushrooms and hazelnuts were minced uniformly to produce an interesting flavor and texture contrast. My next course was the Sockeye Salmon. What this fish course really showed was how many other restaurants are not using the best salmon. Unlike those other restaurants, Hatfield’s salmon had a great flavor and color. Salmon is often so dry, but it was moist here. It was medium rare in the center and almost lightly cured-like, but it also flaked surprisingly well. The garnishes were excellent and very Japanese-esque. There was great eggplant as well as roe and a vermouth sabayon that delivered an almost miso-like flavor. For my main, I had their 36-hour cooked beef short rib. The beef short rib was not presented as a braised roast but in evenly cut beef brisket-like pieces. It made for a nicer presentation as well as a more delicious entrée. Often, braised beef short rib can be too savory and too tasting of the braising liquor. With Hatfield’s beef short rib, you still get the tenderness and juiciness of traditionally braised short rib, but you also get a more concentrated beef flavor and a more distinct crust. The garnishes were great – rich and smooth potato purée, sauteed broccolini that was crispy like baked kale(very cool) and a caper hollandaise that provided a lemony and fresh accent to the beef. Karen Hatfield might be my favorite pastry chef in the country(she also produces the excellent baked goods at Sycamore Kitchen like the salted caramel pecan babka). Hatfield’s understands the value of warm and freshly made desserts. Even at great restaurants like The French Laundry, Manresa and Quince, you often do not get the pleasing contrast of warm and cool like you do at Hatfield’s. Karen Hatfield’s pain perdu had a canele-like crust – very rich caramel flavor and a thick and crunchy shell holding a moist, warm and soft center. The pain perdu had sweet elements like a cinnamon toast chip and oven roasted strawberries as well as a tart element from very creamy buttermilk ice cream. Hatfield’s dining room is one of the best in the city. The dining room is elegant and looks onto an impressive glass enclosed kitchen(the dining room was featured in the movie Chef). Service is consistently pleasant and the courses come out at an even pace. Prices are high at Hatfield’s. While Hatfield’s seasonal prix fixe has gone up in price over the last few years, it also allows you to try a wide variety of proteins and ingredients; portions are also generous. While Hatfield’s might not be as flashy as some of the city’s newest restaurants, it consistently produces some of the best contemporary fine dining cuisine in Southern California as well as some of the best desserts in the country. Metered street parking is available.

I had a tough time deciding whether to give this place 3 stars or 4. Food — 3.75 star Service — 3 star, the service wasn’t particularly bad but they were slow and we had to ask several times for things. Not what i was expecting from a Michelin starred restaurant Value — 4 star, oddly enough it was the price that pushed my rating to a 4 star at the end of the day. Considering this place is Michelin starred and the location the prices were pretty reasonable. We all pretty much got the Seasonal Prixe Fix and the general concensus was that the items were average to good. SASHIMIOFKANPACHI — average, i felt it was interesting that they used grapefruit in the dish but the grapefruit didn’t actually add much… PANSEAREDDIVERSCALLOP — average, this thing was basically just drenched in butter and what tasted like beef gravy from a can CHARREDCUTTLEFISH — good, this was my favorite dish of the night, the mushrooms and butternut squash purée really set it apart. LOCALCOD«ENCROUTE» — average, this was very similar to the scallops except with fish… ROASTEDDUCK — average, the only thing I have to say about this dish is that you should choose the short ribs for this course instead. REDWINEBRAISEDSHORTRIB — good, this dish was good but a bit odd in the fact it’s not a pile of super tender beef; instead it was served in slices like steak.

Hatfield’s is as elegant as I remember. For me, it’s a special occasion place, a place to celebrate. The amuse bouche of dungeness crab was excellent, one small bite. As refreshing as the cucumber gimlet that kicked off the evening. Ordered the prix fixe of diver scallop, cod, short rib and cheesecake. Diver scallop was shared by all. Short rib was meltingly tender. Portions were small, but as the courses progress, you start to fill up without that sinking right overly stuffed and immobile feeling. The cheesecake was light and airy, served with blackberry sorbet, pears and a brittle. Do wish there were more vegetables to accompany the protein. Every plate was a work of art, photo-worthy. Others in the party enjoyed duck breast, lamb, mackerel sashimi, the Croque Monsieur w/sashimi and quail egg, and an assortment of sorbets/ice creams. The pineapple chili sorbet is a winner. Sounded so unusual we had to order it, and we were not sorry. Just the right kick. Service was top-notch.

Hatfield’s is a beautiful restaurant, lots of open space and natural light. I loved the honeycomb chandelier. It felt very sophisticated but not stuffy. It is really known for their seasonal prix-fixe dining experience, but I couldn’t spend the night bellyaching from eating too much. I have bookmarked Hatfield’s since watching one of the chef challenge shows, I think it was Masterchef. The Croque Madame was featured and was supposedly a very difficult dish to complete. It didn’t seem like much to me while watching the show. I was wrong, the crispness of the bread without it being greasy and bogged down in oil was probably not the easiest to accomplish. The fish was fresh and oddly paired well with the prosciutto. I savored each bite and wished it was bigger. That’s the magic with Hatfields, the flavor profiles are not ordinary and will surprise you and leave you wanting more. I also had the roasted white fish and tried some of the duck, all of it was delicious. They did a great job at making sure rich foods were not too rich, each dish had elements of sweet, savory, tart, and umami. Fresh ingredients, beautiful space, good service and great company made this an all around great meal. Next time I will be back for the seasonal course, it looks like a good deal.

I just recently had my anniversary dinner with my fiancée at Hatfields. My fiancée and I both opted for the 7-Course Chef’s tasting menu($ 98 per guest). The chef gave different items for us each time so we were actually able to share and try 14 different courses. The waiter even passed out free salmon tartar appetizer before we received our courses. Some of the highlights of our meal was the Croque Madame which was yellow tail sashimi, prosciutto, sunny side up quail egg, and grilled brioche. The pan roasted duck pastrami, chicken breast which was cooked to perfection, and the butternut flan with roasted mushrooms, in coconut soup with a veal sweat bread floating on top. We had a total of 4 desserts which was a little overkill but they were all super duper delicious. My favorite was the apricot sorbet and the chocolate mousse pie. Everything about this restaurant is first class. The restaurant décor was nice, clean, and modern. The waiter was knowledgeable about the menu items and was very attentive without being too attentive. The restaurant was also nice and quite so my fiancée and I could enjoy our conversations with each other. We came a little early so we were able to find street parking which is free after 6PM at the meters. I think the next time I come I will give the seasonal prix fixe menu a try.

When my good friend Sam C asked me where we should go to celebrate his birthday, one of the obvious choice was Hatfield’s. It is without a doubt one of the very best restaurants in Los Angeles in terms of taste, service, and creativity. In fact, when the Michelin Star guide was around in LA, they’ve actually received a Michelin Star. A highly prestigious award. The seasonal prefix menu(Prix Fixe) was what we decided to order from. All the dishes were very elegantly prepared. Made me wished my palate was more refined, so I can taste all the thoughtfulness that went into preparing our dishes. The scallops were fantastic; perfectly cooked and prepared with sophisticated garnishes. The duck breast was better than the Wagyu steak. The flavors, the sauce, and the texture of the duck just defeats the steak in every way. Although the Wagyu was not bad, I’ve definitely have had better; presentation was definitely an eye sore compared to the other dishes and was not as tender as I thought it would be. Probably the biggest disappointment of the night. All the desserts were brilliant. Especially the Earl Grey milkshake. Feels as if you were Eating Earl Grey tea with milk. A sublime way to end the night. A few tips, valet parking is on the side street and they have a $ 30 corkage/bottle. Max 5. Our prefix menu dishes were a bit dainty. The regular menu items are more expensive, but they come with a healthy serving of deliciousness. Always go with the prefix when possible(unless you know exactly what you want).
