Fine Custom Upholstery

We’ve had a leather chair in the family for many years and it was in bad shape with the leather torn on the seat and worn on the back, the arms coming apart, the back bending backward, and the seat sagging.
I found out about Club Chair and Austin on Unilocal.We’re very happy with the work done. The chair looks beautiful, and has the same details (including buttons, placements and studs) as it had originally.
Communication both in person and via email was excellent. I initially email my inquiry with photos.
Austin reupholstered the chair with new genuine leather and new studs (we chose both). He glued back and cleaned the arms, and also checked the springs and padding, restored its springiness and made it more comfortable.

Austin is a true craftsman. He took our downtrodden 110 yr old French moustache backed leather chairs and gave them a new lovely life. He’s not cheap but his prices are fair and his skill is unique. Even better he held to his schedule and even got us the chairs back early and loaned is packing supplies we forgot when we picked them up. High recommended.

I had been going back and forth as to whether to reupholster my sofa and loveseat, or buy a new set. The pieces have sentimental value, so I was leaning toward reupholstering them in leather (they were fabric). I researched different reupholstery places here in the OC, went to one in person, and arranged for an estimate with one… but wasn’t impressed with any of them. When I went to go see Austin and bring him my photos, he dropped what he was doing to spend at least an hour with me, going over exactly what I wanted and making some suggestions. I’m not even going to try to tell you how amazing my new sofa and loveseat are!!! Austin is truly a class act and takes so much pride in his work… you will only wish you had gone to him sooner!!!

On June 4, 2015, I brought in a yellow leather armchair that was missing a button and was in sore need of a thorough cleaning and leather care treatment. Austin, the owner, did a fabulous job with both. This company specializes in matching leathers and doing repairs. I sent him a photo in advance and he assured me that he could match the button and how much it would cost. There were no surprises, except that the chair looked fantastic when I picked it up one week later.

Thanks to all the fantastic reviews from you folks on Unilocal!Because of those reviews we too hired Austin to repair a UK 1940 club set (two club chairs and one small sofa). We were impressed with the website and all the photos of the past jobs. Our set was worn and torn and had been in storage for over 10 years. Sad but true. We just couldn’t find anyone we wanted to entrust them to until Austin. So within two months, we had sent photos for bidding to Austin, agreed on price, delivered set, work completed, insight review with final payment and finally arrival of finished set to house. We were very impressed with how beautiful but vintage the chairs and sofa looked.
We decided to remove the iron wheels on the set which lowered them by 2″, no problem, they are so comfortable and easy on the back. We had lost the original cloth cushions so Austin created leather replacements and WOW so wonderful, match grain and color to original set so nicely! We can’t say enough on how great Austin’s talents are. Send him some photos and have a bid created. Thanks to Austin and Club Chair Inc. for bringing life back to the 40s!

The owner (Austin) is quite possibly one of the nicest people I have ever met. Very kind and helpful. He does great work using high quality materials. I would definitely recommend this place.

I brought 8 dining room chairs into the store. Austin proceeded to give me the lowdown on my chairs: the chairs were too high for my custom built dining room table (the chair legs were cut 2 inches), there was too little seat support (Austin build supporting straps to support the seat), and the chairs would look much better and last much longer upholstered in leather (which we did). The chairs turned out gorgeous and are super comfortable. They are good to go for another 25 years.

I went to see Austin and Club Chair Inc a few years ago. My wife and I had a beautiful teak dining set that was simply falling apart — it was about 35 years old, passed down from my parents. All of the wooden joints on the chairs were getting loose, and the upholstery (which I had always believed to be leather) was starting to wear.
So I threw as many chairs as I could into the back of my Subaru and drove down to Culver city. As I unloaded them onto the sidewalk, a man wearing a greasy apron emerged from the store. I asked him: «Can you fix these? I think the upholstery is leather.» He examined two of the chairs by grasping the backs and wiggling the joints, testing the degree of strength and give. He felt the seats: «Plastic,» he said, with some disdain, bursting my bubble — I laughed at my own ignorance. «These chairs — $ 50 dollars each to fix. Extra if you want the seats remade with leather.»
«Okay, I have 6 of them.»
«Aha. What you need is… a HIDE.»
A what??? Oh, a cow hide. One whole cow’s worth of leather. I had never thought of it that way. OK let’s go with the hide thing. And hey, I have another small chair, part of an office set — if there is enough material in the hide, do you think you could refurbish that as well? He said he would try. I paid for the hide and came back in a week.
The work was magnificent. Flawless. Fine craftsmanship at its best. 7 chairs, all like new. Austin obviously took great pride in the work. He could sense my enthusiasm, so he gave me a tour of the shop — showed me a custom order for a living room set he was making for a client from Texas and several other works in progress. Work done with his own hands. Such rare skill.
Anyway, that was years ago, and I’m sitting on Austin’s fine work right now as I write this review. The chair is solid, comfortable, and beautiful. The leather (real this time!) shines. My wife and I have some leather ottomans that we will be taking to Austin soon.
