DLK Development sued me, despite the fact that he overcharged and did not pay the subcontractors, a clear violation of his general contractor’s license and the AIA contract. I PREVAILED as the respondent after a five day trial. He is now trying to appeal and gain a new trial. A little background:

SCAMARTIST! PULLSEVERYTRICKINTHEBOOK! Bait and switch, overcharges, excessive delays, angry unpaid sub-contractors end up doing bad work. Dan Kaufman doesn’t answer phone calls, texts or emails and eventually slithers away with job left incomplete after many months of empty promises and really lame excuses. Stay Away from Dan Kaufman and DLK Development. I hired Mr. Kaufman to do a remodel of my house. Over a year later he still hasn’t paid many of his subcontractors despite my paying him in full. Since he did not pay the subcontractors, many of them came to me & showed me the invoices that they had sent repeatedly to Mr. Kaufman asking for payment. Looking over their invoices to him made me realize how much he had overcharged me, in some cases by 40−160%, and in one instance giving me a completely fabricated change order bill. I am now in the process of trying to get his license revoked.

Contractor Dan K. prepared a proposal for a small upstairs project at my home that involved, among other items, removing two old sinks and installing two replacement sinks into a vanity in an upstairs bathroom. I was responsible for providing the replacement sinks. I signed the contract, and after the project was completed and I paid in full the agreed upon contract price for the project, I received a letter from Dan K. entitled Change Order #1. This included a plumbing bill from a sub-contractor that he had hired, and consisted of the time and materials that were expended in removing and replacing the two old sinks. I agreed to pay the cost of the two sinks since the contract provided I was responsible for these items. However, the bill also included time and materials the plumbing contractor charged Dan K. for their installation of the two sinks which I had already paid for. i refused to pay Dan K. this additional amount, and Dan K. strongly objected that I owed him that money. He argued that«installing» the two new sinks did not include the time and materials necessary to bring the sinks back to working condition notwithstanding the plain language of his contract. I would not hire this firm again.
