A charming little place. If you are looking to get away, unplug and decompress from the fast pace of usual life-this is your place. There aren’t a ton of things to do/see but the experience is beautiful. A few spots to eat, a few coffee shops, one bakery, a book store, one yoga hut and I think two consignment shops. No target. No mall. Make sure you pack what you need as far as attire because if you can’t find it at the consignment shop, you are S.I.L. Everyone is extremely friendly. It’s the friendliest island of the San Juans and that’s very apparent. Every car waves as you pass on the road. It was refreshing to see so many smiling faces and down to earth people. The Spencer’s spit camp ground is a great place to camp and enjoy nature and wildlife. It’s also a cycling hot spot. A lot of cyclist ride their bikes here and there are bike racks all over the island to accommodate the locals and visitors alike. He ferry ride is less than an hour and is a bit expensive. Make sure you check the schedule and then Double check because not many ferries come to and from the island.

A group of us bikers visited Lopez Island 09.02.12. We arrived on Lopez Island about 10:15AM to give us sufficient time for biking the entire island. The forecast was awesome. Drivers on the island were courteous & patient with slow bikers such as myself. The scenery was alright, since I only saw half the island. We read that Lopez Island was flattest Island to bike on. We come across more hills than Maple Valley Highway & Burke Gilman trails combined. Half our group had to walk our bikes uphill then free ride downhill on a rough road. Half of us are pretty good riders, but cramps & pain took over. I would have enjoyed it more if the roads were flatter. We saw kids biking up the hill we couldn’t. We saw parents biking up with a toddler in those plastic carriages. After visiting Shark Reef Cove, four of us split up for the other side of the island(Spencer Spit) while the two of us backtracked as we didn’t know how many more hills we could handle. We arrived back at the Village for a 45 minutes break before heading back to terminal. The shops close at 4PM so we were able to get coffee. From the village to the ferry terminal was 30 minutes bike ride back as there were down-hills. We also saw people walking back to the ferry terminal. I slept well that night after having my legs massaged.

Well, what a difference! We went from being stared at on Orcas Island, to having everyone wave at us, which they do do here, so get used to it. They smile often too. The road coming up off the wharf is wide. People drive slower here than the other place, I guess because they’re enjoying it all, and want to soak up as much as possible. The hills are minimal, and the traffic is friendly, so biking around here is popular. We legged it about 8 km to the main village.(5 miles — you people are supposed to go metric already, ref the Treaty of the Meter 1875, the USA Metric Conversion Act of 1975, and the current NIST metric program to attempt conversion). We saw the sea — a public park: campground no less, with free public facilities. Lots of beautiful properties, several Earth flags — heartening to see. It was a pleasure to walk. Then we got to the Bay Café — a highlight of the trip, see next review. Lopez has more appeal than J Lo’s arse.
