This is one of our go to places for Asian food — it’s got something for everyone. The staff is great, the owner is attentive, it’s always good. We dine out a lot — and we’re here at least once a month. Can’t wait for the deck to get into full swing.

Great quality, great staff, and overall it’s an amazing experience every time. Chef Jimmy really cares about his customers and really puts his time and effort into every dish he creates. My family and I drive an hour just for his food, and we don’t plan on changing that anytime soon!

Best sushi plus you’ll find in area maybe state. Fantastic soups. Truly friendly service. Everything carefully prepared, Ramen a real treat my wife’s favorite. A gem.

We love going to Red Lantern because the quality of the sushi is excellent and the service is friendly and attentive. The yellowtail sashimi is my staple, but we know we can easily order other things on the menu with confidence, including the RL Fried Rice as well as the Ramen not to mention all sushi on the menu. 4÷13÷16 update: we were able to try the Garlic Amberjack appetizer AND got to test a mango amberjack one that’s currently not on the menu. I highly recommend both and again want to emphasize the terrific service. If you are local to the Mendham/Chester/LV area please do not hesitate to make this your regular spot.

Very fresh sushi. The Pad Thai was very good. The Ramen was excellent. The duck was a bit chewy but the mango sauce was excellent and a nice mix with the crispy duck. Would have preferred a bit warmer.

I am veryyyyy leery about trying new sushi places, so much so that I just don’t. I don’t know what made me try this today, I think I was just itching to go somewhere new… and I’m SOGLAD I did. I think I found my new favorite Japanese restaurant! They had a dynamic and on trend menu and everything we ordered was amazing! I took a lot of advice of other Unilocal reviewers and tried things I probably would have never ordered otherwise — no regrets! I highly recommend Red Lantern and suggest ordering outside of the box! If you have any questions the staff is more than happy to answer them. My only complaint is that the space is a little cramped and the tables are on top of each other. Luckily I came for lunch so this wasn’t an issue, but I would be interested to see how the dinner crowd functions. Either way, I can’t wait to return!

Excellent sushi! Live in Long Valley and finally a great sushi place in the area. The perfect 10 sushi dinner is delicious! Spicy and regular edamame also a treat. Good bar with great selection of sake. Big fan of this place!

My wife and I tried this place because I wanted to eat somewhere new. I’m really glad we did! Appetizers We had the Garlic Amberjack and the Salt & Pepper Calamari. Both were excellent especially the Garlic Amberjack. I was really blown away by how delicious this dish was. Main Course We each got our share of the special rolls which were all great, but what stuck out for me was the Scallop with Yuzu Truffle Sea Salt under the Contemporary Sushi. It was so good. I wish I had ordered more than one piece. The sushi was very fresh and you get your money’s worth. I eat quite a lot and felt very satisfied and full! Dessert We shared a bowl of chocolate ice cream and a plate of Mango Sticky Rice. GETTHISDISH. We both had a great time and will definitely be back!

We went here for our 2nd anniversary based on the Unilocal reviews and were not let down! The sushi rolls were fresh and creative. I also had the seaweed salad, which was a generous helping served in a martini glass. The special rolls were all 8 pieces, so while they weren’t base-priced, the size and quality were good. You will not leave here hungry!

This is my go to restaurant for sushi and that includes Nobu in NYC. If you read any reviews that rate this less than 4 stars, those people have no clue what good sushi is supposed to taste like and they should go back to super market and gas station sushi. We’ve been going here for months. I’d eat here once per week if I had the time. Everything I’ve eaten has been fresh and awesome. Here’s a few of our favorites: Salt and pepper calamari — fresh and prepared just like a salt and pepper dish is supposed to taste like. It’s beautifully presented — even the little little pan fried veggies are fun to eat. Hamachi Crunch — This is their take on the classic Nobu appetizer yellow tail and jalapeño. My daughter and I order this every time we are there. Other classics include their garlic amberjack and their tuna pepper saiad which is also their take on Nobu’s classic tuna sashimi salad. All of their raw fish dishes and rolls are a delicious spin on your standard sushi. Their specialty rolls are out of this world — our favorites include the million dollar roll, volcano roll, and the long valley. On the sushi side — if they ever have any special fish they are fantastic. I almost always get their sea urchin with monk fish liver. I’ve tried sea urchin all over the country — usually it’s an acquired taste. Not their sea urchin — it’s like eating sweet butter. The Japanese red snapper with plum paste jell-o is delicious. I also love their fish roe with a raw quail egg. You can’t go wrong with any raw fish dish. If you need to embrace your Thai side — the thai basil beef(or chicken, I just prefer beef with the thai basil) is authentic and delicious. Pretty much any of their Thai dishes are authentic and awesome. The place is small and a little tight but everyone there is having a good delicious time. You will too. Ignore any of the few bad reviews — they don’t know what good Asian food is supposed to taste like.

By far one of the best dining experiences we have had. Atmosphere, service, food were all just amazing. Would recommend it to anyone. The beef satay was our favorite part!

We love this place. The food is fantastic. The service is wonderful. I have nothing bad to say. We’ve tried some of the specialty rolls. They’re fantastic! Being able to get half size servings is great

This is by far the best Asian restaurant in the Hackettstown area. My mom and I were ecstatic to find this place and enjoyed not only incredibly fresh food, but great service and a nice outdoor deck(the deck faces the parking lot so not that scenic, but once the sun went down and we were surrounded by tiki torches, it was great). Can’t wait to return for the sushi.

One word… FANTASTIC!!! if you are a real sushi eater, you will really appreciate this neighborhood gem. Authentic preparation with a far superior presentation. Their chef takes the time to make every single dish come out with its own«personality». This was our 5th visit here and each time it has been better than the prior. The Red Lantern not only rivals, it surpasses some of the most well known sushi restaurants in Manhattan. I have been to Nobu and Sushi Yasuda many times and the Red Lantern offers a superior experience for a fraction of the cost and 50 miles closer.

Amazing sushi, small intimate setting, friendly and knowledgeable service… a little gem nestled in an antique building in Long Valley. Truly the best sushi I’ve had outside of NYC. Not inexpensive but worth every cent.

I have followed Chef Jimmy from restaurant to restaurant. Don’t try the standard sushi u normally would get. The cold appetizers are where it’s at! Get the garlic amberjack, the tuna guacamole and more. Ask what special sushi they have at the bar… chances are they have some fresh fish that u haven’t tried before and it will be amazing. Love it!

excellent choices, lovely ambience, lovely presentation, friendly atmosphere, and close to home. 3 Diners– A bit pricey but everything we ate was worth the cost. Carpaccio app., shrimp tempura roll, the dinner for two … OMG good! and a very nice sticky rice for dessert. I have had Sushi in all over the world… this held its own as one of the top 5 places I have eaten Sushi. They even have sake — none of us are drinkers but its there for those who are… id have given 4.5 but not an option. i have NEVER given a 5.

My fiancé and I were visiting family in Long Valley and had a free afternoon. So we decided to find a place for a quiet lunch. Her family told us about a new sushi bar that had just opened up right down the road, so we decided to give it a shot. Man were we impressed! We ordered the hot and sour soup to start, which is my lady’s all-time favorite. She said it was some of the best she’s had! Moved on to the Hamachi Crush(see my pics) something I’ve never really seen on a menu before. It was very delicate but still so much flavor! They have a lot of specialty sushi that is sold by the piece, but we decided to go a more traditional route, which was also easier on my wallet. We ordered the Philly roll and an eel avocado roll, 6 pieces, both very good! Then, our waitress Chrissy(who was awesome and very attentive) came back with some pieces of sushi compliments of the chef. One of the pieces was a white tuna with sweet Mizo sauce and kiwi(which Chrissy described as «dessert sushi»). Now, the place is small, quiet, quaint and clean. Which was perfect. They have a small wine list(which the owner, James, assured me was getting a little bigger next week) and a very good cold sake selection. If anyone is looking for excellent sushi at a reasonable price this is your place!
