YMCA of Long Island City

A friend of mine and I enrolled at the YMCA in Long Island city and we have been going about five days a week. Everyone and I do mean everybody has always been exceptionally nice and exceptionally helpful. The facilities are great the water pressure in the showers fantastic they have a sauna, a swimming pool, a running track the weight room and aerobic room dance room a huge fitness room a basketball court and cycling classes in a spin room. So we’ve been going there at night to work out then we get in the sauna take a shower and get dressed for bed and go home and sleep. Oh and I have a parking pass so I never need to worry about parking. I did forget my towel one time and they had them for purchase at the front desk. Definitely a great decision for us to join the YMCA!

A great variety of classes fitness options. Pool and large number of machines. Friendly staff. They work to build community with targeted groups such as a running club

This facility is conveniently located right off the 33^rd st train station (7 train).
It is a relatively huge facility and services pool, computer rooms, sauna, basketball courts, handball courts, running track around the gym, and more.
It is quite pricy but it is one of the only recreational centers around the area that offers a all-​in-​one package.
I do not have membership or nor had for the past 6ish years, however I’ve dropped by with some guest passes a few times.
The gym has everything you need from major compound machine/​freeweights to cardio to yoga balls/​mats.
The swimming pool is not as deep as the one in LaGuardia (few blocks away). However it is workable. They do have specific hours for age groups, meets, free swim, lap runs only, etc. so make sure you grab a schedule for this.
Overall the facility is great. Price is a 3 star but I’d recommend for a year just to check it out. They often have promotions with no signup fees and whatnot to encourage registry so take up that offer and go do yo thang’ (:

Every time I go here, the members and experience was great. I recently went on a Sunday to get more information about becoming a member, from the front desk. The front desk individual name was Carl, he was very polite to me and my son. There are VERY huge lines at this YMCA, but he was very fast, and knowledgeable. I also watched a swimming class and nothing looked a bit out of order. The management seems as if they are doing a fine job. I would recommend watching some of the older kids. Some are disrespectful.

For $ 60/​month, this Y is a really good deal. Everything is clean and well-​maintained, and the weight rooms have a wide range of machines and plenty of free weights. The classes I’ve taken have been great. All of the staff are friendly. I’m taking one star off for the issue of unsupervised kids running around the exercise areas. It’s good that this is a family-​friendly gym, but it’s annoying and unsafe for children to play near weights and cardio machines.

A real community Y that’s clean, has ongoing refurbishments, and plenty of exercise options.
Would rather that kids didn’t get free roam in the aerobic room, this is a pretty consistent problem. And as a member for 6 years I’ve never so much as gotten a note of appreciation even when my costs went up.
But for the price it’s a good deal, especially for NYC.

I was a member for about 2 years. I loved the exercise room, classes by Jonathan — boot camp. Unfortunately, the staff upfront at the registration are rude, and unprofessional. I hope they be nice and good to people. I also had my bike stolen, called the cops, even the cops said why you coming to this place .Not a safe place, we always get calls from this place, people loosing their stuff on and on. So, from then I have decided not to return. And I am happy where I am, with people who knows what kindness means.

A clean, unpretentious fitness center with lots of exercise options: a heated lap pool, small indoor track, good selection of fitness classes, and always a spare cardio machine. There are also free weights and a basketball court (haven’t tried either).
I don’t think there’s ever been a time when the place was so crowded that I couldn’t work out. It’s a family-​friendly place, so if kids aren’t your thing, it’s best to go early in the morning or in the evening.
The $ 60/​mo fee is fair for what the Y offers, especially given the variety of included activities. Adult swim classes (for an extra but modest fee) are good, with helpful instructors.

A really great gym, comfortable and well maintained. It gets busy so sometimes takes awhile for things to be fixed but Y does great job keeping up. Terrific classes for family. Love the people who work here too — they are absolute best, helpful and welcoming. Also love the family feel, not super macho kind of gym, just regular people working out.

Cool place but I like a cardio room with some music and the sauna isn’t a steam room which I was hoping for. The price is little much at $ 60 a month considering I pay $ 29 a month at la fitness and get all of the same and more but being that it’s close to my new house is the only reason I use it. Very clean place though.

Horrible customer service. I called to cancel my membership before the 15 notice period, left a message. And never received a phone call back. I had to follow up myself with the membership department and because they did not follow up on my message in a appropriate amount of time, they are trying to charge me with an additional month of service. This is simply a lack of customer service a prime example a simp any trying to STEAL MONEY. the front desk agent Nyanna is very rude and disrespectful. Through the entire conversation she talked back and was very condensing. STAY AWAY FROM THIS BRANCH. THEY WILL STEAL YOUR MONEY. JUST GO TO NEW YORK SPORTS UP THE STREET. ITS A BETTER GYM.

horrible customer service at the front desk ¹⁄₇ 9pm front desk weak in sales couldnt pitch me sale and did not offer a free trial pass to try their gym very unprofessional!!! the front desk guy i was talking tooo ignores me immediatly starts interacting with walking out club members to give them free shirts. go to 24hourfitness worth the money and everyday custumer service interaction there.

Clean facility & friendly, helpful staff. Signed my kid up for swimming classes and she loves it. The pool is heated and not more than 4 feet deep. The rest of the facility is organized well and has all the gym equipment, machines & free weights that you could possibly need. There’s an indoor running track that looks down into the pool area. This location also has an outdoor parking area (additional charge) if you’re driving otherwise it’s across the street from the #7 elevated subway stop at 33 St./Rawson St. Station. Nice, family atmosphere.

After visiting a couple other Y’s near me and checking out the crazy prices on comparable gyms that offered a pool, we decided that the LIC YMCA was the best deal. The facilities are nice, the building is updated, overall great value.
The real deal came when I was moving away and had to cancel my membership. The gentleman who had given us out initial tour, Daniel C. (hope I got your name correct) also helped with the cancellation paperwork. In less than 5 minutes he told me how I could keep my membership to the end of the month, avoid paying the next month’s payment (even though I was less than 2 weeks from billing), and told me how I could avoid paying the enrollment fee if I decide to move to a new YMCA that is closer to my new place within 90 days.
Basically let me get in a few extra days, saved me 100 $, and possibly sold me on renewing my membership after my move. None of the BS I’ve dealt with over the years from places like 24hr fitness when canceling my membership.

This gym gets 2 stars for the nice facilities.
It gets 0 stars for the scores of unruly kids running around the weight room. I have repeatedly brought this attention to the staff and they have BLATANTLY IGNORED this issue. It’s clear the YMCA is not a «community» gym but one that is too scared to tell off irresponsible, crappy parents.
YOUR 5-​YEAR-​OLD WANTS TO PLAY WITH THE FREE WEIGHTS? BY ALL MEANS, WORK IN!
Sigh…I miss Astoria Sports Complex. If you like to lift and don’t need any extra BS, it’s a good, basic facility that is well-​kept. The only reason I stay here is for the convenience factor.

Nice facility but theft is really a big issue in this gym now.

The facilities are great and some of the people there are so friendly, but unfortunately, it’s gone downhill since I joined a couple of years ago. It is so overcrowded — anytime I’ve tried to use the pool even early in the am there’s no room. There are so many children playing on mats and with equipment without anyone watching them. It’s just so frustrating to try and do mat work when kids are throwing balls at each other or doing somersaults into you. One Saturday, I watched a guest tell a Y employee about the kids running up and down the hallway and she ignored him! It’s first the parent’s responsibility but there are times when the Y needs to step in.
As I wrote in my previous review, there continues to be a lot of theft issues yet nothing has changed in how they manage who is going in and out of the gym. They also decided to raise the rates and we didn’t get a notice about this until AFTER my credit card was charged. Not to mention the rates went up $ 20!
Until now, I avoided writing negatively about them online, and instead wrote a formal letter to the executive director. I do want this location to succeed, but I now despise going here to workout and things really need to change. Two months later, I haven’t gotten a single response or recognition that she received my letter which I find incredibly unprofessional. I’ve heard of these same issues from several other members, which must be why the gym tries so hard to recruit — because they’re losing so many current members!

I wish I could give this place a better review. But I’ve been there over a dozen times now, and know this place has a lot of wasted potential.
My wife and I joined solely b/​c they have babysitting from 9:00 — 1:00 and 5:00 — 9:00 (it’s 10:00 — 1:00 on weekends). At $ 94/​mo. plus a $ 120 joiners’ fee, the Family Plan is not cheap. But frankly, the babysitting is invaluable to us, so we don’t have much of a choice. And the babysitters seem to do a good job.
The gym is broken into two sections that are split apart. You have to go to the second floor to get to the weights/​aerobics room, and then have to go back to the first floor, walk to the building’s rear, and then go to the second floor for the cardio and weight machines.
They have a beautiful basketball court and decent pool. But their schedules are so restrictive that we can never find time to use either. So, they’re virtually useless to us, and will be to many others.
The pros of the two workout areas are as follows:
1. Decent freeweight area with a few benches and a squat rack
2. All cardio machines are relatively new and in good working condition.
3. There are a ton of cardio machines, so we’ve never come close to having to wait for a machine
4. You usually spot workers cleaning around.
The cons, unfortunately, are more plentiful:
1. Despite the workers’ efforts, the weights area does still seem dirty. I don’t think they can keep up with the volume of people at this place. The mats are worn and look very old.
2. It’s been very hot this summer, in both sections. On one occasion in August, the a/​c broke. It was like working-​out in hell. There was no communication to the members about what was happening. I begged for a fan, was told there were none, and later spotted desk workers bringing a fan into their little office while people were dying on the weight floor. I sensed a general contempt for the membership.
3. As is with almost every gym, there’s a sense of the inmates running the asylum. Thankfully, the crowd tends to be mature and respectful. Perhaps that’s due to the family-​oriented vibe of the place. But rules of etiquette are not enforced, so all it takes is a few knuckleheads to ruin it for everyone else. I know through too much experience — posting more and more signs is not going to change certain peoples’ behaviors. Kicking them out or giving them stern warnings will.
Perhaps the most grating and common occurrence is the open-​window phenomenon in the cardio section. The a/​c is working very hard to cool a large section of sweaty people while it’s horribly hot and humid outside. And yet, without fail, some idiot has to leave at least one window open. It baffles my mind that an adult can be so hopelessly stupid — they’re trying to cool a 72-​degree room with 95-​degree, humid air. And people wonder why I sweat like a freak.
Nevertheless, it’s the Y’s job to ensure that this doesn’t happen — not mine. But somehow it’s always me closing the windows, while the employees seem to not care. I can’t imagine what their ConEd bill must be.
Were it not for the babysitting, this place would not be worth the money.

A friend let me use a guest pass and I have to say I really enjoyed my work out. I’m used to Lucille Roberts (cringe) so this was definitely an upgrade from that sorry excuse of a gym. I dont know why YMCA’s get such a bad rep…
We were warmly greeted by the staff. Passed by the pool and it looked nice, I was tempted to jump in. We worked out in the «cardio room». Very clean!!! I used the bike, treadmill and elliptical. I LOVE the fact that all the cardio machines had TV’s, top chef got me through my work out! It was great! I also lifted some weights, really impressed by how many machines they had and everything was so organized. I know I’ve only been here once but I also noticed that the other people working out were really nice! people actually smiled, cleaned up after themselves and sanitized the machines… complete opposite of Lucille Roberts.
I wish I lived closer to this YMCA! Had a great workout and I’m expecting more guest passes… hope you’re reading this Dino!

Alright YMCA of LIC way to go! Little by little and you’ll be the most sought after YMCA by most gymsters. You have a long way to go but I have faith that one day life will be grand.
When I joined over a year ago, I was dismayed by the dirty floors, mildew-​ridden bathroom walls, and stinky lockers. The machines seemed rusted or broken. They’ve made some improvements over the past several months. I am happy to report that they almost have their sh*t together. The staff could be a little nicer and more attentive, especially when there are children running on the treadmills and landing face first on the belt and miraculously walking away to find mommy and daddy. They’ve added sanitary wipe stands, some new equipment, did a whole interior make-​over and the place smells better. Sigh– it’s now worth every penny of my $ 54/​month contribution.

I take back what I said about the treadmills. It has been a while since I used to swim here, maybe 4 – 5 years? And I’ve never went above the 1^st floor, before that.
So I finally went to the fitness room. I only go there to work-​out, and not care about other people. But since I go straight to the mats to stretch, first thing, before I lay a finger on a machine, I can’t help but notice creepy men in the background (and even on the side), just looking in my direction. There’s a reason I have to look at myself in the mirror when I’m stretching, hello. And I’m not even being paranoid. If you’re a young female, you’ll know what I mean.
They have recently gotten new bicycling machines that have an iPad-​size screen, but they suck. It takes me about 5 minutes after I dock my iPod and load the songs on the screen, to get nothing out of it. But I really don’t mind about that, I’m there to workout. The only have a problem with this room is that there’s no air conditioning [at times].
I’m really trying to cool off and be eco-​friendly by not using paper towels but I have to because I’m only sweating like a pig because there’s no AC in the room to cool me off.
