Sometimes jumping on the train(the wrong way) can lead one to yummy pastures! I am blown away by the taste of this Indian food!(Typing while I chew.) So much flavor! Huge strips of ginger delight my sag paneer. Perfect garlic naan. Tantalizing mango lassi. And, it is 12:46AM on Thursday morning, technically(Wednesday night to me). I am a keeper of late hours, which limits my food availability in «The City that NEVER Sleeps”– Whatever! Clearly, you gotta be in the know! Or, have dumb-luck & an adventurous spirit From the outside, the place looks like a lame sports bar… But… Behold, delicious Indian morsels will tempt you through the door. Regardless, I a grateful to have taken the long way home… Again. I am in culinary heaven!

Walked in around 10:15 pm at night on Sunday to use up my groupon. One big table in the back and no server/wait staff in sight. Helped myself to a menu and waited for a couple minutes before someone came out from the kitchen to take my order. It’s fine but a bit awkward to stand around not knowing if the restaurant is still open and like a lot of people have mentioned, it’s in an industrial zone and parking was not easy to find. Placed my order of chicken tikka masala $ 10.95, chicken vindaloo $ 11.95 and nan $ 2 at 10:20pm, the guy said 20 min which seems very reasonable. There was one TV on and I sat down in the bar and played game/surfed the web on my phone. 20 minutes had passed, more people had came in and it was actually getting crowded. No food, and no comments from the guy. I made eye contact with him and he said, it’ll be out in a few minutes… it was not so. I didn’t leave with my food until 10:55. :( I had the food the next day at work and it was delicious! The nan was quite big and delicious after I heated it up in a toaster oven. crunch on the edges and soft and doughy in the center. The Chicken tikka masala had a slight kick to it and a very generous portion of chicken breast. It was really quite good. I have not tried the chicken vindaloo but I expect it to be delicious too. The food is really good and the next time I come, I will definitely call ahead and not wait in the restaurant. But this Indian food is really good!

The food was really delicious here. The ambience is sort of a trip, but don’t let it scare you off. The food tastes like it is based on family recipes handed down generations. It is fresh and well prepared. They have a full bar but don’t get too drunk or you may not find your way back from the bathroom.

Five Star Diner gets 5 stars from me. I ordered food from here through Seamless and had no problems with delivery. The food was delivered fast and hot. I got the butter chicken($ 12) and garlic naan(3). First of all, their prices are ridiculously cheap. Second of all, this is some of the best Indian food I’ve ever have and I’ve been to tons Indian restaurants in my lifetime(even had my Sweet 16 at one many years ago!) I’m pretty picky when it comes to butter chicken. I’m usually disappointed by bland, watery sauce. Not so at 5 Star. Their butter chicken sauce is extremely creamy and flavorful. Every bite I took I tasted a different spice. It was heavenly. They also did not skimp on the garlic at all with the garlic naan. This was the most ever garlicky naan ever. Tons of pieces of fresh garlic. When I dipped it in the butter chicken sauce it was so extremely good. The meal also came with a free container of delicious rice. If I had to choose my last meal on earth– I think this would be it.

NEVER order delivery here! The lady who takes the delivery order is a total b****. The delivery guy didn’t have change so I called back and asked if I could pay with my card instead. She started yelling at me and told me it wasn’t «fair» that I was doing this and that it was my fault that he didn’t bring change. She continuously ranted for a good 20 seconds about how I wasn’t doing my job. HAHA excuse my I am your customer and last time I recalled you didn’t even tell me how much my bill was. She also said that she gave me free rice and that I should give the delivery guy the full $ 20, mind you my bill was $ 13.00! The container of rice was half way filled up and crusty(last of the batch). The delivery guy eventually came back to get the change and I gave him an extra $ 2.00 tip on top of the $ 2.00 I already gave him. He shouldn’t have to go back and forth, he’s also losing money when he could be making tip elsewhere. The food was subpar and cold when I got it but the naan was tasty. I asked them to make my food extra spicy and it wasn’t spicy at all. I will not be ordering from here ever again.

This place is DABOMB! I’ve been coming here for years for the Aloo Gobi and other vegetarian dishes and it’s like crack. Best place to hit late after a night on the town in Queens. And there’s always good entertainment on the television. Garlic nan is also too legit.

Their name is not misleading at all but the location and outside appearance might me. Probably my favorite place to have a low key dinner with my fiancé while running errands on the weekend. I haven’t had a dish that disappointed yet — and the staff is Really nice!

Been coming here for years with my family, and absolutely love the casual diner environment and delicious north Indian food — especially fond of the vegetables pakodas, gobi(cauliflower) chilli appetizer, chicken muglai and the chai as a sweet treat to wrap it up. Don’t let the industrial neighborhood prevent you from visiting this awesome eatery. My mouth is watering just writing this review!

I am only giving 2 stars because of friendly server and fresh food. From outside it looks like a chinese carryout place… small. but from inside its really big they also have event room. nothing great… they had very low heating… we had to ask them to increase it a little bit. We went for Sunday lunch and there was litterly no one there. . After reading Unilocal we were super excited n hoped that food would be as good as mentioned by everyone. I am super disappointed with this place. they did make fresh food. but it was flavor less… I have no reason to go there again. .terrible food. terrible ambience. slow service. nothing spl in menu… and moderately costly restaurant…

So entertain me for a second. 5 star diner looks TERRIBLE from the outside. It looks like the sort of place you would want to avoid at all costs. You couldn’t be more wrong and would miss so much. This place is hands down one of the BEST Indian food places I have been to in a long time. It’s incredibly authentic, and also plays Bollywood movies on the TV that’s situated near the bar. A fantastic location, with great food. Order anything. It’s all really good.

Never have I experienced worst delivery than this place. When it does come, 90 minutes is a good day. The last straw was though when I ordered and never got a confirmation from them, only to find out 90 minutes later from Seamless that they weren’t delivering that night. Never bothered to contact me to let me know — so I’ll never bother ordering from here again. Samossa Bites and Aanchal are more than adequate alternatives in the neighborhood

I ordered take out from here and I must say I was underwhelmed by the food and the take out experience. When I placed the order they told me it would take 20 — 45 minutes. I waited an hour for my food. I wouldn’t say this is terrible, but it’s not great. The reason we get takeout is so we don’t have to leave our apartment, right? I live in a high rise building and when the driver arrived he asked me to come downstairs. When I asked him to please come upstairs, he had a rude tone and told me he couldn’t find parking. Why do you have a car instead of a bike? I was annoyed that I had to change out of my PJs to go downstairs to my busy lobby, and outside. As for the food, I will start on a positive note and say that the naan bread was good. I had chicken tikka masala and asked them to spice it up. It was not spicy, I found the sauce pretty watery, and the chicken was dry. I don’t think I will be ordering from here again.

This $ 10 all you can eat buffet is a hidden gem. At first glance, it is obvious that the restaurant has seen better days. The ambiance and décor is a little sketchy, and a little bit outdated. Some of the booths are even quite literally falling apart. But as you take the first bite of food, it does not matter any more that you are sitting on a slanted rickety bench that might or might not hold you. As you take the first bite of the warm fluffy naan bread, fresh out of the oven(or where ever naan bread comes out of), you stop caring that the table could use a quick swipe of a lysol wipe, and just give in to the culinary bliss. Cleaning might not be their thing, but food certainly is.

Let me explain my 5 stars for 5 star: The atmosphere is crappy, it feels like a hole in the wall diner, but that is really part of the awesome experience in my opinion. It’s one of these places that has an ironic name, looks like a front for some other«business», but when you taste the food it’s like biting into a piece of Indian heaven. I really have never tasted more authentic and delicious indian food in the city(short of going into the depths of Jackson heights), and I have lived here for 13 years. If you are a foodie, you will not be disappointed. Come for the food, stay for the Indian TV.

The food here is ridiculously delicious. I have to start with that. Now here’s the story: the folks who run this place truly cannot be bothered. One night recently I called them TENTIMES to place an order before I got an answer. They won’t deliver after 8pm, if at all. They won’t accept anything but cash at certain times and for certain people(translation: preppy white dudes) and my order is never under like $ 35. Still, cash only most of the time. The inside of the place is not exactly hospital clean either. I hate myself for enjoying their food so much, but I won’t give them my money anymore. You aren’t doing me a favor by taking my order and bringing it to me, 5 Star. Customer service is part of the equation.

The food is very good here(saag paneer, tandoori chicken, and a lassi), but the place needs a lot of fresh paint and kept much cleaner. you can see right into the event room and you see ladders laying around, and just a general disarray of crap everywhere. I know this place is not the Taj Mahaal, and I’m not expecting it to be immaculate, but there were certain areas of the restaurant where the lighting was a little dim and uninviting. The lighting needs to be better to really see what needs to be done to spruce things up. I think that could start to help this diner get into a better groove.

This is one of my very favorite places to eat in NYC. They tend to be open late, but really the reason that I keep coming back is the delicious food for crazy low prices. We frequently get their malai kofta, their tikki masala and an order of teh mixed pakora –and naan, of course– but a trip to five star is never complete without their absolutely scrumptious samosas. For an even cheaper meal, be sure to have cash on hand. They get a little testy when they have to swipe a credit card.(That being said, the guy who is there at night always acts like it’s a MAJOR inconvenience to serve food.) But their portions are huge and normally last for 2 or even 3 meals!

Me and my fiancé are totally addicted to their chicken tikka masala. We get it to go almost once a week and it’s just so consistently great. We also had dinner there a few times and the waitress is very nice and good at her job. But she seems to be almost always by herself managing the tables and take-out. So service ends up being quite slow. Overall. We’re really glad to live not too far from 5 star diner. It’s definitely our«ethnic treat»

The food is good here. I’ll give them that. BUTTHEYCHARGEHIGHERPRICESFOR«CERTAIN» PEOPLE. Everytime I order food, the price is different. If it’s not that, then rice costs extra. If not that, then it doesn’t come with salad. The woman behind the counter is the worst. She has no shame with charging you more once you arrive to pick up the food. Today I got charged 10 $ per dish, whereas it’s usually 7. That’s a 42% markup! Totally unethical. If this happens to you, I think you should speak up. Or report it to Consumer Affairs…
